On this day in 1976, the Soweto Uprising began in South Africa after the government mandated that Afrikaans be taught in school, leading to demonstrations by more than 20,000 black schoolchildren, hundreds of whom were killed by police.

The Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974 mandated all black schools to use Afrikaans and English in equal amounts as languages of instruction. Afrikaans was strongly associated with apartheid (prominent anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu called it "the language of the oppressor"), and this decree was widely resented.

At first, resistance to the measure was scattered - on April 30th, the students of Orlando West Junior School went on strike, and other schools began to follow suit. Students eventually formed an Action Committee, later known as the Soweto Students' Representative Council, which organized a mass meeting on June 13th to develop a cohesive strategy of protest.

On the morning on June 16th, 10,000-20,000 students walked out of their schools to a mass rally, carrying signs reading "Down with Afrikaans", "Viva Azania", and "If we must do Afrikaans, Vorster must do Zulu".

The protest turned violent after students killed a trained dog that the police had sicced on them, causing the police to open fire. Among the first students to be murdered were the 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu and the 12-year-old Hector Pieterson (shown, photo by Sam Nzima).

Social reformer Dr. Melville Edelstein was beaten to death by the mob, a sign around his neck proclaiming, "Beware Afrikaans is the most dangerous drug for our future". 23 people died on the first day in Soweto, and hundreds more were killed in the following weeks.

Emergency clinics were swamped with injured and bloody children. Police requested for the hospital to provide a list of all victims with bullet wounds, however the doctors refused, recording bullet wounds as abscesses.

The violence led to widespread riots and sympathy protests throughout South Africa, including white students from the University of the Witwatersrand. In remembrance of these events, June 16th is now a public holiday in South Africa known as Youth Day.

@ratboy@hexbear.net I've been thinking about songs called or about Superman and aside from Goldfinger, its a pretty bleak lineup. Five for Fighting, 3 Doors Down, Our Lady Peace, Crash Test Dummies. My boy deserves better

The Adventures of an Amazon Delivery Driver! Today's Episode: It's Hot

Summer has returned to Cybertruckland. It's been close to 100 out there this week. For unrelated reasons this week I also started weighing myself in the morning every day. An interesting result: I lost 3.5 pounds yesterday wtf

Also my shoes are falling apart and I keep losing shifts to injury and "lol we cut you" so I'm gonna sneak complaining about that in here too

Anyone want to sponsor me to quit my job and play Satisfactory for approximately two years nonstop? I'll give you a cut of my profits when I make it big as a streamer, you could consider it an ethical investment in my mental health.

Ok hexbears how do I stop being extremely anxious about the state of the world?

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

be so miserable that you can't be around people or participate in society, with no hope of assistance or improvement. can't worry about the future if you don't think you have one.

Dunno trying the same thing, feeling very trapped overall

Just trying to wind down by reading and chilling though I find it hard to do any of that when I feel in an anxious plugged in state all the time and it's been frying my brain.

[–] decaptcha@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago

Make yourself too busy and tired to be anxious. An easy thing to say, at least. And in my case it's not from organizing or building communism or anything rad, just working too much at a new job. Not sure I recommend my particular strategy, actually

EGM's take on September 11th from their "Top 10 News Stories of 2001" (found on page 129 (RetroMags p. 139) of Issue #155 from April 2002)

Image transcription

THE TOP 10 NEWS STORIES OF 2001

10) METAL GEAR SOLID 2

After all the hype, was MGS2 worth the wait? You bet'cher stealth camouflage it was. We won't be forgetting this heady sequel anytime soon.

9) ONLINE GAMING

Online gaming on consoles got a kick in the pants in 2K1 with Phantasy Star Online, Outrigger, Sega/Visual Concepts' sports games.... The Dreamcast was just hitting its online stride when the system stalled for good.

8) THE LEGEND OF "CELDA"

Whether you're for, or against, The Legend of Zelda's makeover, you've got to admit that its new Looney Tunes look threw you for a loop. More than a couple fist fights have already broken out here at EGM over this very controversy.

7) GAME BOY ADVANCE

As much as we love the GBC, it was so overdue for a retirement. Enter the GBA, with its hard-to-see screen and library of SNES rehashes, here to save the day. Just kidding. We really do love this lil' bundle of joy.

6) CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY

Second-party developer Rare's drinkin', swearing and money- grubbing sonuvabitch named Conker flushed Nintendo's family-friendliness down the toilet, and was a sales disaster on the dying N64.

5) RESIDENT EVIL MAKES JUMP TO GAMECUBE

One of the shockers of 2001 was Capcom's announcement that the RE series was going GameCube-exclusive. Good news for mature 'Cube owners who want more than just the usual kiddy stuff.

4) SEPTEMBER 11TH

Just as American life changed dramatically after the events of Sept. 11, so, too, did the video games we play. Some games were cancelled, while others underwent last-minute changes before their final release.

3) XBOX AND GAMECUBE SYSTEM LAUNCHES

When the Xbox and GameCube launched three days apart (on Nov. 15 and 18, respectively), our wallets were begging for mercy. Oh sweet mercy.

2) VIDEO GAMES GO TO THE MOVIES

Video games hit the theaters big time with Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. For 2002 and beyond, we'll see flicks like Resident Evil, Crazy Taxi and Duke Nukem.

1) SEGA GOES MULTI-PLATFORM

"The world of games is changing, so Sega must change, too." With that statement, Hideki Sato, Sega's chief operating officer, made it official: Sega was leaving the hardware business to publish software on all systems. After this bombshell, we were distracted to notice that hell had frozen over.

The Israel-Iran war is fascinating to me because the distance involved means all either side can really do is launch long-range missiles at each other and they're doing things like firing probing missiles to test each other's air defenses.

The face of modern warfare was predicted by, of all things, the Super Nintendo game Metal Marines.

My partner has been pouring their heart and soul into their company and work for the past 5 years, and it's been going well enough for them to live comfortably off until now. It's come to the point where AI has completely fucked the entire industry for the forseeable future. Their main client, which I assume is a pretty large company, recently announced that they will go full AI for this particular kind of work, and their subcontractors (i.e. my partner) will from now on work mainly as glorified post-editors for their AI's excrement, of course for a fraction of their previous pay. I'm assuming they're trying to smoke out all the humans from their workforce to pump up the next quarter's results, and I'm fairly confident that it will bite them in the ass within a few years tops. But a few years is still a long ass time to work for peanuts with dubious job security...

Economically it's not even that big of a problem for us, we can manage fine on my salary alone, but the worst part is that my partner is super depressed and exhausted over all of this shit. It's gotta be pretty god damn rough to have to walk away from something you've been working hard at for so long because it's turned into a complete dead end by corporate bullshit. But the fact of the matter is that the pay is just too fucking ass. Yeah yeah follow your passion and all that, but this shit is simply unsustainable. They're working longer hours than I do for like a third of my monthly salary at this point. "Just getting another job" isn't exactly a realistic option either given the current job market. I guess the best idea is to wait out the AI bubble and get back into it once the piggies realise that humans are kinda alright for this kind of creative work after all. What a bullshit situation, fuck AI and every dumbass idiot C-whatever-O that buys into the hype.

Amazing that the empire being blatantly evil in original trilogy forced Disney writers to acknowledge in universe that the "extremist Saw Gerrera" is fundementally correct, the other rebels main objection with them is that the "extremists" are too imprecise.

Summer’s going to be over before I know it and I’ll be back to being unemployed and being accused of laziness because porky is a picky guy, and why the fuck would he hire a loser like me when he has thousands of experienced professionals to choose from?

I’m not lazy, I’m just incompetent. Not my fault everyone is just better than me, I try but someone beats me every time…and even if I was the only one, porky would just not hire me because why would he hire a loser like me?

The people i find the most strange are the ones who say β€œoh this supplement has completely changed my life im now a completely different person!”, like how does taking a magnesium supplement do anything to that level. Ive even seen the same with b12, like unless you’re vegan you arent deficient in b12 its in everything carnists eat. Turmeric, aloe vera, fish oil, I might as well just pray to allah instead of taking those.
