Well, there goes the 20% less shitty aspect of his mayoralty
And for what?
They're still gonna call him an antisemite until he gets the NYPD to start executing protesters in the streets
And even then!
Welcome to c/electoralism! politics isn't just about voting or running for office, but this community is.
Please read the Chapo Code of Conduct and remember...we're all comrades here.
Shitposting in other comms please!

it would be kinda funny, if they yank his budget chain even more next year, but it’s not a given tbh, smarties might decide to give him 2 bucks for free buses to show benefits of being a company man.
I don’t know why they whipped aocia so, for example, with some appointments where they chose dying from cancer guy, she is already yours, she endorsed dying joe biden when everybody dropped them, is it some kind of achievement score they are keeping or years in service?
is it some kind of achievement score they are keeping or years in service?
Megadonor approval rating, probably.
These politicians spend hours each day on the phone begging rich people for max out donations. Look up "call time".
The problem hasn't changed. Elections are expensive and there isn't enough grassroots money to offset the funds from the rich. Politicians are going to sell out because they can't keep up otherwise...
I was told before Mamdani won that electing a social democrat is actually a step backward. I didn't understand. Now I do.
I was wrong about him too. Oh well, hopefully it's one of those lessons that we only have to learn once.
I'm a little pessimistic because next time it will be "this time is different, he's super based and says all sorts of things that I like to hear". Some because they never went through it and some because they are just desperate to have something as easy and gentle as getting a few socdems elected. "This is how real change is made. How many elections have you won, ultra? Start a revolution tomorrow if you are such a Marxist!"
The cycle continues
TBF non-electoral organizing isn't working well either. At least now from what I can see in the US. So what options are left?
My point is that the victory they are claiming is hollow and their approach is structurally incapable of producing the outcome that they allegedly want.
IDK this feels too harsh. Getting the pre-K for tons of families is the opposite of hollow. We need to be careful not to handwave real improvements in people's lives because we have ideological issues with the official.
I agree, and we should give the Knesset due credit for maintaining universal healthcare coverage for Israeli citizens. Social Democracy is objectively the left wing of the Adults in the Room.
And you wonder why no one takes you people seriously?
'I told you so's are not super useful, but there are definitely some DSA-heads around here that should be starting to reconsider the strategy they have been pushing. I don't think it's really possible to argue that Mamdani is acting in a way which can be turned into positive movement for socialism. I tried to be open, and even recently let supporters convince me that they had a strategy (even if I didn't believe it myself), but we are definitely at a point where that should be considered as a failure unless his betrayal was accounted for somehow.
Why would they do that? This website is more about vibes based declarations of strategy rather than an evaluation of potential outcomes and what they mean for future strategies.
They were badly analyzed strategies for sure, thats proven by how it turned out. Idk if it was vibes based and therefore bad or just misplaced and bad
I think "I told you so, accept you had the wrong idea and help us try something else so we can stop losing" is useful though.
The co-option of leftist energy has a long history within the Democratic Party, and these DSA-affiliated candidates are just the latest iteration of that
Unfortunate, yet not at all surprising.
Shared this with some of my lib friends and apparently Zionism is all well and good if it means a few New Yorkers get affordable housing and groceries. I hate this country.
I said it elsewhere but I'll say it again: people who will throw away solidarity with the most vulnerable and turn a blind eye to mass murder in exchange for a moderate improvement to their material conditions do not deserve those improvements.
I personally despise those people, but I don't think there's much use in talking about who does or doesn't "deserve" to have rent take up a third of their income.
Point taken. It's hard to keep the bitterness in check so I appreciate the pushback.
Let's see how they do Jewish Voice for Peace. That should tell us how he plans on directing it, however the real fear is how those who come after Mamdani will yield them.
The whole antisemitism worries are already baked in the plethora boondoggle
that is the NYPD. They don't need a specific force or more money.
I do fear this will enable the pigs and actual Zionazis.
Zohran should be criticized for how he's dealt with the NYPD specifically, but I think this is a bad article.
Current laws and police forces can and have been weaponized against anti-zionist protesters under the guise of anti-semitism, and they've never needed a special task force to do so. That doesn't mean antisemitic hate crimes are a fake problem or shouldn't be addressed, and dismissing all efforts to fight actual anti-semitism plays into the zionists hands.
Zionist efforts of conflating the two has made the discourse around this a nightmare, and playing into that framing is a trap we should avoid. This article falls into that trap and borders on dismissing antisemitism as a problem made up by zionists and Zohran as a fool or a sell-out for trying to address it, or that addressing antisemitism at all is helping to support Israel and the fucking genocide.
If you have a large minority population that feels unsafe, that's a problem and it's worth addressing. A Jewish-supremecist nation, which presents itself as the world-representative of all jews, is engaged in genocide. How can this not lead to a rise in anti-semitism? Israeli politicians want their to be a rise in antisemitism abroad to justify their position that Israel is necessary because jews will never be truly safe outside Israel.
It also seems like the primary focus of this effort is through education, and it seems like they are decoupling Israel and Judiasm:
When the New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, announced the city’s first-ever municipal strategy to address antisemitism – a nuanced, multi-pronged approach ranging from greater security measures for synagogues to an increased focus on Jewish history in public school education – critics were quick to note what the 33-page document does not mention at all: Israel.
Those who praised the plan saw the omission of Israel as a welcome and deliberate effort to separate what has so often been conflated: antisemitism and criticism of Israel, which can veer into antisemitism but is not that by default.
Mamdani’s plan “makes it really clear that Israel is not a synonym for Jew”, Lila Corwin Berman, director of the center for American Jewish history at New York University, said. “Jews are not the same as Israel."
“In a very material way it is resisting what I think is a vector of antisemitism, which is the conflation of Jews with the state of Israel, which tends to produce some awfully antisemitic kinds of actions.”
I am open to being taught otherwise if I'm wrong, but I don't find your points convincing. I must confess that due in part to the Apartheid Defense League's "sharp rise in antisemitism" incident tracker consisting mostly of Zionists seeing anti-genocide rallies and wanting to play victim, I do find claims of increased antisemitism much less credible. Not quite Nazi-who-cried-wolf levels of less credible, but getting there.
If you have a large minority population that feels unsafe, that's a problem and it's worth addressing
If their feelings match reality, yes. I don't know how many times Zionists have to pretend to be afraid while aiding genocide before people notice that that "fear" is being weaponized so they can play the victim while committing genocide. Or does Zohran's plan only allot extra security to explicitly antizionist synagogues that do not send money to the genocidal settler-colonial occupying state? Because if so then my apologies, hostility toward antizionist Jews who support the liberation of Palestine and the complete dissolution of Israel would in fact be antisemitism and should be opposed. It would just be very inconsistent with everything he's done so far to make such a principled distinction, so I assume that's not what he means.
Will that "extra security at synagogues" be used to stop neonazis from carrying out hate crimes against a vulnerable minority, or will that extra security be used to crack down on anti-genocide activists trying to disrupt the illegal land sales which Zionists conduct at some synagogues to sell land in occupied Palestine to prospective settlers? Because there's been a lot more of the latter than the former lately (Jews are indeed not the state of Israel, and more congregations need to start acting like it! )
Muslims have far more cause to be afraid for their safety in NYC (and the US at large) than do Jews, but I've never seen a big initiative like this to protect Muslims. It probably wouldn't play well politically for Zohran to undertake such initiatives either and he's a savvy careerist. Still, it makes me doubt that he cares about responding to the fear of a vulnerable minority.
More generally, I don't know how it's possible to have watched Mamdani cozying up to liberal Zionists since he got elected and throwing anti-genocide efforts under the bus and conclude this is anything other than more Uncle Tom bullshit from him. His choice to center Jewish feelings is a ploy to show that he's not antisemitic, but it won't stop Zionazis from calling him antisemitic anyway because he has a history of verbally expressing support for Palestine even as his material actions in power betray that cause.
The rise in antisemitic incidents is according to the NYPD, and is basically violent and property crimes. It's hard to find statistics on this or details of all the crimes, but it seems to be split 50/50 assault/vandalism, and antisemitic crimes make up about half of all hate crimes in the city. These incidents have been up since oct 7th. Overall it's still a safe city, and there aren't a lot of hate crimes generally, but when NYPD is reporting a rise in hate crimes, and the community is reporting that they feel less safe, it's a problem. There is probably issues with how the NYPD counts these crimes, but it would still be a mistake to dismiss the issue.
Ok. I was refwrring to https://www.adl.org/resources/tools-to-track-hate/heat-map which is different and includes a lot of not-actually-antisemitic incidents.
The point about the NYPD reporting does not really answer the question of whether these are antisemitic attacks or not. Are the crimes against Zionists or against Jews? This is an essential distinction. If antizionist Jews are being targeted by the far right for being Jewish then it's a hate crime. But if Zionists are being targeted for being Zionists by people opposed to the genocide then it's not a hate crime even if they are also Jewish.
I'd be shocked if the NYPD made that distinction or provided that crucial data, but the absence of it doesn't make it less crucial to have. I hate that I even have to question this but Zionists have weaponized claims of antisemitism so much in covering for their genocidal aspirations that scrutiny is required.
Yeah, zionists have muddied the waters on this deliberately. Zionists blame Zohran directly for the rise in hate crime because he's called out the genocide. Those groups are disappointed with this anti-semitism task force because it's not pro-Israel.
I have not been able to find a complete list of crimes by the NYPD., they only have a dashboard that doesn't go into detail. The incidents they highlight in news reports include things like stabbings and public threats ofremoved and murder that seem serious. You don't have to be a zionist to object to swastika graffiti, or people being stabbed.
You don't have to be a zionist to object to
swastika graffiti
Of course I object to hakenkreutz graffiti. That should be addressed as a general far right problem that threatens all minorities the way so many of us been organizing against the far right for over a decade now.
people being stabbed
Violence is a morally neutral tool and at this point my feelings toward it honestly depends on who's being stabbed. 6 year old Palestinian boy stabbed for being Palestinian? Absolutely I object to his murder. Antizionist jewish comrades? Of course I object to violence against them. Zionists? idgaf
. "Every city every place, punch a nazi in the face" applies to zionists too, if people actually oppose genocidal fascism.
I really can't take the claims of "antisemitism" in new york stuff seriously given how much islamenhasse there is which the government has never taken seriously, not even now under a Muslim mayor. Mamdani, by centering "antisemitism", is playing into Zionist hands by acting like judenhass is a special form of bigotry against a special minority group that is uniquely hated, uniquely vulnerable, uniquely persecuted, uniquely genocided, which is one of the points Zionists use to whip Jews into a frenzy of paranoia and fear internationally. Is increasing funding to combat antisemitism by 800% really going to flip racist zionists who pretend to think Zohran's the next Hitler over to loving him? Is it going to make them feel safe? Or is it just going to reinforce their persecution complex by showing "look, we're so persecuted that we need all this protection and also look, even all this extra spending hasn't made us safe so we truly are the most persecuted group!"?
oh no, his W:L went from 99:1 to 99:2... on the other hand, sad to say that all the theoretical gains from the anti-halaflation measures was eaten alive by Trump's Big Beautiful Great Depression and Operation Epstein's Fury.
anyways, sad to see all you doomers dumped all your non-vegan hopium eggs into one non-ethicly sourced basket and you instantly give up over a single crack. completely blind to the rise of mainstreamification of leftist politics???
Mamdani is not special because he is one man who will press the communism button, but because many more are soon to come.
What's that joke about how you can build a bunch of bridges and pubs, but nobody calls you the pubbuilder, but you SA one animal and everyone calls you a bestialiter?
Yeah it's like that with genocide. What wins has Mamdani had that offset advancing genocidal interests? Minor economic gains for NYCers do not offset selling out to Zionazis. In fact if NYCers are willing to sacrifice Palestinians for their economic gains then they don't deserve better conditions.
completely blind to the rise of mainstreamification of leftist politics...
many more are soon to come
Yeah that's the giant step backward is that ZoHHran and other DSA candidates are demonstrating how easily "leftism" can be co-opted and funnelled into fascist projects such as bolstering the murderous and genocidal DemoKKKratic Party. That's how we get Abdul El-Sayed running openly saying he's not a socialist and helping launder the image of KKKamala "Holocaust" HHarriϟϟ, Butcher of Palestinians.
True, but saying no to today's Nazis should be really easy. It's not asking much to tell people who support murdering babies to fuck off.
