100Gw is equivalent to the power used by 72 million Americans or 21.8% of this country.

We’re in for some insano climate change if we use coal, natural gas, and other extremely dirty energy sources to add this much power to the grid every year.

Altman is IMO, the most dangerous person on the planet outside of Trump and his cabal, and perhaps Netanyahu.

And the real wild part is that chatgpt is one of the shittiest llms out there. You can do better with a local model on a consumer video card, I can run ollama on my own busted laptop chip with 2gb vram.

Fucked.

Thats about (3) Three Gorges Dams of new power generation, every year. When was the last time the US completed a project anywhere near the scale of just (1)?

It's simply not happening, no matter how much money they throw at it.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago

It's the perfect excuse for a bunch of rich failsons to party on new yachts and private jets and mysteriously fail to complete the project

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 5 points 6 months ago

We could get close by just buying every portable generator sold in the US for several years.

The American economy is a runaway freight train on a collision course with reality.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 23 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It’s peak capitalism. They managed to siphon all the money out of making something only this time there is no “something” being made. All the labors of the world to make a big box with nothing inside.

its the beginning of the singularity that will eat the entire universe. He already doesnt control it and his chatgpt gf is telling him she needs MOAR POWA

Shout out to the Ollama devs, and llama.cpp devs. Absolute wizards.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago

Yeah I'm gonna play around with doing image gen on this old laptop but I need to update my video drivers tomorrow. Sure it takes like 3-4 to gen a response in an llm with my low vram but at least I know it's not killing the planet.

i mean they're facebook arent they?

[–] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 8 points 6 months ago

I guess not, it was started by Georgi Gerganov to implement facebook's Llama without any dependencies. Ollama is system built on top of llama.cpp to assist with model management and deployment

With the shutdown and this entire AI bubble, I'm anxious for what happens next when the US shits the bed.

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago

Great Scot!

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 14 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You all think this is a bubble. I'm just saying the singularity already happened, and we're just experiencing the outcomes of it.

Doesn't it seem insane how much money they're spending on AI that no one asked for?

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 19 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I've got a conspiracy that most of the data centers aren't used for chat bots and slop images, but like 90% of them are mass surveillance and they've built an even bigger panopticon.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago

They already have the tech to record all our conversations with our smartphones. They just lacked the means to proactively analyze the exabytes of data instead of first flagging people as "persons of interest." AI is their attempt at developing that tech.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

It's the same thing.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 14 points 6 months ago

I like to imagine the actual LLM did this, not the company.

[–] acab_means_cop_Dva@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

That’s a lot of blown up Appalachian mountaintops.

[–] acab_means_cop_Dva@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

But what is a few sacred indigenous peaks between old friends?

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 3 points 6 months ago

no no the only sacred things are the white house east wing and the cheapest possible bread-like thing that had a magic spell cast on it

Altman's other business is a nuclear startup.

Don't worry. These silocone valley kind have their attention span fucked by microdosing acid between two tantric sex cult meeting. He'll probably forget about it in 3 months and focus on living in a pod inside a vulcano or some stupid shit
