More target practice for Ansarallah, eh?

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 7 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 28 minutes ago)

There's an anarchist who is really cool, one that I genuinely appreciate (and they're an egoist - generally I don't vibe with the egoists) who will straight up die on the hill that AI is an accessibility tool and that it's a very beneficial thing.

Here's my position:

Many disabled people need or heavily benefit from tech like PCs, whether it's for gaming or accessibility stuff or comfort shows or socializing or making art (will return to this in a moment.) AI is pricing everyone out of ram and GPUs, putting often very important tech out of the hands of disabled people.

AI is used to parse job applications and it does sentiment analysis and detects anything anomalous in terms of writing style or tone and it filters it out or scores it lower than writing that fits the norm. This creates additional barriers to disabled people getting jobs and joining the workforce where they have communication differences.

Education is strongly shifting back to exams because it's now one of the only ways to assess learning that doesn't permit the use of AI - almost every other form of academic assessment can be fudged by use of AI and often there's no way to prevent it. This sucks because exams test for performance under exam conditions and for a vast array of disabilities, exams are hell and disabled people perform poorly under them so AI is putting education out of reach on that count but also, as above, assessors are using AI to mark papers and provide feedback which sucks if your ability to express yourself within the expected norms is not easy/possible, not to mention if your ability to parse implication is impacted by your disability. Basically AI does vibe-marking and vibe-feedback so if you aren't a native at vibe-communication then you get punished by being marked down by AI and the feedback will be to improve the vibes and it will give you vague, vibe feedback which can be very hard to parse.

Disabled people are routinely pushed out of employment and into the margins of society, often due to lack of accessibility. Since the dawn of capitalism, disabled people have disproportionately occupied roles that make money through commission work that can be done at the discretion of the disabled person - things like editing, sex work, and especially art and crafts have been generally more accommodating avenues for making a living for disabled people. AI is decimating these freelance industries, especially if Grok continues with its creepy shit, and this means that it's putting crucial and hard to come by income further out of reach for a demographic grossly overrepresented in poverty statistics due to discrimination (including structural discrimination), and this demographic usually has much higher living expenses so if their ability to generate income is negatively impacted by AI then it also puts access to education, healthcare, suitable accommodation, and social participation further out of reach for a demographic that typically struggles in these domains because they have higher needs or atypical needs in some/all of them.

AI exploits psychiatric disability. (Yes, it's psychiatric disability and not just the sugar-coated "mental illness".) It fosters psychosis and delusions in vulnerable users, it encourages people to violent acts (not to mention criminal acts) and to clocking out early. AI can be extremely harmful to some people with disability.

I'm very dubious that AI can be called an accessibility tool but, presuming that it is one for argument's sake, it's a Faustian bargain of an accessibility tool because while it may put some things closer within reach for some disabled people, the broader effect is to make things overall far worse and much more inaccessible for most disabled people.

I'd get really icy over someone doing this to me.

At best it comes from a place of good intentions but there's a fair chance that it comes from a different place as well. As your chronic auDHD burnout buddy, I can assure you that I've had people pull similar shit on me because they either want their free resource to start working consistently again or they feel latent discomfort/helplessness about being confronted by my own circumstances and, instead of owning that and dealing with their own emotional reaction to it, they project it out onto me and demand that I start doing x and y so they don't have to experience that discomfort or helplessness anymore. Which is really selfish, although not uncommon, and I'm going to liken it to when someone misgenders a trans person and makes a big production out of apologizing which, ironically, creates a whole lot of additional emotional labor for the aggrieved party - if you misgender someone then the last thing you should be doing is centering your own discomfort and essentially forcing forgiveness out of the person you misgendered; don't go putting more on someone else's plate while you convince yourself that you're doing the right thing and that you're helping them. That's a very self-centered attitude.

I think I'd tell them that I don't take kindly to the presumption that I'm not already doing everything that I can, that they know my circumstances better than I do, and that although I'm not opposed to them talking to their therapist about me if it's about navigating their own stuff like emotions, boundaries, and our friendship, I am very disappointed that they are conveying what they assume are my symptoms to their therapist on my behalf without my consent (which is tantamount to gossip) and that I'm even more disappointed that their therapist saw fit to diagnose me in absentia, that this was very poorly handled by their therapist, and it feels like a violation of their professional ethics.

This would likely burn a bridge but, honestly, I don't have the time or the energy for that shit (see above re: chronic burnout) so if that's gonna burn that bridge then I take a "so be it" position. A therapist should know much better than to dive headlong into triangulation and to be so careless about it, even if that's not what is going on here (not that they have the ability to know the truth of it). It's extremely reckless of them.

Caveat to say that, clearly, I'm bringing in a ton of my own emotional baggage into this discussion right now and that's coloring my response to it so take what I've said with a good pinch of salt and maybe run it by someone else who is trustworthy and has good emotional awareness before you go agreeing with what I've said here because I'm very much in my feelings on this topic.

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 2 points 14 hours ago

Much love to you too, comrade!

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sounds like you did a fantastic job. It sucks that it went through that shit but you controlled the part that you could control, and you did exceptionally well. That's all that matters.

I don't want to diminish how much it must suck for you right now but you faced a nightmare scenario head-on and came out the other side intact. Yep, it was a big waste of time and money and, yep, a therapist should never act that way but you handled that shit and if there's a silver lining it might be that if you feel anxious about opening up to a therapist in the future you can look at it from this perspective - what's the worst that could happen? Because you've already been through it. It definitely sucks but you know now that it's not gonna break you and, with a little luck and some distance from this shitty day, the fear of opening up to a therapist is gonna have much less of a hold on you.

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Hey, you did it and you got through it. That's what matters. Fuck that guy, acting like it's a bad thing to want to keep your partner happy and to have a secure place to live (??)

A half-decent therapist understands that people have all sorts of motivations for attending therapy and they'll work with it regardless, it unless it risks direct harm to themselves or others (e.g. an abusive spouse wanting to get the therapist in on the gaslighting.)

Thanks for the update. Take your time to decompress. Sounds like today you discovered that your misgivings about this therapist were well-placed and that your judgement is more trustworthy and your ability to keep yourself safe is more reliable than you might have thought. Here's to surviving a tough day!

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (16 children)

You got this. Therapy is about what you need to live well, it's not about your therapist. If they try and center ~~your~~ their needs (whoops, my bad) then that's a big red flag and it's your sign to run.

You absolutely do not need to attend the full session. If they start trying some shit with you then you can—and should—call the session to a conclusion early. Boundaries are what we put in place to protect ourselves and you are allowed to protect yourself. You need a therapist that's in your corner but more than that, you need yourself in your own corner. If the therapist interferes with you being in your own corner then it's time to say "Okay, I think were done here. Thanks for your time. How much is today's session going to be?"

(For reference I had a bad psychiatrist that didn't listen to me when I kept going back saying that I couldn't continue with the side effects of a medication and all they did was up the dose, tell me that the side effects mean that it's working [yeah - it's working in the wrong way and that's what I was trying to tell you the whole time, dipshit], and after months of this I ended up in a psych ward. We had an appointment that I think they scheduled for me in the ward before they released me and so I went in for it and we had a very awkward session then I made an appointment for the next month in full knowledge that I wasn't going to attend as a final "fuck you" because if you didn't listen to me sounding the alarm month after month because you didn't take me seriously then why would you take me seriously when I make an agreement to attend an appointment with you? Though I try to be less spiteful these days lol and a big part of that for me is by establishing healthy boundaries.)

At the earliest age kids learn by failing over and over again and then, at some point, we decide that past a certain age it's no longer socially acceptable to learn by making attempts and, instead of people being polite and encouraging learning, people shame attempts and any mistakes. It's ridiculous imo.

When it comes to learning language there's definitely a developmental stage in our brains that makes it easier to pick up a new language but I swear half of the reason why it's hard to learn a new language as an adult is because of the deep-seated fear of humiliation that society instills in us over what is just a natural part of learning.

Fuck that shit, what a ridiculous arrangement and all we get out of it is stunted learning opportunities and higher rates of dementia.

You're welcome. Tell your friends!

There's also a spin-off audiobook channel that has socialist-leaning stuff which isn't strictly theory, so books more oriented towards matters of history and sociology that don't fit within theory itself but which contribute to it (e.g. a comparative biography of MLK and Malcolm X or a book looking at that time that Henry Ford attempted to create a utopian company town in the middle of the Amazon jungle). That channel is here but be aware there's also some fiction mixed in there like Amitav Ghosh's Ibis Trilogy which is likely of interest if you're keen on imperialism and colonialism and the drug trade but it's not a work of nonfiction.

The historical books there can help flesh out your understanding of the world and to connect theory to real-world events and the fiction is intended to be a sort of palate cleanser that doesn't stray far away from stuff like history and materialism.

It was. A semicolon is used where each sentence/clause can stand independently yet they are also related to one another; if you can start an entirely new sentence that makes sense by itself yet it could technically also be joined to the prior one using a comma then a semicolon fits.

Like the em-dash it's a really handy punctuation tool for people who tend to use lots of subclauses and run on sentences (not naming any names here lol) because if you're putting a list with commas in it then dropping a strategic and appropriately used semicolon improves readability because it signals "we're not listing things now and this isn't another subclause, we're moving on to a different phase of writing but also it's not a completely different thought - these two parts are interrelated."

There's yellow parenti podcast and red menace. I haven't kept up but a lot of the theory podcasts were kinda meh imo, hopefully they've improved though.

If you're looking for actual theory audiobooks though, there's a lot over on TankieTube, in particular this channel but adding those audiobooks to a podcast player is gonna depend on how feature-rich your app is and it's not going to work as a feed unfortunately.

I think it would be kinda fun for us to make our own predictions for 2026 on bingo cards and to see how it turns out as the year unfolds.

I'm too inconsistent to actually coordinate this due to my health but if someone wants to do something more formally then feel free to take this idea and run with it. Or just post your own 2026 bingo card here and gloat in the comments when it turns out you were right, I'm not the boss of you.

(If anyone decides to run a formal event I will hand over a funny username that I've been holding in my mind which I have no use for that you can do something with. It's all I can offer 🥺👉👈)

Edit: I made a template

Windows is shit and it keeps getting shittier, AI is shit too and everybody knows it but it's hard to step outside of the Microsoft ecosystem if it's all you've ever known. I really like Linux myself but it's just not that easy to get your head around, especially if you're not that tech savvy or if you're used to things working in a particular way on Windows.

A lot of the Linux tutorials online presume an intermediate level of familiarity with how Linux functions which is fine but it creates an artificial barrier to adoption for newbies but this channel seems to pitch their videos at a really good entry level with decent production values and the videos seem to be nice and succint. It's going to be interesting to see where it will be in a year's time. So if you've just switched to Linux (in particular Mint, but some of it is more general beginner's Linux stuff too), if you're considering the switch, or you know someone who is then you might appreciate this channel.

[Add in something about new year's resolutions and switching to Linux to be topical and to make the post feel relevant]

That is all. End communication.

The mod files below don't seem to exist anywhere else on the internet, although they might be floating around in a dusty corner of the internet archive or behind an old forum that requires logging in which I haven't come across. Here's how to run them:

  • Navigate to the installed files for the game and find the 1PARM folder

  • Rename the existing Plyr_all.arm file in that folder to something like "ORIGINALPlyr_all.arm" or "humans.arm"

  • Download the undead, greenskins, or elves ,arm files

  • Rename the file to Plyr_all.arm and place in the 1PARM folder

  • Start the game as usual

You will need to swap around the files and the names depending on what roster you want to play the campaign with. The elves roster only starts with a few elf troops and then the game reverts to the human roster after the starting lineup. There are probably better mods out there somewhere but I haven't gone looking for them, I'm just preserving a small piece of modding history.

Also if you like retro games or you want to play a spiritual ancestor to the Total War games, you might like this game.

Enjoy!

The economy is fucked and it's gonna get worse. You might live in a food desert right now or the food desert might expand to where you are living. Getting started on growing your own vegetables seems like it's really difficult and requires a lot of know-how and a whole lot of the right things - the right soil, the right amount of light, the right amount of watering...

All of this is kinda true. But it doesn't have to be.

There's a way to get around a lot of these problems and it can be done quite cheaply. So today we're Demokratkytizing Hydroponic Vegetable gardening and we're not gonna overthink this one.
(Keep in mind that this is intended to be the easiest on-ramp for starting out with growing vegetables, especially for the people who don't know where to start and those who don't have access to soil or who don't know how to remediate soil etc. If you're above this level then that's fantastic and this is probably not for you but this might be a good way of getting a friend or comrade started on their journey.)

Remember: the best time to learn how to grow a victory garden was ten years ago and the second best time to learn is right now.

Ingredients

  • A clean 20L bucket (5 gal) with a lid

  • A pool noodle (alternatively: an EVA foam floor tile or cloning collars)

  • Any hydroponic nutrient (Powder or liquid, liquid is easier to manage)

  • A tool to measure your hydroponic nutrient fairly accurately (Precision scales for powder, a measured pipette or syringe barrel for liquid)

  • A hole saw between 2.5-5cm diameter (1-2"), approximately (Alternatively a round cookie cutter of roughly the same diameter)

This is what we're gonna be making

Steps

Cut 4-8 holes below the rim of the bucket that are reasonably evenly spaced, ensuring that the holes do not cut into any structural support parts of the rim.

If you're using a cookie cutter, heat it up and carefully press out holes. (Remember not to use these cookie cutters for food now that they've been used on melting plastics.)

You can use other methods but they are going to be more difficult so I'd opt for a hole saw or a cookie cutter here.

Remember to avoid these bits when cutting the holes so they stay intact

More holes doesn't necessarily mean more better, but I'd recommend doing 6-8. This will be explained in detail below.

Now you're gonna make the collars to fit these holes.

Cloning collars are the easiest and the most accessible, but likely the most expensive. You may need to cut out a wedge to get it to fit in the holes if they are a bit big. It should be snug without being overly tight.

Pool noodles are probably the cheapest option. Cut a disc that is roughly 3cm (1") then cut a wedge out of the disc to get it to sit snugly in the hole you just cut. Here's how to do it

Here's how to make them out of EVA foam tiles

Once you've plugged every hole up this way, the next thing is to fill your bucket. You can use reverse osmosis water or rainwater or even tap water. We aren't overthinking this.

Measure out how much water you can put into the bucket until it reaches the holes you just cut. You can either use a large measuring jug or you can put the bucket on some scales that are designed for people, write down the weight of the unfilled bucket, then subtract that from the total filled weight.

You should end up with about 15L (4 gal.)

Now you need to add the appropriate amount of hydroponic nutrient. Follow the directions on the package closely. Remember to double check your maths and know that, while accuracy is good, slightly undershooting it is better than overshooting it.

Once you've done this, you're almost there. The next step is to find some easy to grow plants or to make some cuttings. This is beyond the scope of the post but I'd start with whatever is cheap and easy, as long as you will have a use for it. I'll make some suggestions at the bottom.

If you get some seedlings, remember to gently rinse off as much soil media as possible without damaging the roots. Then remove the pool noodle/collar/foam plug and place the plant in the center. Gently ease the roots through the hole and resituate the collar so it sits snugly and holds the plant securely. Check the inside of the bucket to ensure that at least half of the roots of the plant are submerged in the water without the stem being submerged.

Repeat until you have your plants situated in the bucket to your satisfaction. Now place your bucket in a location that gets full sun for at least 6 hours per day, unless info tells you otherwise.

That's basically it. You're done!

FAQ Section

What hydroponic method is this?

This is called the Kratky method - it's a passive, non-recirculating hydroponic method.

Don't you need to add aeration to the liquid so the plants don't die?

Not for this method. Your plants will grow air roots at the top of the bucket and, as the water level drains, the topmost roots will gradually be exposed which allows for the plants to get as much air as they need.

How do I refill the bucket?

Mix up around 2L (2 quarts) of hydroponic solution.
Top it up as you need but no higher than 10cm (4") from the bottom point of the holes - you need an air gap!

Don't refill a bucket from almost empty to almost full in one go. Give your plants time to adjust and refill it by 2 or 3L at the most, and do this once every couple of days until the bucket is refilled.

It's ideal to leave one hole plugged but unplanted so you can use it as an observation/refill hole.

Do I need to sanitize the bucket first?

Probably not. Clean your bucket and rinse it well, it should be fine.

Can I stack buckets on top of each other?

You can but be careful that they don't topple and that you aren't going too high.

Remember that you've cut into the sides of the buckets so I wouldn't go higher than 4 buckets tall.

Try to put buckets with fewer holes at the bottom because they'll have more structural integrity than ones with more holes.

Is it better to plant more per bucket?

No. Less is often more.

If you have smaller, fast growing annuals like lettuce or parsley then you can max out your planting but if you decide to go with big plants like tomatoes or a perennial like sweet potato then these will get very thirsty and you might only want to grow 2 or maybe 3 in one bucket.

You want this to be fairly hands-off. If you're refilling the bucket every other day then it's going to be a burden and there are better hydroponic methods available if you're growing this much in one container.

Can I use a smaller bucket?

You can use 10L (2.5 gal) buckets but I'd really only use that for a top bucket in a stack or for smaller plants. 20L (5 gal) buckets are ideal and offer more versatility if you want to change things around.

You can also use smaller containers like clean ice cream tubs but you will need to plant in the lid and to grow smaller vegetables/herbs and keep a closer eye on the water level. This is better for windowsill gardening imo.

Can I put some plants in the lid?

On the top bucket, yes. See above re: how much to plant. The lid of the top bucket can be used for bunching plants as well.

What about plants that grow in clumps like bunching onion or lemongrass?

This is where you will need hydroponic media and net cups or similar, and this is beyond the scope of this post. I'd leave this for another day and I'd research different methods but, for now, start simple. Get familiar with the process and then tackle bunching plants when you feel you're ready.

Can you use this method indoors under grow lights?

Yes.

What plants do you recommend?

It depends on your climate but try your hand at taking cuttings from herbs like mint or basil, especially if you can get them for free.

Other good options are non-heading lettuce and other vegetables that you can pluck the outer leaves from, like many Asian leafy greens.

Semiaquatic plants will love hydroponic growing and three really good options are sweet potato (grown for its leaves), kangkong/water morning glory, and watercress. These are great beginner plants that don't require much care as, once they are established, they should take care of themselves.

Are there any plants that don't tolerate this growing method?

Some plants don't like hydroponics. Of the ones that take to hydroponics, only a few don't like this method. The majority of common vegetables and herbs will be fine with this method although I wouldn't try growing potatoes this way.

If you aren't sure, just search "kratky + [plant name]" and see what people have to say. If that doesn't pull up any results then try searching to see if the plant handles hydroponic growing.

How can I make this more accessible for me due to physical disability?

Set the bucket up in the location you want it to be in before you fill it with the nutrient solution.

You can buy pot stands with castors to put the bucket on if you need to move it, e.g. to find the right position for it.

Consider putting a larger, more comfortable grip on the handle, perhaps using a length of pool noodle, to allow for better grip of the handle if you need.

Place a bottom bucket filled with water, soil, rocks, sand, or anything heavy to raise up the growing buckets to avoid the need to bend too much (if you grow a vining plant on the bottom bucket then once it's established you won't need to bend over to harvest it as it will grow to reach a comfortable height for you.)

Aren't I supposed to use reverse osmosis water and adjust the pH and check the TDS?

You can, but don't overthink it. We're going for the most simple option, not the most perfectly optimized one.

You will sacrifice a small amount of productivity and efficiency this way but remember that the most unproductive garden is the one that goes unused and that chasing efficiency, paradoxically, often becomes extremely inefficient.

We're keeping this as simple as possible.

Won't it grow algae?

Yeah, some. It's not that big of a deal though.

Darker colored buckets are better for preventing algae, although don't worry too much as lighter colored buckets do just fine too. You could probably paint the buckets black or you could cover the bucket in burlap fabric or similar if you want to but it's really not necessary and doing this risks overcomplicating it and blowing out the costs and the time it takes to make a set up.

What do I do if I get extremely hot summer sun where I live?

Bring the buckets inside if it's really bad. Otherwise, shelter the bucket from the hot afternoon sun especially and ensure that there's enough liquid in the bucket to get the plants through the day.

Hydroponics is good for hot weather as it provides all the water a plant can absorb and the water creates a good thermal buffer that takes longer to heat up vs a pot plant with soil.

What do I do about frost?

Bring the buckets inside and opt for frost-tolerant plants.

Will water get in the bucket and dilute the solution?

Probably in very small amounts. It's not a big deal so don't worry.

How many plants is too many?

It genuinely depends on the size of the plants. For small plants like salad leaves and herbs, 6-8 is fine. For larger plants 1-2 is enough.

If you find yourself constantly refilling the bucket with nutrient solution then it's time to consider making a new one to take the pressure off the current bucket by transplanting.

What do you recommend for plants that grow large or set heavy fruit?

My advice is to avoid it until you're familiar with the method and to use pool noodles (especially if the disc is cut a bit wider to accommodate the extra weight on the stem.)

Also keep it to one or two plants per bucket.

Happy gardening!

You've seen it, I've seen it, we've all seen it. It's minimising to call it schadenfreude when it's really more like mörderfreude or something.

I just saw a video of a progressive reacting with glee at someone telling them a story about an (alleged) Trump supporter who is reliant on the Affordable Care Act in the US to be able to access healthcare. The story goes that he voted for Trump in part because he promised to get rid of "Obamacare", oblivious to the fact that this is the buzzword used to refer to the ACA upon which he relies, because (and this is where it strays into being exaggeration or apocryphal) Democrats bad, Obamacare bad, I hate Obamacare and I hate Obama.

The story continues and the narrator does the big reveal - you just voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and now you won't be able to access the healthcare that you rely upon. The person reacting to this story shows increasing amounts of joy as it unfolds and, at the reveal, is gleeful and toasts the camera, taking a big gulp of their drink.

Many such cases, I get it, but it just blows my mind that:

  • They didn't recognise it as a failure of the US political system that a person could vote so hard against their own interests

  • They assume that they democrats are on the right side of history and that they serve the best interests of the average person

  • They didn't seem at all bothered by the fact that maybe Kamala could have run on a platform of "He's taking your healthcare away - vote for me if you want to live" and won but her team failed so egregiously by not communicating this idea effectively

  • They also have 4 years of Trump to deal with - they and their loved ones are also in the same situafion but they're acting like it isn't a big deal; they and everyone they care about is in the same queue for the slaughterhouse and yet they haven't figured out which way the line is moving because they're too distracted by the grisly excuse for "entertainment" which is happening ahead of them

  • They would rather convince themselves that they have the correct opinion than to win or for there to be access to healthcare

These people are so smug and impotent and filled with ressentiment yet they have zero shame or self-awareness. Assuming this story is true and not just erotic fanfiction for the sadistic progressive, which is a very good possibility, where is their outrage about all this? A person who is politically naive, who is presented as being below average intelligence, who is duped by the vile bourgeois media and a despicable political system which is a grim mockery of democracy is, at the least, going to end up very unwell—if not homeless or even dead—and this scumbag is happily putting on their dancing shoes in anticipation of being able to celebrate when this person gets put in the ground??

You failed. Your team failed. Your system failed. Your democracy failed. And because of this consistent and ongoing series of failures, you hear that a person is going to suffer tremendously and probably even die but your response is to celebrate? This is some utterly depraved shit.

The next time a progressive claims to be left wing I'm not going to dispute it, I'm going to agree and tell them "Yes - the left wing of fascism." The only consolation is that it's shit like this which only serves to accelerate the collapse of the US, but it's very meagre consolation indeed.

That's a wrap for today. Hope to see you at the next one!
