Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

remember that live-streaming murder is fine but god beware somebody posts an exposed nipple

[–] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 120 points 1 week ago

A drag queen is somewhere nearby! Quick, distract your children with this family friendly, televized execution by firing squad!

Phew, that was close! Those kids almost got traumatized by seeing something inappropriate!

America is a fucking cluster fuck.

[–] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Somehow my brain interpreted "fucking clusterfuck" as something related to fried chicken. My brain thought "cluck," the sound a chicken makes. It is fun to live in my brain sometimes.

Holy fuck, they are live broadcasting an execution. That is literally a George Carlin skit.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago

And the guy is in a wheelchair too. It's grotesque.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Carlin was our prophet! I miss him so much.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I've found more faith in his words than any religious figure. He wasn't a prophet so much as a historian of how stupid and fucked up humanity is.

Content mods ONLY care about advertiser revenue and will bend over for every dollar. If hosting this gets clicks they'll do it. This isn't the face they'll make.

[–] Sharks@pawb.social 21 points 1 week ago

Recently became aware of advertising companies restricting their ads from being shown next to artwork of two characters kissing, it's insane. Freedom on the internet is now threatened by ad agencies. They are actively monitoring peoples artwork for this...

People shouldn't be censored for mentioning suicide. The way most of the internet handles any mention of it is a bit silly. Like, I don't think sending an automated bunch of links to resources is gonna be helpful when your cry for help was removed and you're back to being alone.

It's fine to talk about suicide.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Won't anyone think of the marketers? Can you imagine having your brand name sullied in an internet meme just because someone dies? It's unthinkable!

God forbid human communication be human centric. We have to protect the brand integrity of the companies waging war against our insecurities. Better to send some links, shift liability, and delete the offensive posts.

People shouldn't be censored for ~~a lot of things~~ anything. Can we agree to stop playing the turn a blind eye to reality game? The older I get the more I get sick and tired of that shit. My comment got auto modded because I wrote that someone called me a fg-t in public. Great success?

I think the main reason its happening at all is because tiktok shadow banned for it, and youtube did too. If everyone hears their favorite influencer saying "Sewer Slide" or "unalive" eventually thats just the word for it.

I dont think anyone except those desiging platforms care at all, and they onky care because advertisers

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 31 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Do the stations have to broadcast it? Can’t they just say ‘we think it is reprehensible to turn an execution into a public spectacle’?

Yes, but the people running the FCC are petty and will punish them for it. Still, it's an obvious PR win to take a morale stand over this.

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No. They will have an open and shut case under the first amendment to choose not to broadcast. We still largely have the freedom of speech in this country, such as it is.

[–] disorderly@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Specifically freedom from compulsory speech, in this case. The freedom to not be forced to say something has a much better track record than the freedom to say what you want.

We'd really like it if all of your affiliate stations would broadcast this. It would be a shame if your license renewal got held up in review.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 week ago

That's why I only watch assassination vids on watchpeopledie, where it belongs.

[–] GrumpyGrampa@lemmy.zip 26 points 1 week ago

These “ automated mods” being used by Reddit, Threads, among the many other social media forums have basically ruined their own intended purpose of allowing Free Speech for the masses! Basically useless overmoderated garbage, while posting murder, suicides, hate and death on their sites and expecting us to stay political correct! HYPOCRITES!

[–] M137@lemmy.today 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Who the fuck thinks that word has been censored for 15 years? It's only been a few years where that kind of censorship has been common.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 1 week ago

Yeah but the last two years have been at least a decade.

Gang rape has always been around. Just not always livestreamed.

Trump is going to livestream a murder by firing squad, because that's what the dictators he desperately wants approval from do.

I don't think that addresses the question. At least not the question that led me to go "huh?" when I saw this.

Which is that...yeah, the US is going to be murdering a dude on livestream. But what has that got to do with "content mods" who now "have to host" a video?

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Where you think this going be live stream from? Broadcast Tv? No this will be on Twitch, YouTube etc. Hence the words live streamed.

[–] john_tech@lemmy.zip 36 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm sorry, the US government is live streaming a guy's execution ON TWITCH?? This feels like a Florida man headline

[–] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 week ago

It turns out when you elect Florida man as the president you get a lot of Florida man headlines from the executive branch.

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

Well yeah we literally have a florida man as president now so...

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Nothing I have seen has said anyone will be "forced" to host it. They'll find some platform that is specifically willing to promote fascism.

[–] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 1 week ago (5 children)

They'll find some platform that is specifically willing to promote fascism.

So almost every major social media platform and probably a handful of streaming platforms?

Yes, because Google and Amazon are such staunch opponents of fascism that they'll need to be forced.

Pretty sure they could just stream a webcam to the white house website without a video sharing platform needing to be involved.

It's not an assassination. It's an execution. Assassination makes it sound like this guy is some kind of martyr instead of a mass murderer, which he is. That's what he's being executed for. Doesn't make execution a good thing and it's definitely fucked up that they're televising it and using a firing squad, but it's not an assassination.
