even if 90% of reddit is bot content theyd still have more human content than here
You say that but there's a reason most people haven't moved to the fediverse. 1/3 the stuff is reddit reposts and another 1/3 is from RSS feeds. Every community with a subreddit counterpart has a fraction of the human activity.
Not dunking on the fediverse, I'm obviously happy here. But let's not oversell it....reddit may be mostly bots but they still have five times as many humans posting lol
Yes, Reddit has more users, but often, they don't act like humans. They don't contribute to discussions. Often, they karma farm.
On the other hand, Lemmy/Piefed feels like Reddit used to be. It might be small, but it feels human-led with no gamification incentives.
We have the same bot-like humans over here, too. Ragebait, memes, and twitter screenshots from 2018. Everything is just at a smaller scale.
Which to be clear, is totally fine to prefer. I just think it's a bit silly to claim there's more human content here when that couldn't be further from the truth
A nice and human scale userbase.
I did help mod a community on Reddit. Daily, so many reports it took a team of us to manage them. I was on there for about 15 years, it's not a recent problem.
I single handedly (so far) mod a community here. 2.5 years, two reports total. What a joy.

Lack of karma. It was a stupid idea that encouraged spam.
IIRC Digg had the equivalent before with the famous powerusers.
LOL Digg, havent thought about that dumpster fire in over a decade. Wow did they F up... Same w/ Fark, there would be no reddit if either site had some brains.

They tried making a modrrn reddit clone, dropped it one week into release and swapped to an ai feed thing
i thought digg died and came back as something entirely new with just the old name
IDK, like I said in my original post I haven't thought of them for a decade+ and took a look and its there. Not terribly impressive from what I saw.
There is a site called Digg, IIRC it’s only tangentially related to the original Digg though. I read a year or two ago that someone had bought the name and was making a new site that would function very differently from the original.
Here are a few:
- Allowing to hide karma visible to the user.
- Good content.
- The blocking system (Reddit's way of blocking is used to piss people off).
- Genuine debates (as far as that is possible).
- Not being immediately banned from the entire site when an AI decides you did something wrong (I can't back this up but I firmly believe Reddit uses AI to moderate their entire site).
If it's like I remember - you can choose to use rules & tools to mod on Reddit, you don't have to, but I am not exaggerating, there were hundreds of reports per day on the normalnudes one I helped with, and hundreds of guys a week who ignored the "no isolated erection shots" and had their posts removed, also so many women advertising, both of which were disallowed on that thread- I would not be surprised or annoyed if they got a tool to recognize those.
Also it was a don't offer critique unless it's asked for place, otherwise if you can't say something nice say nothing, so comments got legitimately reported all day too.
It's hard to imagine the scale of the bad actors on that site, it's a constant flood being held back.
they definitely use ai for moderation, the reaction is often instant, and the reaction is often a mistake even a dumb human mod wouldn’t make
I was permabanned from Reddit for making fun of AI in a lighthearted manner. They wouldn't reverse the decision after I complained. It was a dull response, too, like they didn't even try to look into it; instead, I broke a rule for "inciting violence" when nothing I said was even violent in nature. ¯\(ツ)/¯
10+ years gone and over 160k karma so it's not like I was a noob or troll. I moderated 4 or 5 subreddits myself too, and was a top contributor to many tech subs...
15 years gone for me. I was banned from a subreddit and they claimed I created another user name and tried to access subreddit. I only have one user name… wouldn’t over turn it

Only what's publicly visible. Not my location, not when I log in, not the devices I use. My comments, when they got posted, upvotes and DMs afaik.
Community made apps.
Piefed has the ability to move posts. You can move your post if you decide you made a mistake, or the mods can move a post they've decided is off-topic. A request for tech support could be moved from a conversation community to a support community where it belongs, without forcing the user to resubmit.
If you mess up and say something stupid, there's a button you can press that says "I changed my mind about this comment". The comment remains visible, but everyone sees a disclaimer that you no longer believe what you said, and they can't reply. No more replies telling you the same thing, and you don't look like a sneaky coward. Other people get to learn from your mistake.
You can follow microblogs from Piefed. I'm following George Takie, I can see his toots from My Piefed account.
You can set your pronouns and they'll appear next to your name on most communities. Species too, if you're otherkin.
There's a list of new communities and a separate list of active communities in the homepage sidebar. Communities are also organised into topics, so you can find new communities to join more easily.

Some Lemmy instances hide the down arrow and replace it with a stupid emoji.

It depends on what client you use as to whether it's shown but the data is there. On Jerboa, for example, there's a setting to show just the sum or split it.
Moderators who do not ban you if your opinion differs from theirs
A non bot comunity. I swaer reddit is just a bunch of bots and paid actors trying to convince eachother the ideals of whoever is paying them is correct.

Reddit as a company doesn't want anything the fediverse has because that would impact their cash flow.

So many people already listed so many things Reddit wishes they could have so i'm going to say what they wish they don't have, a corporate boot on their throats and a dumbass CEO.

Idk pretty sure it was the adults and boomers that made Facebook way worse. Same is happening to reddit. But of course the company executives are also the root cause. They all add up.
Kids and Teens online is such a wormy issue. They'll be everywhere, lying about their ages, lying about who they really are .etc They're just problematic little liars at every turn, fucking things up for the rest of us, because their parents are stupid and garbage at handling them.
We wouldn't have an issue with social media, with IDs, with chat room or even Discord servers if it weren't for them. Fuck them, they don't belong online. The internet should be for 18+ users. It's clearly evident that teenagers and children in general, cannot handle anything online. And the only reason they sortof can now, is because of the lengths the laws and egregious moderation that consists of the sanitization of online content have gone to 'protect' them.

Yes, people in general do dumb shit, i get that. I think younger ones are more prone to troll bc they didn't grow up when the internet was pure and untamed, so they don't respect it.
