The first time I went to Japan was during this period and a lot of the bars were specifically hiring black men to stand outside and get people to come in.

American music gets around a lot so generally music genres that are popular in the US will spread all over to some degree. I think country is kind of the exception there.

That really depends on the gin.

I mean the solution if you don't want to see a common topic on /c/all or whatever we call it on Lemmy is to subscribe to specific communities and just read those. But I don't think Lemmy is really big enough for that yet. I think if you did that you would very quickly notice that you're just seeing the same threads popping up on your feed (individual threads seem to stay active for much longer on Lemmy than on Reddit, owing to less overall content). So I just don't see any obvious path to provide what you're asking. A list of "default communities" like reddit used to have? There's reasons why reddit killed that off, mainly because no one could agree on which communities should or shouldn't be on the list. Individually curated "starter packs" like Bluesky is doing? I dunno you probably could do something like that with the import settings functionality.* I mean the solution if you don't want to see a common topic on /c/all or whatever we call it on Lemmy is to subscribe to specific communities and just read those. It would give a bit more flavor to which instance you choose. I don't know if current Lemmy codebase would support this, though.

Most of the Northeast really.

I realize that a lot of people have a strong dislike of politics, but you wouldn't see so much political discussion if there wasn't an equally large number of people who engage in it. I think most people on Lemmy are probably reading the all feed rather than just local anyway, so one instance not allowing political communities wouldn't really do much. Politics aren't really limited to specific instances so defederating wouldn't really help.

Learn to use your blocklists instead. Block communities, instances, and individuals that you don't want to see. For whatever reason I find myself blocking far more individuals on Lemmy than I ever did on Reddit, perhaps because there are a higher percentage of people with extremist views on various topics here.

The value of social media is 100% in who's on it. Vast majority of people neither know nor care what the fediverse is. They just know a lot of people who don't suck are moving to bluesky.

Sure snowflake, 90mph wind gusts after months of drought conditions is the government's fault. It's not like the entire western US and Canada have seen increasing red flag conditions for years which are only getting worse.

Hamburgers, most likely. I freeze them and thaw as needed.

The Bread Baker's Apprentice - This is variation 2 of his white bread recipe. I'll note that I have the original edition, not the anniversary one, so there may be differences.

The egg listed is for the dough, so you'll want an additional egg for the egg wash. Let me know if you have any other questions - the original recipe in the book is quite a bit more detailed, but I just jotted down shorthand for my recipe app.

Here's a recipe for anyone who wants it. From Peter Reinhart's The Bread Baker's Apprentice. Amounts are a little odd because I converted it to metric.

Ingredients

    584 g Bread Flour
    11 g Salt
    43 g Sugar
6 g Instant Yeast (original amount)
    1 Egg, Slightly Beaten
    1/2 stick Butter, Melted
    340 g Milk
  1. Mix all ingredients and knead 6-8 minutes.
  2. Ferment at room temperature 1.5 - 2 hours, until dough doubles in size.
  3. Divide dough, cover, and allow to rest 20 minutes. (Edit: I do a rough preshape here)
  4. Shape into final form and allow to rise 60 to 90 minutes. (Edit: for this step I shape into mini boules and press them a little flatter.)
  5. For buns, bake at 400 15 minutes.
  6. For loaves, bake at 350 for 35 to 45 minutes.

Makes 10 medium buns.

Will also note that there's an egg wash on these.
