It's a consequence of weed being illegal. If you need fewer grams to get high (because it has higher THC content) you can sell less weed for the same money which makes smuggling it much more cost effective.
I'd argue it's actually the other way around, as someone who partakes in a legal us state.
The "old weed" stories told to me by old timers was often whatever trash you could get ahold of. You didn't get a choice, whatever wet, stemmy-ass baggies your local dealer was passing is what you got. Sometimes you got zonked, sometimes it was mild and pretty "meh".
Nowadays all the legal states have tightly controlled commercial growers making flower from carefully propagated genetic lines, optimized and controlled indoor environments, taking lab tests of every batch. Since what legal dispensaries list on the wall is the THC%, thats basically the marketing number that they try to maximize. These commercial growers make so goddamn much they end up dumping product everywhere, and even though "it's illegal" this industrially strong weed gets exported to every other nationwide black market.
Couple that with all the different forms of distillates you can buy right off the shelf, there is more raw THC available to the modern stoner than there was to anyone else in history.
OP's commenter probably took a solid hit expected an old weed joint puff, but got their lungs jackhammered by 40 years of pure industrial optimization.
Yeah, the Mexican dirt weed I used to get as a teenager, you could smoke half a joint by yourself and be buzzed.
I quit when I was 18, but then I moved to a legal state and I took one puff and was legitimately stoned for the rest of the day. Like, could barely control myself.
The modern stuff is super strong.
Okay, seriously. Does this actually happen?
I hit a 84% thc vape from Michigan today, and after about 5 minutes felt nothing. 3 8 second drags until the vape auto-shutoff each time, and I feel it for about 30-45 minutes.
If I want to be stoned literally all day, I have to be hitting the vape at least every 30-90 minutes depending on how hard I hit it.
I usually don't even feel edibles until I've had 30-50mg.
I'm genuinely curious how much it takes for other people to get high, and how they experience it. I feel like I'm missing out.
Hi, im an insufferable cannabis and science nerd, chiming in:
Your reaction to edibles is based on the amount of cytochrome p450 enzyme that you have in your liver. When you combust cannabis, the thc is converted to delta9thc which is what gets you high. It's why you cook weed before you eat it. When you eat weed and process it through your liver, it then converts to hydroxy11thc, by means of enzymes, and you digest it, which is why it takes longer to feel high from edibles and why it feels different from smoking.
Everyone has different levels of enzyme. Some people will not get high from edibles. Some people will get high from 5mg. I eat about 300mg before I can feel anything other than sleepy. I drank a 1000mg "canna-lean" syrup once, that's the highest I've ever been, it was fun, but I didn't lose my faculties.
I'm not saying tolerance doesn't play a part, but there are other factors. Also if you're primarily vaping, THATS what you should take a break from. Our cannabinoid receptors did not evolve alongside such highly concentrated thc products, they aren't used to getting slammed with 85%+ thc, it's used to like 10-12% found naturally in landrace strains. You're system is burned out. The biggest scam in the legal industry is the way they market "30% thc!" as a good thing. The big number sells more weed, so that's all the businesses care about, but cannabinoids and terpenes and INDIVIDUAL BODY CHEMISTRY have way more to do with how you're gonna feel that high. I prefer a 13-17% thc content that is balanced with thcv, cbg, etc, but the market doesn't care about providing you a good product, they just want your money.
Anyway, that was a whole lot of unsolicited information, here's a source about the enzyme ⬇️ have a great day, stay lifted ♡

I think you’ve got a mighty tolerance and it’s probably time for a break if 30-50mg barely hits you. I’m pretty experienced with weed and drugs in general, and 50mg will have me absolutely ripped and mostly non-verbal for hours. 30mg is a sweet spot for stoned and in public.
Holy shit. 10-20 mg orally from some good Sativa makes me question reality and sends me on a trip. I hate to say it, but.. smoke less pls
Oh, this is after a break, of about a month and a half.
I'm actually extremely similar! Kinda. If I take a tbreak for a good few months and then hit something... yeah I'm gonna be uncontrollably high for an hour or so, maybe a little longer. The moment that I have any kind of tolerance though, highs will only last for 30 - 45 mins.
Only sticking to bud will help, and then switching to pens will quickly slyrocket that tolerance (though I can still stay decently high for awhile)
But then edibles? Don't work at all. Apparently you can be missing the enzyme entirely and I'm sure that's what my issue is. That or even after eating a whole bakers dozen of weed cookies just really wasn't enough. Friends have tried giving me every kind of edible under the sun though an none do more than maybe a slight warm head buzz.
Are you a ginger? Is this like the anesthetic thing?
Holy crap. Hi SARGE.
30mg edible can get me close to non-verbal some days and just not really hit that hard others.
I have GAD so I think that messes with my perception.
Be a lightweight to start with and then don't smoke for a decade. Shit hits harder than the first coffee after a 6 week caffeine break.
A single Dynavap bowl of decent flower will get me feeling buzzed. 4 bowls, I'm glued to the couch for 2-4 hours. I don't use very often though. Sometimes a few times a week, sometimes months without using.
I think it just affects everyone differently. I’ve never felt a thing from edibles. Don’t get much from high thc weed. Best thing for me are infused joints. Even some of those are hit or miss.
I haven’t smoked or consumed thc in a year. I took a 10mg edible with a friend a week ago and we went to a hockey game and I felt like my stoned college days laughing about stadium hot dogs. Everyone is different. But tolerance builds more and more the more you consume and more frequently
Weed was pretty new to the american mainstream culture, from being just something used by immigrants in the early 1900s to being embraced by the counterculture in the 60s to finally becoming legal some places in the 2010s. During all that time, the law of prohibition was making it more potent, to make it easier to smuggle.
Now that it is legal, it is easier to get it in a regulated dose in whichever strength you want, just like you can have alcohol at pretty much any strength.
That said, a lot of the vapes are still solidly in the gray market and kinda sketchy.
Not at all. The US market was dominated for a long time by very low quality Mexican cannabis, where the growers seemed to treat it like industrial hemp production, producing large bales full of stems and seeds, poorly cured, with little regard for THC content. As it became more difficult to smuggle their bulky product across the border into the US, Mexican producers responded by smuggling in the laborers, instead, to produce the same low quality product inside the United States, on clandestine farms on public lands. Law enforcement responded to this with aerial surveillance, forcing growers indoors. That’s the point where quality began to improve, as growing indoors is more technically challenging, creating more proficient farmers, and quality improvements allowed the more expensive to produce indoor cannabis to compete with low quality outdoor grown cannabis.
Only once indoor production began to dominate the market did concentrates like hash oil begin to become common, as the more technically proficient growers gained the expertise to produce it, and had an economic pressure to maximize THC yields from what at that point had become agricultural waste, with a more discerning consumer now unwilling to smoke anything less than seedless flowers.
Trying to maximize is only part of it, the other really big thing with legalization and commercial growers is consistently predicable and measurable strength.
I usually prefer edibles, which were not really a thing the way they are now. I can go to a store or online and order a pack of edibles in a very wide range of concentrations, all lab tested and certified and each piece is incredibly consistent.
The same goes for flower; a grower can produce a crop and tell you exactly how strong it is, and I can take that information and use it for consistent dosing. There's really no guesswork or wondering if the "super strong bud" is actually that, or not at all, or "I took one puff and I can now smell sound" strong. You are right though in the amount of the latter that is produced and just how strong it's getting, but that does seem to be plateauing somewhat.
One good thing about high % weed though, is if you're simply using it to get high and smoking it, it's a lot less volume to have to smoke, which is overall way better for your throat and lungs.
