Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fell victim to a thief while eating dinner at a downtown Washington, DC, restaurant Sunday night, two sources familiar with the incident, including a law enforcement source, told CNN.

The Secret Service, which provides security for Noem, reviewed security camera footage at the restaurant and saw an unknown white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant.

The thief got away with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash, the law enforcement source said.

Also, according to our own laws, she was doing something unlawful because why would she need $3,000 in cash?! They'd civil forfeiture that shit if a normal person got caught with that much cash on them.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 56 points 10 months ago

Sounds like it was taken via citizen’s civil forfeiture 😊

[–] shertson@lemmy.world 29 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Yeah, when I served on a jury, the prosecutor was very clear that the only reason someone carried more than $100 in cash was for drugs or other illicit dealings.

Hope you voted to acquit.

Edit: ducking autocorrect.

She runs the Department of Homeland Security, not Restaurantland Security.

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 101 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I thought using cash like that was a sign of criminality?Or does that only apply to minorities? You better believe any cop out there would confiscate that shit from any of us faster than you can say civil asset forfeiture. It was certainly a point of contention for Fanni Willis during the Trump trial.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I carry cash often because I play poker on the weekends as a hobby. It's funny how stigmatized paying cash for anything over $100 has become. People are always surprised to see it, and you definitely catch some judgemental looks.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Really? I don't do it a ton because I don't really like carrying cash, but I can't think of a time when someone's looked at me weird, my dealer practically insists on it and the local tradesmen all seem to like it so much they give me a discount.

[–] Baguette@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I carry cash in small amounts because some restaurants prefer cash to avoid the credit card fee

Looks like drop off of state secrets to russian agent made to look like a theft. What better way than in plain sight and blame it on a thief.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 10 months ago (6 children)

ffs dead drops aren't done in ways that end up in the news. this recent fascination with conspiracy theories is starting to make liberals look as insane as MAGA nitwits.

[–] AcidicBasicGlitch@lemm.ee 10 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Idk if you've noticed but this administration is dumb as fuck and already thinks they're above the law. Why wouldn't they

We don't take these seriously. Lol

You can still safely assume that the average Lemming is a well educated lefty, frustrated at what's going on, and willing to chuck a funny pebble at the administration to relieve some steam.

Or what, do you think people actually believe JD Vance fucks couches? But he totally could, right? ;)

Why was she carrying around $3k? Nothing illegal about that but that is a little curious.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 29 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 22 points 10 months ago (2 children)

She claims she took out that money to celebrate Easter with family... for dinner, activities, and gifts.

I use a credit card for such things, but yeah.

[–] AcidicBasicGlitch@lemm.ee 13 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I guess in her defense, if you're involved in the destruction of the U.S. economy, you never know when the economy might collapse and credit cards will no longer be accepted.

Still, you would think she would just carry around bars of solid gold or something.

[–] hansolo@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

She should be paying in Euro then. Never know when the USD is going to collapse.

It's illegal if the cop who finds it on you says it's illegal.

[–] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Maybe just because Trump's inner circle is making enough money right now that that's just walking around money to her.

[–] AcidicBasicGlitch@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Even so, rich people usually don't carry wads of cash like that unless they are paying somebody under the table.

Doesn't prove it was for something illegal, but let's not pretend it doesn't look weird AF

[–] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Yeah, definitely. Could be something illegal. Could just be something she doesn't want showing up on shared credit card receipts.

She has a Secret Service detail, and still managed to get robbed? I hope she feels real safe going out in public knowing that they can't even protect her purse.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 4 points 10 months ago

Cojones on that thief though...

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 12 points 10 months ago

I've got $5 that says she just misplaced it.

[–] Wazowski@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

Good. Just a shame she didn’t choke to death, slowly.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

From what I've heard about the secret service they were probably at the bar getting plastered. The thief probably had no idea who she was. Or....

This was an arranged dead drop to pass Intel off to Russia. This way the narrative is she was robbed, not just giving a package to some rando. No evidence to back that up, just wild internet speculation for your Tuesday morning.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

I hope they donate it to an animal shelter
