Oxygen makes up a full third of dihydrogen monoxide which kills thousands of people a year.

[–] dankm@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's well over a third by mass..

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world 24 points 1 week ago

Doesn't matter, I'm not Christian

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 6 points 1 week ago

Learn more about this dangerous, unregulated chemical: https://dhmo.org/

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Please correct me if I'm wrong because I might be ridiculously wrong, but isn't it that the oxygen is the reason we're wilting with age like plants?

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Partly yea, unbound oxygen is very excitable and is capable of causing DNA dmg! But everything damages your DNA! Light, heat, viral/bacterial infections, time, stress… Everything!

But you can limit the very first one with anti-oxidants, which is strictly not capable of doing anything else but binding unbound oxygen! Ripe bananas contain a bunch of them

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

Unironically, oxidative stress shortens your telomeres and therefore, your lifespan.

100% of people who breathe this die.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago

This is why i smoke.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dihydrogen monoxide is like that too. 100% of the people who drink it die. And it's even deadlier when inhaled, it only takes a relatively small amount.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

Of course, it's got oxygen in it.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

100% of people ~~who breathe this~~ die.

[–] banazir@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I happen to know multiple people who haven't died.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But they will, eventually. Even if only at the heat death of the universe.

[–] Una@europe.pub 3 points 1 week ago

Nah I'll survive mrrrreow meow, I'll simply become THE ENERGY and survive

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 13 points 1 week ago

Rust is so dangerous it has even infected computers and several programmers' brains

We're not the first organisms to alter the atmosphere and cause a mass extinction. The first ones were cyanobacteria and the gas they released was oxygen. They caused

a decrease in the size of the biosphere of >80%

We're descended from the survivors that adapted to a high-oxygen environment but to this day there are many microorganisms that die if exposed to even small amounts of oxygen.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

The great oxidization is what your referring to. It's pretty impressive. It caused like 90% death to all life, and then life adapted and here we are. It rusted the shit out of the planet too.

[–] iii@mander.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

Ooh no no nooo

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I know this is a joke but it also kinda isn't, we are all constantly dying because of oxygen we literally die of old age because our bodies kill themselves so Oxygen doesn't kill us earlier, well that's not entirely true it's also because of cancer but close enough.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is why antioxidants are good, right? /s

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't know why you're adding /s to a literal fact. Yes age is a form of cellular oxidation, yes that's why anti-oxidants are said to prevent/slow aging:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-radical_theory_of_aging

When oxygen was first released during the great oxygenation event, it killed all other life on earth.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There are chemicals that can make it so your blood stops reacting with oxygen but big pharma doesnt want you to take them and sometimes doctors even force people to take drugs to counteract them

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Big Pharma will never be able to stop me from eating blueberries and getting all the anti-oxidants. 😤

If my cells wanna be asphyxiated, they need to do it themselves. Erotically.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 2 points 1 week ago

Wait till you see what it does to software

[–] Una@europe.pub 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Aren't the fact that there are other gases that we breathe in with oxygen reason we live, like how oxygen is highly reactive so breathing pure oxygen in big quantity will cause reactions in our body and kill us, and other gases (nitrogen mostly) act as a, so to speak, barrier against those reactions.

Also, I understand that if there are bigger concentration of oxygen we could adapt and survive, but also like too much oxygen (whatever that amount may be) can also cause to not live and different form of life to exist instead

[–] r00ty@kbin.life 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's worse than that! When we breath in the oxygen goes into our blood. You know what else is in that blood? Iron! It's literally rusting our blood!

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

That's why blood is red, it's all the rust from the oxygen we breathe

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tried to hold my breath but couldn't for long.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You must be really addicted. Some people slowly wean off it with a belt.

[–] unknown@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

What does it mean if you make a creaking noise when you breathe? If you make a creaking noise when you breathe it means you have a rusty lung.

Rusty lung cancer can be easily treated at home with a vape pen and DW40, by filling the tank and taking deep puffs. This will clean your lungs and make you cough up all the rust.

Rusty lung cancer symptoms, red or brown mucus is common with rusty lung cancer, especially following treatment.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 week ago

You only have to worry if you have iron lungs.
