Comic Strips
Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.
Rules
-
π Be Nice!
- Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
-
ποΈ Community Standards
- Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
- Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
- Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
- Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
-
𧬠Keep it Real
- Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
-
π½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due
- Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
- Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
-
π Post Formatting
- Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
- Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
- When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
β Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
β Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
-
π¬ Post Frequency/SPAM
- Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 π) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 π) will be removed.
-
π΄ββ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)
- Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
- Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
-
πΏ Moderation
- We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
- When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists
The following artists are banned from the community.
- Jago
- Stonetoss
- GPrime85
It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.
Web Accessibility
Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.
When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:
Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

That was very much a milennial thing about 15 years ago. I didnβt get it at all, adding a period was somehow like a sign of passive aggressiveness or something.
Thank goodness that seems to have faded away.
What the fuck did you just fucking punctuate at me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills!
U wot m8
Jesus, thank you, civilized conversation!

LOL
Well done, lol.

definitely not just a millennial thing, I've had gen Z friends call me out on using proper punctuation in online messages lol
Really? Guess some are carrying it forward. Nonetheless, seems spotty. Itβs not something I have had to deal with in a long time.
It's just a way people indicate tone. Online communication is developing its own grammar and punctuation rules to get around the shortcomings of written language to succinctly express emotion/intent
Written language is evolving, the period being the pointed end to a sentence may lead to a new punctuation mark as the period only becomes βokβ as a separator.
Or maybe we go full comma, that would be weird, I think, yeah,
This is possible but doesn't take into account that the likely reason the period went out of fashion as a sentence terminator is that the need for having a terminator in the first place has diminished.
The need has absolutely not diminished, in fact in written language itβs more important than ever.
Sure, in between sentences. But there's no need for a period at the end of a message. Just look at the comments. There's many without a period at the end, and some with. I thought it was kinda silly at first to prescribe meaning to it as well, however it works well as an indicator of tone, and punctuation at the end of a message doesn't really have any other purpose now that messages are contained within their own bubble
I just went through 4 years of university as an elder millenial, the youngins still feel this way and I honestly thought it was a Gen Z thing. I'd never encountered the punctuation issue before I decided to go to school again
It's still a thing. The new rule is: never end a paragraph with a full stop, otherwise it's perceived as overly formal or cold. You can still use them within paragraphs, it's only the very end of a paragraph you omit it
At least, that's the rule my autistic ass has reverse-engineered. Also, lol cannot have any punctuation immediately after it like "lol.", otherwise it comes across as flat and half-hearted. You need to restructure your whole sentence if that happens
Interesting, I haven't come across the paragraph part before. I think the period at end of message went away mostly because it is redundant. Once you hit enter, the message is finished and this is very easy to see in the user interfaces of today. So you save some keystrokes which can be nice especially when you're sending multiple messages in quick succession.
I suppose a similar argument could be made for paragraphs: the end of the paragraph is already clear from the vertical spacing, a final period doesn't add anything functionally.
Maybe an older millennial thing but I remember the big thing being βwe have full keyboards now so no more t9 speakβ. That included using proper punctuation.
That being said, as an anxious person I still end almost every text with an ! so people donβt think I am upset.
Iβm an older millennial and I basically refused to text more than a three-word sentence at a time up until, oh, probably 10 years ago because I hated typing on my phone. I doubt I used punctuation at all.
Has it? I'm really asking. The only one I text with regularly is my son, and I taught him to use punctuation, and he knows I prefer it.
AFAIK. My kids are texting fools. I asked, itβs not a thing. However, getting upset about any manufactured slight due to punctuation is a thing.
