Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I had someone get mad at me once because I ended an otherwise innocuous text with a period. I was like, it doesn't mean anything. I was going to write another sentence, but then didn't. Stop imagining secret meanings.

I think they were my worst ex partner, come to think of it.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (6 children)

That was very much a milennial thing about 15 years ago. I didn’t get it at all, adding a period was somehow like a sign of passive aggressiveness or something.

Thank goodness that seems to have faded away.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 45 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Thank goodness that seems to have faded away.

What the fuck did you just fucking punctuate at me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills!

Jesus, thank you, civilized conversation!

It's still a thing. The new rule is: never end a paragraph with a full stop, otherwise it's perceived as overly formal or cold. You can still use them within paragraphs, it's only the very end of a paragraph you omit it

At least, that's the rule my autistic ass has reverse-engineered. Also, lol cannot have any punctuation immediately after it like "lol.", otherwise it comes across as flat and half-hearted. You need to restructure your whole sentence if that happens

[–] wols@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

Interesting, I haven't come across the paragraph part before. I think the period at end of message went away mostly because it is redundant. Once you hit enter, the message is finished and this is very easy to see in the user interfaces of today. So you save some keystrokes which can be nice especially when you're sending multiple messages in quick succession.

I suppose a similar argument could be made for paragraphs: the end of the paragraph is already clear from the vertical spacing, a final period doesn't add anything functionally.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe an older millennial thing but I remember the big thing being β€œwe have full keyboards now so no more t9 speak”. That included using proper punctuation.

That being said, as an anxious person I still end almost every text with an ! so people don’t think I am upset.

Yeah I was pretty taken aback when someone first told me about this. She got mad that I ended a text with a period. I was like "what, that's just proper punctuation." And then she got even madder because she thought I was being a grammar snob. I was so fucking confused.

Later she said that it's like saying "period." at the end of a sentence, and accused me of knowing that and only pretending not to. But like, if I wanted to sentence to read "period" at the end, I would have typed the word "period."

I got really insecure and hypervigilant about ending texts with periods after that. It took me years to get over that and even now I still get anxious about sending texts with periods in them...

[–] Beth@piefed.social 22 points 2 days ago (4 children)

This is why we millennials add lol to everything I swear it. I’ve also evolved and started adding :). I hate sending work emails because I can’t do either thing, so I’m just the bottom frame gal in my mind.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Millennial here. I used to think of emojis as unprofessional, but then my current workplace started including them (and cringey slang) in important messages.

So, I readjusted my expectations. Limited emoji use = professional.

Then last year, I used the angry face 😠 along with a message. That seemed to concern people?

So now I'm wondering if "happy" emojis are allowed professionally, but negative ones aren't (just as negative emotion must be hidden in all other aspects of society, I guess?)

I don't know. There are no written rules. I'd rather we all go back to just using proper grammar and full sentences like we used to for work communications. I'm both too autistic and too old for this trendy shit.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 6 points 2 days ago

That's correct, you are only allowed to use cutesy or positive emojis. Which is why I strive to only use the most obscure

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 5 points 2 days ago

It really depends on your who your workers are, but I absolutely don't use emojies in work emails. I do use them in teams messages though.

Emails are for conversations I want documented. Chat messages are the equivalent of a desk conversation.

Also, yeah, angry emojies are still taboo at any type of work chat for me. Can't be seen as angry at the office.

As a an anxious millennial I add: cool, πŸ˜…, πŸ˜†, 😊, XD or 😬. All inappropriately placed.

That's why you put a tilde at the end of everything.

See you there~

[–] gilokee@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

this is why I like tildes. "see you there~" is cute and not overly excited sounding.

[–] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've never seen a tilde used that way before, but if I ever saw that, I would think they have worms or something. Or it's a Gen-Z version of the ellipses... Like that which I've heard youngsters mock Gen-X for using ellipses...

[–] gilokee@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

really? I'm a millennial and my girlfriend used it in like 2009, that's where I picked it up lol.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's why I end all of my texts with "bitch"

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

See you there, bitch!

I punctuate because I'm writing. Seems fitting, no?

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Avoid punctuation

Remain mysterious

Is that why there seems to be hardly any punctuation left? I see this over and over again in the posted screenshots and comments here, and it drives me absolutely crazy. Punctuation serves a purpose, but most importantly, it makes the crap you ejaculate into the ether easier to read. This text was written by an autistic old man.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

just to be safe i never use any punctuation at all that way there is no risk of any misunderstanding it has never caused me any problems

[–] bryophile@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I don't know if you're being sarcastic?

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I'll give you a hint: it was painfully hard for me to resist capitalizing the "I".

I wanted to write it in a way that actually would be misunderstood due to lack of punctuation, but it was too much of a cognitive load. In my native language it's really easy: for example, the difference between "No, I'll do it" and "I won't do it" is just a comma. But in English it's not that easy.

My therapist likes to end texts with ellipsis... Apparently my partner's mom does this too, so maybe it's a boomer/old person thing...

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My kids therapist would do that too and it always made her seem Ominous.

Like:

β€œI’ll see you two next week …”

Like, are you threatening us?

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

That's exactly what it was for me and, before I realized I should stop reading into it because she's my therapist and direct communication is the whole point, I thought I might've said something weird.

[–] GiveOver@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago

It's old-fashioned informal writing. Until about 20 years ago, the vast majority of writing was formal writing. Formal writing follows formal speech patterns, with proper sentences and commas and full stops. This is what you'd learn at school. When we talk informally, everyday, we don't actually talk like that. We talk more in fragments. An ellipsis is sort of the old person's way of separating these fragments. Younger people tend to press enter and send another message to separate the fragments. Maybe the oldies get annoyed at young people sending multiple messages when it could have been one.

[–] Monument@piefed.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A colleague signs his emails with his name followed by an ellipse, with no sign off pleasantry.
It always seems like he’s sulking.

Monument…

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

That's psychopath behavior

I know this is comic but if I received a "SEE YOU THERE" text with all caps I would be taken aback. They are shouting at me.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

save yourself the hassle and just skip the reply entirely!

[–] Zensate@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

That's exactly what I mean

[–] Ardyssian@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Sure, see you there! :)

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep, accurate - one of the reasons i normally skip punctuation at the end of private messages and either replace it with an smiley, lol or … .

[–] kadotux@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

It's somehow funny that you decided to end this sentence with a dot which otherwise would've ended with three dots :D

See you there 😎
