Why do we have to wear boring normal clothes? Why can't we all just wear cool embroidered robes?

1 Peter 3:3-4 - Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

Man... I never thought I'd be the victim of cultural appropriation, but this is WILD. I'd be mad if it wasn't so fucking ridiculous and funny looking.

Are you an Uzbek jew? Because I think that there is a Bukharan jewish robe

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think robe itself is a problem, I recognize it as something that might have been religious costume with legitimate history, but to see it on someone so nakedly pandering and ignorant of that context is bonkers lol. It's like they just tried to find the most "Jewish looking" outfit they could find. Like, he's the only dude there dressed like that. It would be like showing up to a meeting with various US Native American tribes in feather head dress, paint, and moccasins, and being like "HOW DO YOU DO INDIANS! I COME HERE WITH GREAT HONOR FOR YOUR CULTURE!"

With the caveat that he would be meeting with Inuits in this example. Because that's the thing, he found the most jewishly jew thing he could find... for central Asian Mizrahi Jews, and then went to a meeting of Sephardic Lebanese people. He'd be showing up in feathered head dress and saying "Hello my fellow Indians" to a bunch of people who have never, will never, and have no interest in wearing feathers, purely because he thinks that the war bonnet looks swaggy. And listen, that's bad. It's cultural appropriative and hugely problematic for a variety of reasons including racism. But you almost have to appreciate the consistency, the man is wearing that outfit because that outfit is the most he could find while looking under outfits labelled "jew" and what he likes is the most.

Exactly the absurdity I was having difficulty conveying in my original comment. Thanks for spelling it the rest of the way out to help us all appreciate it better.

It will be sad when he can no longer claim the title of "America's funniest mayor" since Zohran is going yo steamroll him in this election, but he can always be America's funniest ex-mayor
