Nothing's gonna happen. Puerto Ricans weren't voting Trump in large numbers before, and libs making a huge stink about what a racist meanie Trump is just bolsters his numbers. I don't think he has it in the bag, and this might cost him PA, but it might just even out across other swing states.

[-] sweatersocialist@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

i don't think pointing out that trump is a racist bolsters his numbers. all the racists are already voting for trump. it's not as if there's some racist undecided voter thinking "hmmm, you know, i was gonna possibly vote kamala, but when that blue haired lib called trump "velveeta voldemort" it really convinced me that he was my guy, as a fellow racist"

the only way i could think any racists are considering voting for kamala is if they think "hey wait, she's a cop. who better to make the lives of minorities worse?" but no racist is capable of that complex of a thought

You have no proof of this, there’s a lot of puerto rican conservatives

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago

Yeah, there are, they still mostly vote Dem because the Democratic Party is a conservative party that promises them statehood. The only diaspora Puerto Ricans who were voting Trump before this are pain pigs that are still gonna vote for him regardless. As I said, the only swing state where there's enough diaspora Puerto Ricans who are gonna be swayed in enough numbers to matter is PA. Trump getting this much media attention for free, and people seeing the libs cry? That's definitely gonna motivate way more hogs to vote Trump to own the libs. It's 2016 all over again.

Brother, it’s 2024, Jennifer Gonzalez is GOP and at least half of PNP is decidedly Repos now. There’s a significant population of Puerto Ricans in Michigan, Georgia, NC, Texas. The last election was decided in the 5 digits, I’m not saying any of this will matter or not, but it’s impossible to make a confident opinion if things are going to be as close as they have in the previous two cycles

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

The really funny thing that’s going to happen is that in a few days PR will seat its first pro Independence governor in its history.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

Honestly we should get the best Lathe of Heaven users on Hexbear to think of the funniest way the timeline goes from here. Dalmau wins, Trump wins, Dalmau pisses Trump off somehow, Trump sells Puerto Rico to China, then China puts missiles in Puerto Rico and we have a repeat of the Cuban missile crisis?

[-] FactuallyUnscrupulou@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago

Could you please stand a little closer to the lathe for a little while longer? I want the coolest possible outcome.

posadas and then PR nukes Washington

I'll break into the base and press the button myself if that's what it takes.

I wonder if ol' Hans Kristian Graebener of Spring, Texas feels a little betrayed at the moment.

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 21 points 6 days ago

It's going to come down to how many of them are reactionary themselves and see undocumented immigrants as lesser than them.

[-] Chapo_is_Red@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago

Puerto Ricans are all US citizens, they can't be "illegals" so I don't think that logic applies in this case. If the comedian had similarly insulted Dominican Republic or Mexico or Venezuela, then what you describe would be the calculus.

In this case, I think all that matters is (1) how much PR republicans identify the comments with Trump versus with the "comedian" who said them, and (2) how much PR republicans can just do the cognitive dissonance thing Trump's evangelical supporters do (many of whom are Puerto Rican).

Puerto Ricans mostly live in urban constituencies so their vote was going to the Democrats no matter what

[-] HarryLime@hexbear.net 28 points 6 days ago

It doesn't really work like that. Electoral college votes are apportioned statewide, so every vote in a swing state counts.

[-] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 26 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

The stateside Puerto Rican community is increasingly suburbanized and also has greatly dispersed. Puerto Ricans are today less numerous in their traditional enclaves in NYC and elsewhere as they have spread to the suburbs. Texas and Ohio have seen huge increases in their Puerto Rican populations in the last decade.

Florida is also notable in that it has had a huge Puerto Rican community for years, centered on central Florida where they buck the stereotypical “urban” trend. This community has always been large and has continued to grow rapidly while other traditional Puerto Rican communities (NYC) have shrunk.

But also this ignores the history of Puerto Rican migration to the mainland. Yes the urban concentrations are probably more well-known, but there’s also a long history of Puerto Ricans migrating to rural communities as farmhands (esp in the 60s and 70s after the Bracero Program ended)

[-] eldavi@lemmy.ml 8 points 6 days ago

thanks for educating me

[-] CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

Yeah I grew up in suburban central florida and most of my friends were puerto rican

When did Mike Stoklasa become a Disco Elysium character

[-] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 18 points 6 days ago

I knew a few Puerto Rican Trumpers. Not sure how well he can rely on those votes now, mind you.

Had to look that one up, a little piece of Americana I missed because... Well, I hate baseball lol. Here's hoping he gets the treatment strictly for our entertainment.

[-] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I guess it would also depend on whether they equate the comedian with Trump directly or if they hate him but like Trump regardless.

[-] sawne128@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

I thought they couldn't vote for president in Puerto Rico.

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 15 points 6 days ago

no but you can move to the mainland and vote, unless you moved to DC lol

[-] edge@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

unless you moved to DC lol

DC votes for president. It's given 3 electors by the 23rd amendment despite not being a state. Although it has only ever voted Democrat and by an extremely large margin (92-5 in 2020) so your vote there is even more pointless than in California.

[-] Chapo_is_Red@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

In PA there are hundreds of thousands of Puerto Rican voters
