i really hope a Democrat wins, only so i can see them say "we can't just roll everything back that he did, what if republicans decided to be mean to democrats!?"

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 53 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Hilariously, a few Democrats have already openly said that they wouldn't roll them back.

Really they’re saving time by doing it now instead of later when they’re gonna be busy signing checks for Israel and ICE

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago

In today's news: ratchet wrench still functional.

[–] Trioxin@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ratchet effect - when the right (inevitably) overplay their hand and are voted out, the center-"left" come in, and their job is to block any attempts to shift things leftward.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

But that’s usually for the shit their handlers actually give a damn about. I doubt their corporate overlords care what the lake and gulf are called. It’s moved from a political agenda to being a Pavlovian response.

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

They should pull an Obama era trick and make everything Trump did permanent. That will surely make suburban Republicans approve of them.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 45 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Rename Mt Everest to Mt America. The Indian Ocean to the American Ocean. Fuck it. Just rename Canada as America 2. Just go apeshit

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Every person, place, or thing shall hereby be referred to as America. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

[–] BGDelirium@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

I know it's not good opsec but just wanted to let y'all know I wanted to meet other Hexbears in my small town of America, in America County, a few miles away from America River where you can see the border my state of America shares with its neighboring states America, America, and America

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

Yawn, can we get a new bit, please? He already tried this with the Gulf of Mexico and it wasn't that funny the first time.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wonder what his thoughts are on New England

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

Should rename it Old America.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

when you can't address systemic issues, do meaningless self-aggrandizing bullshit

Ontario is a term thought to have Indigenous origins, either Ontarí:io, a Huron (Wyandot) word meaning "great lake",[16] or possibly skanadario, which means "beautiful water" or "sparkling water" in the Iroquoian languages.[17]

The Ojibwe word for it is “the leading sea” Niigami-gitchigami although my ancestors lived further west, naming Superior “anashinabewi-gitchigami” for themselves. The “Gitchigami” part (spellings vary and I’m bad at remembering the current version) means “sea” or “big lake” or “ocean” or all three, really shrug-outta-hecks

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Anashinabewi-gitchigami (or even "lake anashinabewi") sounds so much cooler than "lake superior". I know it's a tired thing to advocate for but I really feel like all american toponyms need to be renamed back to their native american versions, maybe picking the tribe that was closest to the toponym (or the coolest one) when there are different names.

[–] orlando@hexbear.net 23 points 3 days ago

i call a motion that we ignore this as completely as we can.

Cassius Dio, LXXII.15.2-6:

He actually ordered that Rome itself should be called Commodiana, the legions Commodian, and the day on which these measures were voted Commodiana. Upon himself he bestowed, in addition to a great many other names, that of Hercules. Rome he styled the "Immortal, Fortunate Colony of the Whole Earth"; for he wished it to be regarded as a settlement of his own. In his honour a gold statue was erected of a thousand pounds weight, representing him together with a bull and a cow. Finally, all the months were named after him, so that they were enumerated as follows: Amazonius, Invictus, Felix, Pius, Lucius, Ælius, Aurelius, Commodus, Augustus, Herculeus, Romanus, Exsuperatorius.

For he himself assumed these several titles at different times, but "Amazonius" and "Exsuperatorius" he applied constantly to himself, to indicate that in every respect he surpassed absolutely all mankind superlatively; so superlatively mad had the abandoned wretch become. And to the senate he would send messages couched in these terms: "The Emperor Caesar Lucius Ælius Aurelius Commodus Augustus Pius Felix Sarmaticus Germanicus Maximus Britannicus, Pacifier of the Whole Earth, Invincible, the Roman Hercules, Pontifex Maximus, Holder of the Tribunician Authority for the eighteenth time, Imperator for the eighth time, Consul for the seventh time, Father of his Country, to consuls, praetors, tribunes, and the fortunate Commodian senate, Greeting." Vast numbers of statues were erected representing him in the garb of Hercules. And it was voted that his age should be named the "Golden Age," and that this should be recorded in all the records without exception.

This isn't even funny its just cringe and weird

[–] regul@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago

permission to lib out for a second:

this changes the mnemonic you use to remember the names of the Great Lakes to SHAME

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

Should've named it Lake New York. Even his antics are sunsetting.

[–] StalinsGiantSpoon@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago

also, please fucking die.

Renaming Washington D.C. to Washington America because it's not a District of Columbia, it's a district of the United States.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

Washington America

TRUMMMP WASHTINGTON AMMERICA

Really glad Biden and the dems did nothing to curtail his abuse of Executive Orders. They even gave him a pre-emptive blanket pardon the entire family. But ya know maybe-later-honey NO KINGS (unlese we do sweeping nepo privilege above the law shit)

[–] adultswim_antifa@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago
[–] userse31@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

Should've renamed it the "Transbian Sea".

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

Things you do when you're a really great leader not running everything into the ground, even the bread and circuses, and you desperately need some small pointless victory to point to so you can pretend to have accomplished something other than just accelerating the collapse of your empire.

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

He should've called it Lake Amerikkka. Such a missed opportunity from JDPON Don.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Is this even binding outside of like google maps, I HIGHLY doubt the rest of the world will entertain wet boy on this.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Google maps is highly influential, and it’s the canon source for some. They did this with Gulf of “America” already

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Unreal that anyone even entertains him

[–] StalinsGiantSpoon@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

because if they don't he'll take away money or something.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

And you know dems (if they somehow win) will glady keep these because “we’re not petty like that.”

I hate chuds even more that they somehow think people who literally want to suck their dicks are somehow against them.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

If you don't satisfy the Emperor, he takes away your government contracts and licences. This leaves potential money on the table which makes major shareholder (also major Trump donors) unhappy and might force them enact the Golden Parachute insta lottery win on any dissenting CSuite board member.

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

Imagine caring

[–] evilleftistvampire@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

is there like, some "International Cartography Association" or whatever for massive nerds that believe they're in charge of maps? i want to see their posts about these antics low heap.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yes there kinda is, it's called OpenStreetMap forums and the response to this is boringly correct: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/lake-ontario-lake-america/146975 Basically they just added official_name:en_US=Lake America while keeping name=Lake Ontario and name:en=Lake Ontario. This means that it will not show up on any maps that use OpenStreetMap but will appear in searches if someone asks for it.

The shitstorm for Gulf of Mexico was more fun and resulted in "Gulf of Mexico" being renamed to "Golfo de México" on the map eventually: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/gulf-of-america-gulf-of-mexico/124571

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

"International Cartography Association" or whatever

Googling isn't any fun anymore so I didn't google that. I did check r/Cartography which has 25K subscribers. The result? No posts at all.
