Metallica frontman James Hetfield criticized entertainers who use concerts to promote political messages during the band's performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas on October 10.

Addressing the audience, Hetfield said Metallica was not there to influence fans with political agendas but to help them escape the outside world through “love, energy and heavy music.”

His remarks came weeks after rapper Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour following his onstage “Free Palestine” speech in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Although Hetfield did not name Macklemore or any other artist, his comments have drawn attention over musicians using their platforms to address political issues.

The whole Napster thing 25 years ago already showed me these losers don’t believe in anything other than embiggening their wallets.

They played a gig at a Salesforce conference recently. They're officially yacht metal.

And Master of Puppets

[–] CommCat@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The music video is heavily based on the film by Communist Dalton Trumbo. The song itself seems heavily influenced by Trumbo's novel/film, but Metallica denies it. According to them it was all a coincidence. I think I also read that they bought the rights to the film so they don't have to continue paying royalties.

They used clips of Johnny got his Gun in the MV, they knew exactly what they were doing.

Remember that US victory lap you did in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union? Yeah..."not political".

Metallica fucking sucks anyway. Their shit is written for cis white uncs who think they're better than everyone else just for the music they listen to.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are genuinely great albums but Metallica is currently doing its best to ruin even that

[–] stink@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

I like the album where the guy holds the balls

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 34 points 1 week ago

McDonalds frontman (and fellow clown), Ronald McDonald, criticized restaurants that use meals to provide nutritional value

help them escape the outside world through “love, energy and heavy music.”

yeah, it'd be a real shame for anyone to even try to fix or improve the conditions they're hoping to escape from lea-dysphoric

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Did anybody ask him for his opinion or did he just decide to be a loser dweeb unprompted?

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's the thing about Metallica they've always been loser dweebs and their fans are loser dweebs as a result.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I saw it best put that they’re the U2 of metal: leader singer is a knob, guitarist is overrated, they haven’t put out a good album in decades, but they still fill arenas because people want to hear the classics off their 80’s/early 90’s discography.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

so fuckin true, double true because they've always been massive wankers

[–] derry@midwest.social 25 points 1 week ago

So he's cool with genocide, got it

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

Why are they such crybabies?

[–] EatMoreMacroplastics@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Playing at the Sphere is in itself a political statement, one that positions artists within a mode of cultural production that is fully aligned with capitalism. The entire venue down to its archietecture and audio, lighting and visuals systems only makes sense within cultural politics that produce rock stars, that make it economically viable for a tiny handful of artists to play the same location over and over again, charging astronomic ticket prices from a crowd that makes attending the show part of a vacation in the absurdist city-turned-theme park that is Las Vegas.

Obviously somebody who has adapted to that is deeply uncomfortable with anything that may endanger the mass appeal of their art, and probably also the owner of the Sphere, James L. Dolan, who is not only a close associate of Trump and ofc also has SA allegations against him, but who has in the past also been known for his obsessive stalking of a trans woman at New York Knicks games.

I'm not even gonna get into the Napster stuff or how much Lars Ulrich sucks, everybody knows this.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

Foulcault would have had a field day writing about the sphere. ‘Here we have the global panopticon manifest as a smiley face, reveling in Capitalism’s largesse and tacky excess’

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

He's planning to be the first band to play in Gaza after it's taken

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

And Justice For All was famously not a political album.

[–] AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Oh right, they literally have a song called Don't Tread On Me on that one.

[–] AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Fine! No steppies for you then top-use-words

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

Dude is the definition of a sellout. Like it's a toss up between Metallica or U2 when it comes to people pointing out bands that sold out and only care about the money.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Post-Cliff Metallica really ain't shit anyway. Some tracks from Justice are aight, but let's keep it real.

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Political is when you are disruptive by merely expressing your non-status quo political beliefs nowadays lmao (bad vibes to James et al)

Non-political or apolitical is when you don't challenge anything politically of the status quo but instead reguirgitate it (good vibes to James et al)

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Metallica was uncool and not very heavy when i was a kid. Some things never change i guess

[–] stink@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember telling some Gen-Xer at a party that Metallica wasn't metal and he got all flustered about it

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

I can imagine that interaction perfectly

at least its easy to find better bands than metallica

[–] stink@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Like disturbed, oh wait...

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

This one actually did bum me out a little bit when I found out. I don't like all their stuff, but there's at least one song on each album that I liked.

[–] muhg@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 1 week ago

I don't think I've ever cared less about a musician having a lib take. I already think Metallica are wayyy too bougie, this changes nothing. They've always had lib ideas.

[–] The_Filthy_Commie@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 week ago

I am forever vindicated in my disdain for Metallica. I never liked their shitty music, then they cried about Napster, and now this.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

Gimme fyoo gimme fyaaaa gimme dawaeydesah but no politics pls

[–] beanenjoyer@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This chud is dead to me since he displayed pride in their music bring used to torture iraqi pow.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago

I think skinny puppy were the only ones to actually try to do anything about that

W.A.S.P. was another one of those bands. After they found out, they made a whole fucking album for that shit. But we pretty much already knew they were massive shitlords; really a "fork found in kitchen" moment.

Napster BAD

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

what a fucking moron lmao

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

Wouldn't saying youre trying to help people escape through love, energy and heavy metal imply your show contained any of those 3 things?

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago

Leaders of generic metal think music isn't generic enough

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Im aware people like him gives zero shits about anything but I will say this and lib out a bit, this is the same fucking alcoholic dickhead that was part of making And Justice for all is truly something and the whole Napster thing with that band (i really like the U2 of metal analogy from PKMKII) just make everyone outside of like maybe Newstead(unless he's not a good person too as I haven't heard anything outside of bass being MIA due to rest of the pos members)
