Coming from someone on an international border, gringo as an insult is geography dependent I think. It isn't used here, it's guero. I've been called guero. Never been called gringo.

Guero means blonde or white too

I've mostly been called "wedo" by my latam neighbors

[–] microfiche@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah that's guero, sounds like 'wedo'

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago

Lol see thats just how white I am. Never felt it was a slur, in fact more a term of endearment like when the lady at the corner store calls me mijo

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I think thats Guero. mostly Mexicans use that, it just means like "white person/european looking", it's very common for friends/couples/vendors to call people that. In some countries in South America (and Haiti) we usually call loved ones and friends "black person" because that mostly means bro/darling/sweetie even if they're white.

Lmao I am just realizing that is the actual word for the first time because I am comically white. I have never once been offended by either, though I will say when I hear gringo something about it sounds a tad more aggressive, at least in the context I usually hear it.

If someone says like "Gringo de Mierda" they are just being rude towards you. But the word Gringo itself is harmless

[–] microfiche@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago

Yep, that's right.

In Puerto Rico we almost exclusively use it for Yanks. It can be used for a nonUS foreigner but it’s a bit awkward.

Gringo is not an insult it literally just means someone who is not latin american (which usually are mostly usians or canadians bc those are the guys who we most interact with).
