Mangione said that he endured physical pain for years.

“I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” he continued.

“When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury,” he said. “I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

This is the most aggravating outcome. I am honestly extremely suspicious that this may just be his lawyers trying to get him the best feasible outcome in a context where the DoJ is not really following the rules.

They’re going for single digit prison time and trying to get the state case tossed under double jeopardy

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He'd better get a hell of a plea deal bargain out of this.

I'm fucking pissed that he's not even giving jury nullification a chance.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

No plea deal was made. The prosecution intends to seek the maximum penalty, life in prison.

This was done to avoid being charged for 2nd degree murder and various weapons related charges.

[–] someone@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

Single digit? How would that conceivably occur?

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I really wanted him to be found not guilty.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

We all know he's not guilty. The courts are only tangentially related to actual justice.

Count 1: Stalking

  • Travel in interstate commerce

Count 2: Stalking

  • Use of interstate facilities

Pleading guilty in federal stalking case.

Pleading not guilty to state charges for 2nd degree murder.

Government recommendation of 20-30 years in prison. Charges require a more than 0 years in prison with a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing to happen in December.

Lawyers filed to dismiss state charges under New York’s double jeopardy laws.

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 14 points 3 days ago

The government has submitted a letter to the judge recommending a sentence of 25 to 30 years.

Whatever factual admissions he made in the federal plea can usually be admitted as evidence in the state case. That could really blow up a case, but I assume that Mr. Mangione's excellent legal team has already figured out what consequences there are and briefed him on that.

The trade-off, I think, is now he can now seek a dismissal in the state case due to double Jeopardy rules

A more complete transcript..

After years of enduring severe pain from a broken back, navigating the obstacles of the health insurance system and witnessing similar experiences of countless others, I learned that United Healthcare would be holding its annual investor conference in New York City on December 4, 2024, although the specific location was not publicly disclosed. I learned that United Healthcare would be holding its annual investor conference in New York City on December 4, 2024, although the specific location was not publicly disclosed. I then researched the event online. I observed that the annual conference of America's largest health care organization with the stated mission to make health --excuse me -- with the stated mission to make the health system work better for everyone, would be attended by company executives, the board of directors, and hundreds of investors, not doctors, nurses, and patients. In November of 2024, I traveled from outside of New York State to Manhattan. I then emailed United Healthcare leadership posing as an investor at a firm managing over $50 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour. Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun, and I equipped the gun with the silencer and magazine. My travel to New York and email to United Healthcare was with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died. When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.

"Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour. " is quite a gem

This bums me out. I had hoped he would get a fair trial and be found not guilty. I do understand trying to get the best deal if he doesn't believe that would happen, though.

If the judge actually gives him 25 years and they can get state charges dismissed, that's an okay deal, but there's no guarantee of that. It wouldn't surprise me if the prosecutors request life, his attorneys ask for 25 years, and the judge decides on 40.

What is shocking to me about this situation is if they had gone to trial, even with possible overwhelming evidence, I think some jurors would have been likely to nullify the law and just say he was not guilty of all charges.

I smell an illegally coerced confession..

With how they've been treating hlm like he's Dahmer and Manson combined in front of the cameras, I shudder to think what they might have done to him when NOT observed by the public.

Even the most hale would struggle to hold firm against over a year and a half of torture and he had a fucked up back to begin with..

This is the least shocking outcome ever. Its worrying that this is so shocking to people here. Where the fuck are you people getting your news?
