But you haven't clicked yes on any of the offers yet...

Let's set up your subscription to your own hardware! Continue / remind me later?

Would you like to back up your folders to OneDrive?
It would be a shame if something were to happen to your files!

[-] Shady_Shiroe@lemmy.world 103 points 1 month ago

Without windows and macos, we would all be divided on what is the better distro, but thanks to shitty corpo trash, we can unite to hate them together. Fuck windows!

[-] RandomVideos@programming.dev 31 points 1 month ago

Ubuntu could have taken windows spot

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

They are nowhere near close to windows

[-] tomkatt@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago

Amazon based search results integrated in the Unity dash beg to differ. Canonical has a history of being shitty.

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago

There was backlash, they removed it and never tried anything similar since. But I'm with you on that, the idea was insane and if they pull anything like that again, I'll be switching away from ubuntu immediatly.

[-] rottingleaf@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago

There were a few good lenses for Unity, like the porn one.

Well. in the modern day, there's Ubuntu 22.04 and up with their insistence on snaps for many otherwise native apps. For example, Firefox as a snap and taking anywhere from 30 seconds to up to 2 minutes to launch when you first open it.

I used Ubuntu for years, pretty much from 16.04 all the way up to 22.04 but that was a line for me and I ditched it for Manjaro. The experience has been much better overall.

Snaps should be for applications that may not receive updates on current systems or have a hard dependency on old libraries for some reason. Things like Spek come to mind. To use if for something like Firefox, and not only use it, but insist on it to the point you can't install the native version without ridiculous workarounds... it's absurd. And on top of this, it's especially dumb because flatpak already existed prior to snap, but as usual Canonical had to be special instead of working with community standards.

My wife started joking about " if I update it at this point it's gonna brick it" and I laughed so hard because she's not even an IT person

[-] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 46 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Due to all the registry and group policy changes I've made to decrapify Windows, I'm legitimately worried that every major update will brick my install. Luckily so far they've only make it worse in the ways that Microsoft intended.

"New device detected: mouse. Please wait…"

But the mouse is already working dude.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 25 points 1 month ago

At least it doesn't make us restart afterwards anymore.

[-] kevincox@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 month ago

"Mouse movement detected, please restart for changes to take effect."

[-] Underwaterbob@lemm.ee 50 points 1 month ago

Anyone remember the early Windows 10 update that booted back up with a black screen that said "Don't Panic"?

That was the most panic inducing moment I've ever had with any PC.

[-] renzev@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I remember reading a post from some person who struggled with hallucinations and was absolutely creeped out when that large, semi-ominous text appeared on their laptop screen out of nowhere lol. Then again, this was on r*ddit, 97% chance they were making it up for upvotes.

switch to gnome; customizations are intentionally buried because a huge majority of users don't go very deep w with them.

I wonder what I’ve said no to more all-time - Microsoft’s spy- and bloatware or the YouTube tv free trial.

[-] ulterno@lemmy.kde.social 9 points 1 month ago

The Void

Why though? That looks like an XP era game. Does it not work with proton?

[-] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Ran into a game breakinf bug on linux. Maybe they patched it by now, but I doubt it.

Jesus, I don't miss that shit. Now, it has to be something way the hell out in left field to not be picked up and installed silently. linux-firmware ftw

I admit to being old and out of touch, but why is this meme a sandwich?

[-] CatLikeLemming@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 1 month ago

The original meme template, to my knowledge, was something along the lines of "People be like "Subway sucks". Bro, you made the sandwich." and then it was tweaked a little, tweaked a little more, tweaked a little more and we ended up with this and even more absurd versions.

[-] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago
[-] renzev@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

A while ago I saw this meme about the exact experience you're having right now. We've come full circle lol.
