I'm currently reading Ruin Road by Lamar Giles which uses this trope.
Is there a good short story or anything with this theme? I love that idea but don’t know if I’d want to read a whole book about it lmao
Well, I know this is a somewhat hot take, but the 2013 Evil Dead reimagining is really good. Suuuuper violent, but all done with practical effects. Really cool. And they did this whole “evil item” thing really well. I think it’s done better than any other movie I’ve seen with the trope. The whole time, one of the characters is being just beaten to shit but they’re clinging to life with everything they have because they’re so scared of what awaits them in hell.
That movie stuck with me for a few reasons, but the effect they managed to get with the whole sense of doom for these characters was so well done. Accomplished with a few choice lines and scenes that are just brutal and, well, evil.

Needful Things kinda hits this. It’s a novel, but it’s Stephen King so it goes quick.
No matter where I leave the doll it always ends up back in my room at night. I even accidentally dropped them into a fire, and not even a single hair was singed! Amazing build quality, friend for life! 5 stars.

My partner would have been haggling that vendor down to a £1.
Plus the vendor knows that at the end of the horror movie the doll will be back in the store ready to be sold to the next haggling victim.

This is the perfect doll to leave in a guest bedroom. It makes your guests feel at home when they come and visit you.
Sat in it's own tiny armchair, fixed to the floor, against the wall facing the bed but so low to the ground you can't see it when actually lying in the bed.
