If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

Is this written by a sea bass?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

N... No? Why. πŸ‘‰πŸ‘ˆ

[–] 5715@feddit.org 6 points 5 days ago (3 children)

They don't have formal education. I'm not sure they can write. At least not English, that's for sure.

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 12 points 5 days ago

I think I've seen a few sea bass sing.

[–] sbeak@sopuli.xyz 6 points 5 days ago

The seabass were too strong for the British to colonise

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

That's a stigma based in slave owning colonial thinking you fish hater

[–] Daryl76679@lemmy.ml 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I will not stand for this fish propaganda! Filet them all!

Personally, I'm fine with it

Finally, the scales are tipping in the right direction. And while we're on the subject, can you go ahead and stop using "crappy" to imply any sort of negative connotation? Crappie are beautiful, vivacious, and gregarious fish who have fascinating behaviors and are important members of their native aquatic ecosystem. That they also taste delicious, well, maybe that's a different discussion for another time when we're not talking about how there's nothing crappy about crappies. If anything, it should be a tremendous compliment to have a crappy day or make a crappy meatloaf or watch a crappy movie.

the scales are tipping

Please refrain from using the word "scales", it's cultural appropriation of bony fish. Instead, use phrasing like the tables are turning

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

We're all bony fish on this blessed day.

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

Could you stop implying that tables like to turn? Tables take pride in being stationary load bearing fixtures.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

What do you call a fish without an eye?

Partially blind. And there is nothing funny about visual impairment.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

good life is all about the bass and no trouble

Destroy the planet through an industrial capitalist hellscape

[–] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 5 points 5 days ago

What color has the european seabass on the prideflag?

[–] Gwot@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Seabass? Yeah I've seen it

[–] colourlessidea@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago

The problem is that the proposed alternative changes the intent of the original, unless heavy sarcasm is implied but in that case I’d argue that it’s even more anti-fish than the original

I always do what my cichlid says.
