Man, this guy is literally too busy being convicted of numerous felony crimes and sued for fraud, that he can't attend the primaries, but he's still the leading candidate...

I don't give a rats ass about republicans, but it's like watching a woman make excuses for her abusive partner, and then going back to him. I realize there's a lot that goes on in the abusive scenario, and I, in no way, mean to trivialize domestic abuse, but it's the best analogy I could think of.

The whole thing is complete insanity.

In their statement, senior campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita say the November debate in Miami and all future debates should be canceled. “Anything less, along with other reasons not to cancel, are an admission to the grassroots that their concerns about voter integrity are not taken seriously and national Republicans are more concerned about helping Joe Biden than ensuring a safe and secure election” they said.

Complete brain washing.

[-] Audrey0nne@leminal.space 17 points 1 year ago

Not just women but anyone who has suffered any sort of abuse can act very similarly and for the same reasons. On such a large scale it would seem to implicate that would be the case. I offer a different opinion.

Hierarchy.

People like the things they see themselves in others. If, as we are starting to learn about this group of supporters is that it’s all projection. This person is literally telegraphing who they are and what they feel about things, these supporters are eating it up because that’s who they are as well. What could be ascribed to the reaction of the abused I would counter it is because that’s who these supporters simply are are.

These people will line up behind a meat grinder so long as they get a turn at the crank and everyone else be fed in.

Agreed, complete insanity. The republicans voting for him are literally brain washed and cannot see the forest through the TREE. It is fascinating though I must admit. A cult on this scale was unimaginable. At least with religious cults there is some good that comes from them. With this cult it is all very, very bad.

[-] Riccosuave@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Please explain to me what good you think comes from "religious cults" because I'm dying to hear it...

[-] ViewSonik@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I see all religious groups as cults. Does that help? Or do you want to argue about your definition of cult?

[-] Riccosuave@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Generally I agree with you. However, I'm still not convinced that there is anything approaching a net positive outcome from religion either currently or historically, and I would in fact argue it is that exact kind of priming that led to the rise of the neo-fascist movement in the first place.

[-] ViewSonik@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I did not say “net” good. I said “some good”. You still disagree with that?

[-] Riccosuave@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Based on this statement:

At least with religious cults there is some good that comes from them. With this cult it is all very, very bad.

It would seem that you are suggesting that there is some type of positive impact on society from religion or magical thinking that causes you to hold it in higher regard, or consider it to be at least less dangerous than the post-modern conservative ideoligical movement.

I understand what you are saying, I just disagree with that premise...partly because of the fact that the two are fundamentally interwoven ideologically but also because it is clear that the destructive cult dynamics of religion are what psychologically primed these followers of the post-modern conservative movement in the first place.

[-] ViewSonik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Sigh, you’re one of those people who loves to argue about nothing. Im blocking you because you’re making up something incredibly silly based on your lack of reading comprehension skills. So read this: cya bud.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

It's more that religious cults don't really have much positive going for them beyond some superficial "I feel so much better with them"

[-] athos77@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

“Anything less, along with other reasons not to cancel, are an admission to the grassroots that their concerns about voter integrity are not taken seriously and national Republicans are more concerned about helping Joe Biden than ensuring a safe and secure election”

Translation: the debates are giving some airtime to our opponents and we really don't like that. But since we're too cowardly to show up in person, let's just cancel the whole thing, yeah?

[-] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

He's like openly gaslighting the RNC to go all in on his completely unmasked sedition. Like, holy shit. I mean, completely predictable, but there's gotta be a bottom here, right? Republicans are not actually going to start a civil war over Donald Trump's ego, are they?

Because Donald Trump is definitely going to declare himself president in exile if he loses this election. You guys gonna go along with that?

[-] torknorggren@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Partly brainwashing. Mostly willful self delusion--so like you say, akin to abuse. They want to believe Trump can fulfill their fantasy, and ignore all the ample evidence to the contrary.

[-] squiblet@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The party as a whole treats Democrats like the other member in an abusive relationship.

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

crimes and sued for fraud, that he can’t attend the primaries,

No, he wasn’t going to attend them regardless because he has nothing to gain

[-] MimicJar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Technically he wasn't invited because didn't sign the loyalty pledge. https://www.axios.com/2023/08/10/trump-republican-loyalty-pledge-rnc-debate

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 71 points 1 year ago

He didn't sign the pledge to support another candidate if he loses the primaries, like all the others did. The GOP let him get away with it.

He didn't join the debates, and, even worse, he managed to put press attention elsewhere during and after the debates to ruin their press coverage. The GOP did nothing.

In the event that he loses the primaries, he will probably announce himself winner - and the GOP won't do anything against it, either.

[-] TipRing@lemmy.world 35 points 1 year ago

I suspect his campaign will make every effort to avoid unscripted live forums throughout the election. It seems his mental state is deteriorating. I bet he will avoid debates during the general as well.

[-] Szymon@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 year ago

Id love to see a Weekend At Bernie's situation where the putrid festering corpse of Trump is rolled around to events, wins the presidency, and nobody seems to notice since he smells a little better and has lost some weight now.

[-] Neato@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

I mean that was the last several months or years of Feinstein. At that point he's just a figurehead. And we saw from his last presidency the kind of casual evil he surrounded himself with. I'd rather Trump try to make things happen he wants because he's so incredibly ignorant of how the government works his staffers will just run in circles trying to get impossible tasks done and bouncing around every time he changes his mind.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Don’t worry, next time they’ve committed to ensuring the evil he’s surrounded by will be professional. They’ll just keep him bribed with jelly beans and meth

[-] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

His mental state isn’t deteriorating. He is still his own version of cunning and savvy, and he is still dangerous.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml -4 points 1 year ago

It's such bullshit, I want to see Trump and Biden try to debate each other. It'd be hilarious!

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 1 year ago

I maintain a Sanders and Trump debate would be fantastic.

[-] Audrey0nne@leminal.space 35 points 1 year ago

Like refusing to do a beauty pageant for petty reasons then trying to close it down because there’s no attention in your self-aggrandized martyrdom.

[-] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

Is that along with walking in on children changing thier clothes and sticking around for awhile to watch?

[-] Conyak@lemmy.tf 23 points 1 year ago

You have to be a real fucking idiot to admire this dipshit. He is a walking joke and it should be obvious to any normal person.

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

The only people I know that support him are the dumbest kids from high school who never left their hometown.

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

GOP: We want to be in power but that’s it. We don’t actually care about the work part of governing.

[-] morphballganon@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

He knows the NY business lawsuit will be mentioned in subsequent debates, which will make him look bad.

What a sore loser.

[-] 8BitRoadTrip@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

*What a loser. *

FTFY.

[-] Neato@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

A debater could spent the entirety of their several minute block just listing Trumps indictments from this year.

[-] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

The next debate they should put up a cardboard cutout of Trump.

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Nah cause then the news cycle will go on and on about how presidential he acted 😑

[-] Audrey0nne@leminal.space 5 points 1 year ago

Add googly eyes to complete the farce and drive home how much of a circus it all really is

[-] Letstakealook@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

And have an unhinged AI trump voice shout out his recent posts.

[-] Neato@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Empty chair that other Republicans can "debate". Like they did for Obama years ago.

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

"No need to have debates, no need to have an election."

Dumbass republicans.

[-] No_Ones_Slick_Like_Gaston@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, sure, make sense that people who did not vote for him the last election cycle will gather around AFTER 91 INDICTMENTS and multiple convictions and pick him this time.

You see the issue is a percentage of a minority is another minority and that does not even get close to either the sample or registered number of electors in electoral colleges.

The main card at play is voter suppression and scare tactics in Republican controlled areas to favor their own candidate whomever gets the nomination at the end.

[-] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 4 points 1 year ago

This guy was the only GOP candidate whose poll numbers increased after the last "debate"

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 3 points 1 year ago

One way of looking at that is holy shit, does every other candidate suck major rancid corpse farts. Or you know that you are in a cult.

[-] ViewSonik@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I call for you to go to prison. The longer you stay out of prison the more crimes you commit Oompa Loompa

[-] someguy3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I'm guessing he can't conceive of them not lining up and licking his boots. As in "nice show debate, why aren't you falling in line yet? This confuses me. Are you d-d-democrats?"
