I can't believe they'd all rather put pins on their pants than on their hats.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Half of those are for participation. Other half for swimming.

Lmao that nasty-ass smog in the background.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait till they hear about fog

Fog has very different occlusion and hue than particulate matter. You’re right that a video would make things easier to see though.

I've never been sure which is funnier, all the medals or the enormous hats.

[–] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To me it's the fact they all look like children trying to feel like big boys in their dad's too-large clothes (which is fitting (pun intended) since at least those medals are inherited, not for things they themselves have done)

There's a culture of being expected to wear any medals your father or grandfather earned. When you think about the kind of basic medals even western militaries give out, such as good conduct, long service, etc, three generations of those adds up quickly.

The DPRK also just really loves medals. It's not just limited to the military, they have medals for distinguished service as a factory worker or construction worker. They will even give long service medals to inanimate objects like industrial machinery.

They will even give long service medals to inanimate objects like industrial machinery.

I'm going to give my Gameboy Advance SP a medal for resilience.

List of highest-grossing kids' movies at the DPRK Box Office (and personal favorites of the Supreme Leader):

  1. Trolleybuses 3
  2. The Industrial Smelter that Could
  3. The Brave Little Hydraulic Flood Retention Basin

But seriously, giving medals to inanimate objects is kinda cute.

We give out medals like that in the US too though. Maybe we do plaques more, but we used to put years in service stickers on some of our longest/best running machines for fun. I think people universally just like to be acknowledged, and to have an excuse for a party.

Couple more generations they'll have a dress made of medals

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I think we should support men trying to be pretty. Otherwise we end up with nothing but boring grey clothes.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

Also their oversized jackets. They look like children dressing up in grownups clothes.

Do the medals mean anything? I did the military thing and have some medals and ribbons, and they each have specific meaning. Anyone can look at a picture and go to a wikipedia article and basically see when I served, what I did, etc. Are these just decoration? The US military is pretty active (unfortunately). I don't exactly see North Korea getting out there and fighting wars in the same fashion, so as to warrant such well decorated members.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Those are participation awards, in essence. They get them for attending ceremonies and the like, of course, they have no choice but to attend.

[–] Denjin@feddit.uk 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

North Korean officers can wear the medals of their family members. Most of those would have been given to people who fought during the Korean war.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's the least communist thing I've ever heard

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 3 points 1 day ago

It's like they're actually a monarchy or something.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 20 hours ago

I'm assuming you're unaware of the US.

Couldn't be me, I want my boys, and others, to actually learn. No half measures, no hand holding.
