US fast food companies coming up with the most ridiculous shit so they can market it as exotic occidental delicacies to Chinese people.

Probably not what's happening, but it's funny to imagine that's the case.

KFC in China is owned by a Chinese restaurant company, so this might be completely their idea. A few months ago they gave away free whole watermelons (yes, really) if you ordered chicken, to help out farmers because of an oversupply. You can probably imagine how Westerners reacted to that.
