I used Apollo, got the lifetime membership, about 6 or 8 months later it gets shut down
So say we all!
none of these say anything about moving due to privacy concerns and I feel like thats a huge market here.
Tbf, the fediverse isn't private at all and holds no pretense that it is. Yeah your instance isn't selling your data or doing the creepy profile-mapping that meta does, but it's important to be aware that this is very much a public forum
Column 1 straight down Team!
The 3rd party app-ocalypse made me create an account here but it was the reddit ads that eventually made me quit the Reddit app. At some point I realised more of my feed was taken up by autoplay video ads than actual content. The slow decline in intelligent conversations really accelerated after they killed the apps too.
So far I like it here, there's less content and that can be a bit disappointing but it's probably healthier that I can't scroll endlessly. It's also nice to feel like your posts don't get buried under a torrent of other content the moment you make them.
The API change and the general tone they took towards the community when they implemented it.
Thats technically the first box, when Reddit walled off their API to third party vendors all the good apps were killed... kinda. I'm still using Boost, they use to proxy for Reddit but now they implemented Lemmy for the past 4 years.
You don’t have one for “Longtime lurker who used reddit for their daily dose of catching-up-with-the-world but found that the r/all was increasingly showing reality tv discussion subs that they had no interest in”.
Yeah, they finally just killed r/all completely, which is why I'm here. I fucking hate how reddit became this corporate cesspool. It used to be just a regular cesspool with some content I liked.
I only ever accessed reddit from the mobile web, but I left and moved in solidarity because of the API shit. Told me it was somewhere I didn't want to be anymore.
RIP, Apollo.
RIP RIF
Long live Voyager
Too many unironically racist and sexist people in reddit.
There was one exchange I recently had with an obvious Israeli.
Guy just kept saying didn't understand and such any time I asked why European colonizers had any right to middle eastern land, without involving an imaginary sky man.
Then he/she shut up when I asked about the cultural genocide and infant stealing inflicted on the Mizrahi Jews, and the involuntary birth control given to Ethiopian Jews.
Fascism is an ever shrinking circle.
I was device and IP banned for saying Americans needed to have the Guillotines in the streets.
I stand by what I said lol.
Everything except getting b&
Based on the registration applications, I think getting banned is a lot less common than people think. Most people are checking out the fediverse because of other problems on reddit, whether its the ads, bots, monetization related changes, hateful content, privacy concerns, manipulation, trump related concerns, etc
We do get the occasional "I'm here because I got banned", but the vast majority is "I'm curious about what this place is like".
Now isn't hard evidence on its own, but I'd also bet that when the first category joins, they're often looking for a place to vent about their ban. When the second category joins, they rarely announce their newness.
Where's the, "I hate everything proprietary, and regularly check for foss alternatives option"?
Third party apps did it for me and most of us with accounts around 3 years old.
Bottom right, but I did get back on reddit. Their IP bans are clown shoes!
But then I started liking it here and found some subs that have decent interaction so I stayed...
Top row, left column for me. I've actually been around since the third party app ban, but lost my first two accounts: VLemmy -> lemm.ee -> lemmy.zip
Fuck ****.
I know I don't have to censor things on Lemmy, but I don't want to be rude anyway.
but.. like.. so — theoretically — what happens when someone looses miserably at bingo with a perfect score of 0/9? Asking for a friend.. of a friend..
Mine isn't there as an option, the internet was designed and built to be a free and open decentralised place. power, data, and control over the internet shouldnt be concentrated in a small number of corporations or governments. Instead, infrastructure, identity, content, and money should be spread across many independent nodes that no single entity controls. The fediverse is the return to what the internet always has been and always will be, just there was a small blip over the last decade or so where we lost our way.
What’s Spez?
The greedy little pigboy in charge, Steve Huffman.
Thanks! Actually non of the bingo things apply. I just like the fediverse.
Does wishing death on Elon Musk and Trump count as a good reason, or a 'good' reason?
Does this feel like lawful good to chaotic evil to anyone else?
And I swapped when they killed my favorite app.
Dang, plenty of marks but no bingo for me. I should have been banned before leaving
I know exactly why I was banned: I reported a few instances of disinformation in r/conservative, and the admins suspended my account for "abusing the moderation system".
Just to reiterate: the Reddit admins sided with the fascists to create a safe space for propaganda and lies, and kicked me off the site for attempting to report it.
X O O O X O O O X
But also FUCK SPEZ!
I used the Reddit is Fun app for like 15 years. The second they took that away I was gone.
Trump threatened greenland, had all the tech bros at his inauguration and one of them was high on ketamine and heiling, so I figured it was time to leave as many American social media platforms as possible.
The only one I still use is youtube and that's in a logged out state and in a browser.
Can't say I miss Facebook, Instagram and reddit. It's been over a year and I barely think about it nowadays.
I have my issues with Lemmy, but you can filter out most of the bs so at this point it's mostly memes, animal fotography and other wholesome stuff that's left in my feed. Life is good.
I still have RIF installed on principle. I'm still angry about that
Bottom left. I was curious.
Turns out I just found a second reddit, and it's occasionally good!
Top left for me. It was the clear sign I needed to see that Reddit was on the fast entshitification route.
I didn't get a bingo, but;
- Fuck Spez (obviously)
- Bots and AI (loathing both, even and especially the constant automoderator spam)
- try something new (and it's going well!)
Shouldnt the top middle be the free space?
None of these, really; I just wanted something open-source (I guess bottom-middle might qualify for that but I don't plan to run anything)..
