I do find it interesting how you people are willing to accept that corporations have a tremendous amount of power over the internet content they consume, but do not consider if their apathy or despair is indeed an intended consequence of what they are shown.

2027

CNN: “The United Stares has again vetoed sending aid to Palestine and Ukraine in the latest UN vote…”

Apple: “We’re so pleased to announce the 20th anniversary iPhone! It’s starts at $2,999….”

My previous phone unexpectedly became a brick, that I haphazardly tried to reanimate and probably made whole situation worse.

On a new one I proceeded to not install most of doomscrolling apps I used, and my main source of news now are my 70+ y.o. colleagues. Quality of life significantly improved, zero regrets.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Sounds nice, except for this part:

my main source of news now are my 70+ y.o. colleagues

Since people their age will generally tend to get their news from Faux News and/or the worst parts of Facebook..

[–] ivan@piefed.social 5 points 16 hours ago

Nah, in this part of the world 70 is a bit above Facebook age bracket, and people will roll their eyes if you try to tell them what is happening in US, partly due to unflattering opinion on Americans.

I've decided to shake up my news gathering, and will now only take on board what my 75yo mother in law has read on Facebook.

What could go wrong?

My bad. I must have nodded off on the keyboard.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 16 hours ago

😄 It happens 🤷🏻

I'm a huge advocate of e-ink phones for a similar reason. Genuinely been a huge benefit ditching the traditional smartphone.

I also want to have the privilege of ignoring the news, and everything will be fine.

Except while I do that, some people actively make our life worse. I still experience the consequences, just much later and firsthand.

Why the world has to be this shit when is my time to be an adult???

[–] rowansprig@leminal.space 2 points 8 hours ago

I'm with you bro. But I feel like at least a few of my problems are self inflicted. I need to get up, get out, move around, sleep right, eat right, drink water, and build community. There's a torrent of bad but I want to be part of making things better, y'know?

Easier said than done, but also the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step? Idk take care brother

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It's absolutely insane how many oled screens have TikToc burn in. The amount of hours just on that screen has to be absolutely astronomical.

[–] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 1 points 14 hours ago

you should get rid of all short form content from your life.

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 4 points 19 hours ago

That’s not right, on the top one shouldn’t everything but the headphones be a black silhouette?

[–] Sly2@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (2 children)

Just one more interwebzpost about politics, and everything will change bruh, I swear, just one more anonymous web "discussion", where we only insult each other and it'll get better bro!!11 I promise

Join the struggle while you may,
The revolution is just a t-shirt away.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world -3 points 19 hours ago

Is the idea that the hatemongers talking shit to anyone who thinks slightly differently from them are trying to make things better? Because I'm pretty sure most people like that, at best, do not care if things get worse.

[–] shiftymccool@piefed.ca 3 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

All that stuff is still happening whether you see it on your "nightmare rectangle" or not. Sticking your head in the sand doesn't make the nightmare end

[–] protist@retrofed.com 27 points 20 hours ago

Awful stuff has been happening all over the world forever. Feeding it into your face 24/7 is what's different

[–] titter@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I just call it "my obelisk"

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 3 points 19 hours ago

No smoking in the obelisk room

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

What can you personally do about what's going on in Gaza? Can you personally assist the people who died in the flooding in Nepal?

If the answer to those questions is 'no', then what value is there in actively sticking your face into the biting nest of news all day long?

We didn't evolve to be able to tolerate that. At best, we're able to comprehend the struggles of maybe 100 people around us. Not the entire planet's worth of hardship.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 7 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, if we have to wait for the entire planet to be sunshine and rainbows all day every day for everyone forever, then we'll never find inner peace or be able to enjoy a moment of happiness. And neither can anyone else.

If we can allow ourselves to have those things despite the suffering in the world, then the amount of suffering in the world will be reduced drastically. Certainly not entirely, but by nature of the fact that everyone can find a moment or two each day to appreciate the little things, the compounding effects of suffering will be mitigated.

It's called "the second arrow" in buddhism. The first arrow is the thing that makes you suffer. The second arrow is your internal response to the suffering, which only compounds the suffering even more without changing anything. It comes from clinging to a sense of "it shouldn't be this way," a refusal to accept reality on reality's terms.

That's not to say we should be callous. A common misperception is that buddhism says we should abandon the world. That's not the case at all. True buddhist practice awakens the heart of compassion. You'll feel the suffering of the world immensely if you're doing it right; more than you ever thought you could. The difference is that you learn to feel that suffering, and acknowledge it for what it is, without resisting reality as it is. That actually increases your ability to respond to it with empathy, because you're not burning yourself out emotionally.

Non-resistance in the buddhist sense isn't passivity though. You can still take proactive measures to reduce suffering in the world, and you absolutely should. Buddhism encourages this. The difference is that "non-resistance" is an internal state-of-being in which you can feel the suffering of the world, and not let it break you. What you must accept is your own suffering: the pain you feel when you watch others suffer. To resist that is to be callous. It's the "first arrow" that one must learn to welcome into one's flesh, because to resist the first arrow is the second arrow itself.

We can hold space for the suffering of the world, and still enjoy a gentle breeze, or a warm cup of tea, or the smile of a loved one. To not allow ourselves these simple pleasures, is to not allow the world its simple pleasures either. That only increases suffering. Buddhism does not encourage such rigid asceticism, contrary to popular belief.

It's not "accept pain and deny yourself pleasure." That's dogmatic masochism. This isn't a Herman Hesse novel. It's "let go of your attachment to pleasure, let go of your resistance to pain. Just let go." The difference might be subtle, but it's important.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

It's about your circle of control. If you can't do anything it's not worth worrying about.

Vote in every election. Join groups that set up protests and show up. Help your local community. Join a mailing list that lets you know when to contact your reps about topics you care about.

And that's it. No reason to consume the rest of the garbage.

[–] Meatwagon@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

But what are you going to do about it right at this moment? Presumably if you're like me you already know who you're going to vote for, or at least certainly who you're not voting for. Anything major will pop up in some feed somewhere so you don't have to listen to whatever dumb shit Trump said on Tuesday.

I get a daily digest from NPR and that's enough. A 15 minute browse then I'm done with the "news" for the day.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 17 hours ago

Yeah but what good's all this tech for if you can't reduce your own mental state by force feeding yourself doom

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Imagine if Obama wasn't a disappointment, the movement we thought he was bringing was real, and trump never got elected and instead got laughed out of every room he gave a speech in. Some of us might still be mistakable for the guy in the top panel.
