Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

Dude. Russia is no longer a socialist country. Half a century of Marxist analysis doesn't apply to modern day Russia. It is an autocratic oligarchy now

From the great minds of Lemmy

Your honor, it seems like a mistake to use the law to criticize what my client was doing. The law describes lawful behavior, but my client was engaging in criminal behavior.

This bag of spiced nuts I bought has a small graphic that I can only interpret as "try putting a whole handful of these in your mouth at once, you hog", and just for your information, bag, I was going to do that anyway and didn't need your advice

The Anglo Saxon word for fine/levy/tax became the Danish/Norwegian word for "Debt" because of who was on what end of the viking protection racket. This random information brought to you by Long Transportation Times.

Long Transportation Times is a subsidiary of privatised public services.

The great thing about forgetting much of your high school education is you can relearn using Soviet textbooks this time.

What a fitting day this was to open a discussion in my studies about pursuing a post-grad position by re-centering Marx and class to my field of study. I got a green light too, they thought that it was a great idea and that my analysis of class being marginalized is correct.

Ask me in 6 years if I still think this was a good idea.

One day i will understand why it's more economically advantageous to have the entire department use 50% of their time filling out forms rather than hire 2 people to do all the work more effectively and also well (Because they have expertise in secretarial stuff)

Every time it's explained by some administrator they seem to gloss over over the part where doctors spend most of their time doing non-doctor things and go directly to the savings from not hiring two medical secretaries

I heard Vijay Prashad talking about leftists have to be more likable and do less of the infighting shit because it's unappealing to outsiders and I'm just not sure I agree that's the problem. It's usually the easiest thing to point to as if we just were more approachable more people would want to join a communist organization.

I think it comes down to power and material impact. Arguing and disagreeing over small shit is done by all parties and yet they still have power because they hold onto it and wield it with ease.

One thing he did say that struck a nerve is he was talking about China being a serious country. The imperial core is not serious, but that doesn't mean our effort to organize and build solidarity within the working class shouldn't be taken seriously. The Black Panthers are great example of this. They were serious about what they were doing and that is why when they built power and people trusted them.

This is also more of a self reflection in what I could work on as I'm organizing.

I've seen a lot of comments over the years about how the scene where Anakin is talking politics with padme in the pretty naboo field to be his showing to support fascism. He supports a dictatorship but is clearly too himbo to have any further elaboration. Even a dictatorship is going a bit far, he just says someone one wise should be around to make senators agree on stuff. That's basically just a guy with executive power who can overrule deadlocks based strictly on what he said. That's not particularly abnormal

Why are pepper plants like the fainting goat of the plant world?

Like, not enough water, or too much water, or looking at it wrong, and it's just like AIGHT, BET, I'M OUT and it drops all its leaves off

Like they just kill themselves, like, the leaves just autolyze at the base and fall

I am assuming it's an adaptation to reduce water loss but like, my plant in christ, you need those fucking leaves!

If the USSR were in the mix today then shit would be so different. They'd have invented a space vacation destination. FOSS would make silicone valley impossible. China would have a buddy. America couldn't bully people. The world would be a little bit happier

Visited the palace for an invitation thing and got within like 15m of the king in his back garden yesterday.

The buffet was shit. I've had better sandwiches. The desserts and sweets were good though.

Question for the people that are actually not afraid of talking to others. How should I ask people if they want to hang out? I haven't seen some friends in almost 7 months and I want to see them again. Should I just ask them if they want to get lunch or dinner somewhere? Thats what I think I might do tomorrow if I don't get so scared of talking

Wow my Database Management instructor really didn't feel like showing up to work this week.

Our "lecture" is a youtube video essay on ~~AI~~ LLMs, and our "assignment" is to have a conversation about Database Management with ChatGPT. The assignment itself was written by ChatGPT.

There's an extra credit which seems more interesting about ~~AI~~ LLM agents in database systems. Frankly I would have made that the main assignment for the week idk what I'm supposed to get out of this "have a conversation" bullshit.

Most of the assignments for this class so far have just been googling how to do things in PostgreSQL/MongoDB for an hour or so which has been easy as balls but at least that was hands on practice doing database stuff. This is just taking the piss.
