“Man, I wish it wasn’t so hard to get up in the morning.”

“Try going to bed earlier.”

“NO!!!”

[–] ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world 64 points 6 days ago (2 children)

You can get in bed earlier it doesn’t mean you’ll fall asleep

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Stick to a consistent sleep schedule and regulate caffeine intake to less than 400mg

But also there are people that may need medication or just simply people that can't do anything

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 6 days ago (4 children)

How would you even begin to know your caffeine intake

[–] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Basic math? Are you unaware of how much coffee/tea/soda you consume in a given period or did you forget the /s?

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I'm aware of the amount of coffee, but unaware of the caffeine content in that coffee

Coffee averages about 12mg per ounce. A quick estimate is better than nothing, so you can assume you should keep it below 36 oz per day, or 4 mugs, size dependant.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Filter coffee is around 150mg caffeine per cup.

Espresso 80mg per shot.

Thst should get you through the math of caffeine intake.

[–] Sadbutdru@sopuli.xyz 6 points 6 days ago

There's a huge variance around this though. Size of cup, amount of ground coffee used, variety of coffee (robusta has much higher caffeine than arabica), how roasted it is... It might be around 150 mg per cup, but could easily be nearly half or nearly double that.

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 days ago

In my experience, judging from the subjective felt effect when drinking it, the amount of caffeine in filter coffee can vary by a factor 3x depending on brewing technique. I just came back from the U.K. and the hotel breakfast coffee there did less for me in three cups than a single cup from my Fellow Aiden coffee brewer at home. I used to cold brew coffee but had to stop because the apparently higher caffeine content gave me heart problems.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No, how the heck i am gonna guess how much caffeine is in my moka or espresso coffee? It depends how much grounded coffee i used, the quantity of water etc etc there is no fucking way i am goin to calc all that

[–] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

One espresso shot is roughly 60 mg per ounce. The mocha has a measurable amount of coffee in it. Theresa no reason for the number to be exact. You're not doing science, you keeping a rough tally. If you get 430mg instead of 370, it's not going to make that much of a difference. Just get a good approximation to make sure you're not getting like 700.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Not every moka is the same size and you can also put different quantities of coffee and water to change the flavor, which is what I do and idk about ya, i am not gonna measure it, too much of an hassle otherwise, especially if i am sleepy and i must go to work

[–] ChexMax@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I mean all (or maybe most) pregnant women calculate it. It sucks and usually means you just have to leave a huge margin of error

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Caffeine pills. Alternatively, basically the same way you do alcohol

[–] sqw@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

i feel theres also a pretty large variance in the population of caffeine sensitivity.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I've never noticed the effects of caffeine. I don't say it doesn't affect me, but I've never felt it.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

A cup of drip coffee is 150-200 on average. Multiply based on a pessimistic interpretation, then reduce.

You could also measure UV light absorbtion in the 260-280 nm band and compare to a calibration chart. That seems a lot more excessive than just estimating and working to reduce, as opposed to targeting a specific number.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Blackout curtains may also be necessary depending on when you need to be up

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Making a habit will make it easier though

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 21 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Whole life I had a very hard time waking up. Early just wasn't for me.

Then I woke up to the house burning down around me, trapped in a basement.

Now I wake up between 5:30 and 6:00 am every morning without an alarm clock, in fight or flight mode, so I don't even need coffee.

Not a solution that's right for everyone.

[–] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Umm. Sorry man. There are some good meds that can help with that, like Prazosin, which blocks norepinephrine, which is the fight-or-flight chemical. It also blocks nightmares from being remembered if taken at bedtime. And it keeps your blood pressure like, textbook perfect. If you have a doc you can ask. Good luck. I have PTSD which used to cause the same thing you have.

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Growing up in a time where seeking mental health was heavily stigmatized, I haven't sought any professional help for this. "Man up" and "Tough it out" was the rule for anything short of broken bones.

You are not the first to suggest getting help, but are the first who's had similar experience.

I think it's time I "Man up" and admit I need help, thank you

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Good on you for admitting you need help. For what it's worth DBT has been helping my wife stop waking up in terror in the middle of the night as much if you're interested in non chemical solutions (neither course is bad)

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago

That escalated quickly.

Sweet jebus, I'm sorry to hear that. You're absolutely right though: "have you tried PTSD?" may not be right for everyone.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I find that having a cat that religiously wakes you up somewhere between 6 and 7 every morning to be an incredibly effective bedtime retrainer. There's only so many months you can be sleep deprived before going insane or collapsing.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 9 points 6 days ago

That's my cat now.

But my prior cat would sleep on my chest, forcing me to be even more late.

[–] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 4 points 6 days ago

He's starting as early as 4 or 5 these days, Kitty please let me at least sleep until the alarm 🫠

[–] rapchee@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

or you could get a job that starts midday

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)
[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Idunno, where I work they basically just pay you to show up if you're on second shift

[–] rapchee@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

wherever i went, bus/trolley drivers were needed and it pays pretty well too
