Donald Trump has announced he will run for president in 2028 during a rambling speech to the Washington press corps.

Trump was speaking at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner when he appeared to make the announcement.

I won three times, now I’m gonna do it again,” he said, while putting on a cap that read “Trump 2028″.

“I’m gonna do it again. It should be easy.”

He went on to add that he won in 2020 but the election was rigged.

The 80-year-old was met with a smattering of applause, but even he did not seem excited by the moment.

Over the dead body of every patriot that stands for the Constitution, which reads in pertinent part:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice

-22nd Amendment

*Edit: Here's the video of his announcement:

He seem like he's just joking to you?

Don't forget that he is only president NOW because we are already ignoring the constitution. Don't act like breaking a different amendment is any different. We already lost our constitution and rule of law when we stopped enforcing them.

14th amendment - Section 3

"No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability."

He engaged in insurrection, Congress never voted to remove it, he is holding office NOW despite our constitution stating quite clearly he is ineligible.

Illegitimate president.

[–] DisasterTransport@startrek.website 41 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You can bullshit around the insurrection label, but the term limit is pretty cut and dry. Not going to stop them, but the ramp is how we got here.

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 15 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Is it though? I've already seen arguments like "It only means two CONSECUTIVE terms" and other such bs arguments.

The thing is, if no one enforces a law then you have no law. You can write a rule on a piece of paper, but if you don't follow it what does it actually mean?

Yeah, the Supreme Court finding that the President was exempt from that wording really shows you the hoops they are willing to jump through to take over the government.

I'm horrified but also morbidly curious to see what bullshit they'll be coming up with next to let Trump continue to rule.

I seriously doubt that Hunter Biden is even remotely interested

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 45 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

He's said he's not.

granted, he can't be worse than the asshole we currently have, but, like. that's a very, very low standard. Positively subterranean.

Highly subterranean, that bar is in actual hell

2016, Obama was president: Trump thinks that there were no problems with the elections.

2018, Trump was president: Trump doubts the legitimacy of the midterm elections

2020, Trump was president: Trump thinks that the elections were rigged.

2022, Biden was president: Trump has no complaints about the elections and calls it a "great night".

2024, Biden was president: Trump does not doubt the legitimacy of the elections.

2026, Trump is president: Trump thinks that the midterm elections are going to be rigged.

I think that I am starting to see a pattern forming.

[–] neoman4426@fedia.io 18 points 3 weeks ago

To be fairer to Pedonald than might be reasonable, he did question the 2016 results. Both before the election as a "if I lose it must have been rigged, because that would make me sad", and after as a "I totally won the popular vote too, and every single state, but those fake votes made it look like I didn't."

it’s a stark reminder that the constitution is not immutable. amendments are changes, and they may seem “hard to do” but with this regime and supreme court, they won’t stop until they pretend they did this legally. remember: nazis were legal.

Good Lord. If trump looked any more like roadkill, he'd have to fight to keep RFK Jr from trying to eat him. He looks like absolute dogshit. I didn't think it was possible for somebody to look worse than Steve Bannon, and to be fair it's really fucking close, but trump does manage to look like a slightly worse, bloated corpse here.

But he's also a shitty president and a shitty person. Fuck trump. I can't wait to open my bottle of bourbon when it happens.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 10 points 3 weeks ago

RFK: Oh look!, I need to remove his penis for later. ..... wait, where is the penis? I should be here somewhere!

Okay, in context this headline and, really, the entire article seem pretty batshit. Trump did not announce a re-election bid. He told a string of awful scripted jokes that concluded with his dumb hat.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/24/white-house-correspondents-dinner-trump-washington

The speech included a handful of scripted jokes, one at the expense of Robert F Kennedy Jr, his health secretary who he quipped had personally run over the cow that became the evening’s “very delicious beef tenderloin”. Kennedy has championed the health benefits of beef tallow and animal protein.

Trump also mocked the weight of Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor, and Jerry Nadler, the New York congressman, imagining the two wrestling over a piece of cheesecake. He ridiculed the appearance of his critics, including Bruce Springsteen who he said “looks like hell” and took aim at CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who had been honored earlier for her White House coverage, saying she does not smile enough. Trump said he “hated” Adam Schiff, a Democratic California senator, and one of his most prominent congressional critics, while mocking the size of his head and neck.

At one point, after a joke about term limits fell flat, Trump broke the fourth wall, asking the audience whether anyone understood “this whole freakin stupid speech that they wrote”.

Trump ended his remarks with a joke that landed awkwardly, declaring that he planned to run and win a fourth election – a reference both to his false claim he won the 2020 election and to his repeated suggestion that he could seek a third term, despite the constitution’s two-term limit.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 75 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (8 children)

It's always a "joke" until it isn't. This is textbook gas lighting, and its a documented tactic from him and abusers like him.

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I think the reason no one's reporting it is that it just isn't a story. Trump makes comments like this all the time. There's a difference between him making them and him actually announcing a re-election bid, which is the claim in the headline and article. Why would he even announce at the White House Correspondents Dinner while he's bombing on stage? It just makes no sense. This reporting is bad.

[–] YouTalkinToMe@lemmy.wtf 30 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

If you listen carefully, you will find he never jokes. Testing the waters at least.

A common excuse of abusers and gas lighters is that they "were only joking".

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't disagree with you.

But that has no bearing on whether this story is true. The claim is that he has "announced a re-election bid." He hasn't. And you know this -- your recent comments are about him cloaking his intent or desire in feigned humour. I don't disagree that he's doing that. But, he does not need to do that if he has actually announced a re-election bid.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

your recent comments are about him cloaking his intent or desire in feigned humour. I don’t disagree that he’s doing that. But, he does not need to do that if he has actually announced a re-election bid.

I think he (on a subconscious level) knows this would basically sign his death warrant if he officially did it cold turkey like you say would show it was real. That's probably why he did it like this: to ease his way into doing it.

To use a relevant metaphor: raping children right away doesn’t work. They're dry and scared. You gotta lube up first. This was him opening the lube bottle.

Can we finally skip to the part where we arrest him?!

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That part will never happen. No matter what - he's getting away with it. He's too old to face any real consequences.

What we need to ensure is that responsibility doesn't end with him. We need a new round of Nuremberg trials and his cronies and enablers need to be held to account.

No mercy. Those in the military who executed illegal orders should be court-martialed and executed.

If I could trust the system to actually enforce the Constitution, I'd say bring it on. The 22nd amendment never prohibits running when you're ineligible to be elected. I'd actually love to see him run, "win", and then have to watch his opponent get sworn in because he's not eligible.

IF I could actually trust that the Constitution would be enforced.

Distraction from the war (failure), which is largely a distraction from the Epstein files.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

This is my theory: 1. Trump will try to declare a national emergency at the end of September or early October in order to stop the midterms from happening due to the ongoing “conflict” with Iran or any other geopolitical situation that he has caused himself. 2. The midterms will still take place, although it will be heavily scrutinized by the right with the possibility of violence toward people on the left on election day. 3. The midterms will heavily favor the Democrats leading to a total wipeout for Republicans in all states as a result the Republicans will cry foul and that they were cheated, causing immediate January 6 style riots all over the country and possibly even the capital again. 4. Regardless of the results of the midterms, Trump will use their results too justify him running in 2028 and at the beginning of next year he will do everything in his power to get the Supreme Court and anybody else to stand behind his presidential run and next summer, he will immediately pivot into campaigning. 5. While I do believe it is over for Trump and the Republicans, there’s always that small what if. If he manages to stay alive until 2028 I have that saddening feeling that there is a very good possibility he could win again. I will happily eat my own words on all of this, after it’s just a theory…stay safe and informed everyone.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Cause he just did it, and its like midnight in the USA. Also, there's a distinct possibility that SOME news organizations are owned by the same people who support Project 2025 and/or were cheering when he said that.

Trump has concluded his speech after about an hour. Weijia Jiang, retaking the microphone, offers compliments to Kaitlan Collins and Josh Dawsey, two award winners that Trump mocked in his remarks.

That was posted two hours ago.
