This is equvalent of Germany retaining swastika as state symbol and whining that it's used as symbol of triumph against nazis. Of all symbols under which Japan done genocide and war crimes most are still in use like the state flag, the chrysantemum coat of arms, rising sun flag.

In other words, have you even symbolically tried to not be fascist, Mrs PM?

Saw a lib's reaction to this news and it was "the US should bomb this statue to curry favor with Japan and so that the Russians can't feel good about themselves"

great ~~man~~ statue theory

To paraphrase Mao on atomic war and whether a given nation's people would survive (and I am sure he would approve of this in particular were he asked): "What makes you think the world needs [Japanese]?"

The Japanese are heading down the road to war with China under a fascist PM as a US dog and battering ram. China and Russia both have the right under foundational international law established by the victorious powers of WW2 which gives the victors non-time-limited rights to use ANY force necessary to prevent re-aggression by Axis powers. In this view China has the right under international law should Japan grow too clearly belligerent (including seeking nukes or seeking to host them for clear use against China) to nuke Japan into a smoldering crater and would owe no one an apology for doing so on legal or moral terms.

Knowing this the Japanese should be rioting, they should tear down their government for the sake of their lives. But they do not it seems have a strong survival instinct and like USians are well beaten and trained dogs of fascism and empire. Hopefully their fascist rulers have one and a modicum of restraint as if they do not and war draws near I for one hope China does nuke them to prevent attack and not to the tune of one or two cities but the ruin of the Japanese nation and the total destruction of American and Japanese armed forces and related industry (and may Amerikkka collapse as well). An example for the whole world of the fate of fascists, of brutes, of barbarians.

Japan may be occupied but it does not have to choose this path, it can resist as occupied Korea does at times (and that is a dog whose military is fully controlled de jure by the US unlike Japan which has some freedom as written) and choose the path of non-belligerence.

I hope for the sake of the Japanese people that things do get out of hand and that they make the right choice and expel the Americans, refuse to repeal article 9 and refuse to seek atomic weapons or a massively expanded military and instead seek peace and cooperation with the rest of Asia rather than domination.

She seems to think that she needs to explain that the Chrysantemum Crest being destroyed could be interpreted as representing Japan. But it's the Victory over Japan Memorial! It's not a question of being "widely recognized as a crest symbolizing Japan"! It is literally symbolizing Japan right there in the statue, that's the only thing it's there to do and it is in the name of the statue!

I really liked the design of the border markings in golden kamuy chapter 160, the Japanese Empire in one side and the Russian Empire on the other. Are the Japanese still angry about losing that war?

minor spoilers from golden kamuyJapanese side: Japanese side border crossing manga Russian side: Russian side border crossing manga

They are calling it the most unhinged Japanese posting week.

Acknowledging that the USA using nuclear weapons was not necessary, and then blaming it on the USSR is insane mental gymnastics.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 12 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

"Look, we all know the US is a hive of irrational bloodthirsty murderers, so we had to rely on the Soviet Union to be the adults in the room and not provoke them"

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 19 points 12 hours ago

the opening of the manchurian front was explicitly part of the yalta agreement, what a batshit heap of lies

[–] edge@hexbear.net 44 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

He's basically right except the part where he blames the Soviet Union for it instead of the country that actually dropped the bombs.

[–] EveningCicada@hexbear.net 30 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Might as well blame Japan themselves for the bomb. They could have surrendered faster!

They tried but US was not interested.

[–] Lovely_sombrero@hexbear.net 22 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

Japan invents a time machine, goes back in time to tell the emperor to surrender sooner and the US drops the nukes anyway.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

"We see that you have surrendered, but tbh we really just wanna see how well these fancy new bombs work so we're gonna pretend we didn't see that"

[–] oliveoil@hexbear.net 5 points 5 hours ago

100% what would've happened

[–] huf@hexbear.net 36 points 15 hours ago

folks, there you have it. lenin, the tzar of all russians personally dropped the bombs on the islamic republic of japan.

Nice companion piece to the Soviet War Memorial statue in Berlin.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 45 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Attacking Pearl Harbor is kinda funny though, committing to the bit of "Empire across the Pacific" so hard that you go 2000 miles out of your way to bring the country with the world's largest economy into the war against you, pulling off a surgical decapitation strike on a military base when the key targets of several carrier groups were patrolling elsewhere.

[–] MarxMadness@hexbear.net 34 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

[In 1940, t]he United States placed an embargo on scrap-metal shipments to Japan and closed the Panama Canal to Japanese shipping. That hit Japan's economy particularly hard because 74.1% of Japan's scrap iron came from the United States in 1938, and 93% of Japan's copper in 1939 came from the United States... Responding to Japanese occupation of key airfields in Indochina (July 24) after an agreement between Japan and Vichy France, the U.S. froze Japanese assets on July 26, 1941, and on August 1, it established an embargo on oil and gasoline exports to Japan.[15][16][17] The oil embargo was an especially strong response because oil was Japan's most crucial import, and more than 80% of Japan's oil came from the United States.

The U.S. wasn't exactly out of the way: it was a huge trade partner that was shutting down all sorts of key commerce in response to Japan's expansion. A conflict was as inevitable as it gets.

Lenin predicted it in 1918, though he overestimated both sides economies and Washington Treaty prolonged the timeline.

We talk about American military mishaps (and the Axis were inevitably going to lose WWII regardless), but it really was an incredible fuck up on on behalf of the Japanese

The fascist urge to open a second front

Stunning tactical victory, pivotal strategic defeat.

Isn’t it a symbol of the Japanese emperor first and foremost?

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, it's a mon of imperial family used since medieval times, but since Japan don't have official Coat of Arms, its used as de facto CoA since 1926.

[–] RaspberryTuba@hexbear.net 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I know it because they’d put it on the bow of their battleships…

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 14 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

I'm curious, how does Japan feel about Israel? I want to say they probably support it and are like Germany, former WWII fascist axis and projects of the USA post-war now becoming more militarized and fascist again.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 8 points 8 hours ago

According to this poll I found from Pew, they aren't fans. Frankly it's worth noting that most people everywhere are anti-Israel, it's just the ruling class that are zionists. See 80% of democratic voters being anti-Israeli but the democrats refusing to do the popular thing because we aren't a democracy.

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 8 points 8 hours ago

On the whole, your average Japanese person is like your average Brit. A racist bastard. Of course they love Israel.

When I was there I did see one lovely old lady waving a Palestine flag though

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 11 points 15 hours ago

I want to say

But why would you WANT to say that though confusion
