Yank is only a word english people use for gently ribbing americans

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 40 points 3 days ago (3 children)

This person might literally be like 15 and trying to make sense of the words they've just now heard for the first time lol

Like, the people calling you gringo are not and never have been the same people that are calling you yank. They're just two completely unrelated terms by two completely different groups of people who don't like Americans

And you don't even have to really dislike Americans to use them, I've heard both these terms used endearingly

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Probably like 1/5 of the people we make fun of here are actual children.

Someone called me a racist for saying USian and told me I was trying to make them sound like Asians and I was dumbfounded because thinking that made them sound way more racist against asians than me.

[–] T34MediumTank@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 days ago

What are we a bunch of asians?

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

Well yeah, your racist against americans for comparing the ubermench to those subhumans. /s

[–] core@leminal.space 13 points 3 days ago

I'm personally a fan of burgerlander We're burgerlanders living in the burgereich

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 26 points 3 days ago

monolinguist spotted lol

the chinese for "american" is literally translated to "united states person"

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 34 points 3 days ago (2 children)

How is United Statesian a slur though? That is the literal translation of the demonym for them that is accepted and commonly used in Latin America? Estadounidense. Emphasis on dense I guess.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

United Statsian is the correct term for USians in portuguese and spanish (we rarely use outside of formal context because the name of the country sucks), it was used since at least the 1860s iirc. Gringo is not exclusive to americans though, it's more a term used to anyone who was not born in a Latin American Country or Family/Culture. Never heard Yank being used, just Yankee.

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 12 points 3 days ago

Here in Mexico most people say Estadounidense but will know what you mean if you say Americano. Interestingly I noticed that when people speak English they will say American though

Formal Portuguese borderline requires that its writers use multiple nouns for the same thing. Sure, it used to be in vogue to not use the word 'american' back in the 1990s. But, really, all actual writers just use Americano, Norte Americano, Ianque and Estadunidense regardless of connotation.

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ok cracker

Also like what the fuck how is United Statian a slur mf that's just a term for you that doesn't monopolize a continent. Also also "yank" can be used indearingly rather than as a epithet. Also also also "gringo" is only an epithet in certain places, afaik it much of Latin America it isn't use in a derogatory sense but it's used in the sense that people of the US monopolized the term AmeriKKKan.

God fucking damn it doggirl-tears

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

Everyone I've ever called a "yank" was endearingly... when I don't like them, I call them way nastier things!

I call myself a Statesian not as a slur, but because I want Turtle Island to be decolonized. What is this logic?

Plus yank and gringo still slap.

If seppo isn't listed, they have no idea what they are talking about.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

i think seppo is the most effective one because it mostly just confuses us, which in turn makes us mad

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

not difficult tbh

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

These cumskin seppos have no exposure to culture outside of their own that wasn't shown in a harem Anime.

Of course they're. Everytime we call them out on their imperialism and shit, they start to cry about "muh i got called gringo" as if they were not the most racist nation on earth.

Also, I wouldn't be messing with Brazilians, they might start spamming Vampeta Pictures in your DM for months.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

bet at least half those losers would consider being called gaijin in japan-cool endearing

Coming from someone on an international border, gringo as an insult is geography dependent I think. It isn't used here, it's guero. I've been called guero. Never been called gringo.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (11 children)

Guero means blonde or white too

In Puerto Rico we almost exclusively use it for Yanks. It can be used for a nonUS foreigner but it’s a bit awkward.

I propose Fissiv, a pronunciation of FSSV, which stands for Future School Shooting Victim. Alternatively there's Famsiv (FMSV)(Future Mass Shooting Victim).

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

i dunno, i get funny reactions with 'usian' sometimes.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago

I say usian, pronounced like Asian but with a u obviously

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

I do not recommend gringos going in attack mode with brazilians because of the "slurs", they will actually learned some new slurs.

Estragos Unidos is the most basic one.

We call them yanks and we don't care if they think it's derogatory. If we want to be derogatory, which is most of the time, it's dumb-yank or just fat cunt.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Sometimes I just feel like I need to make clear that I mean people from the US not from all of the Americas. Not my fault that there is no good word for "people from the US".
