Their argument for your ex-partner by them is that they're a minority of a minority so it doesn't matter.
I've heard this from conservatives verbatim. When you point out how intersex and trans people are both more common than redheads, they just dismiss it as "Well that's still a tiny number of people."
Or in other words "My argument makes sense if you just ignore all the things that prove it wrong."
