The problem is that a fuckton of the web is SEO poisoned, so even a better search engine will find garbage because for a lot of subjects garbage is all that’s available.

The best chef in the world can’t turn shit into anything you want to eat.

[–] arken@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

This is what they want you to think but they're hardly even trying. Google is shitty on purpose because if initial search results are bad, you "engage" more and see more ads. And since they're not worried about competition because google is the default search nearly everywhere -- most people don't even know there are alternatives, google is synonymous with search -- they can enshittify their search as much as they want. https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/ https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/

[–] Forester@yiffit.net 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Explains why it so good for finding porn

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Tbf, it's not hard to find porn on the internet:-D.

In terms of results, yes. But at least there's no ads, nor sponsored results, nor bloody AI crap.

Asked Google assistant today what the withdrawal symptoms of Adderall were... got told the suicide prevention hotline. So, that was fun.

[–] ShunkW@lemmy.world 28 points 2 years ago

To be fair, any drug of abuse potential will usually trigger SAMSHA links in the US by law. That might have been what you saw, and it's been that way for at least a decade.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

That's... Less than helpful.

(Also, I can try to field this one for you: headaches, fatigue, mental fogginess, sometimes temporary depressed mood or irritability, maybe increased appetite?)

Today I was trying to look up the syntax for how to search before a certain date on Google. The google AI overview turned out to be wrong

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 37 points 2 years ago

"nope", but it's a 100-word excerpt from Reddit that pops in just as you're about to click a link and shifts everything down.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 30 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Well in fairness I've never been to Italy, so it's possible it doesn't exist.

[–] csm10495@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I have been so it does exist. However I've never been to Greenland, so Greenland may not exist.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 15 points 2 years ago

Yeah, but I haven't met you so...

Does Italy exist?

Google: Blue right?

[–] RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well i guess i don't really exist then.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 36 points 2 years ago

I'm sorry you had to find out this way.

[–] umbraroze@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm in Finland so I can only give a sad forlorn look toward Italy and say "First time?"

Anyway.

Now:

Me: "What's the weather like today?"

Computer: "It'll be 25°C or so."

Me: "How do you know that?"

Computer: "I looked up your location and queried the national weather service."

Soon:

Me: "What's the weather like today?"

Computer: "It'll be 25°C or so."

Me: "How do you know that?"

Computer: "Fuck if I know. I've just learned that is a thing that people apparently say in situations like this."

[–] Facebones@reddthat.com 8 points 2 years ago

You: "How do you know that?"

Computer: "u/trollface69420 says 'Its always 25°C or so lol'"

[–] ZeroCool@vger.social 15 points 2 years ago

Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, Mothman, Italians. All folklore.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I switched to the French search engine Qwant. Much nicer.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 35 points 2 years ago (2 children)

But every result is a recipe for baguettes

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Can't find anything wrong with that.

It's worse than broken - every time you use google you encourage them, financially, to make it worse. Stock market capitalism. stop doing it.

The CIA: "we fuckin' knew it!"

[–] not_amm@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 years ago

It has become so bad for results in Spanish too, that I am now self-hosting SearXNG even though I'm the only one using it in my family lol

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune also have rings, so the search from 2 years ago was also inaccurate.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 31 points 2 years ago (2 children)

If I ask for "planet with rings" and my first result is Saturn, I consider the search functional.

If my first result is an ad for planet fitness, I do not.
