Party I was at was trumpers and this irony is delicious.

America playlist going most of night. They turned off hendrixs star spangled banner at woodstock. Little too experimental for em, little too on the nose.

Explaining to a 70 year old it was a protest song, hearing them just grumble under their breath is a new July 4th favorite memory for me. Like dude you were alive then how are you not aware.

After that it was ford truck month country.

Born down in a dead man's town The first kick I took was when I hit the ground End up like a dog that's been beat too much 'Til you spend half your life just to cover it up now

Born in the USA I was born in the USA I was born in the USA Born in the USA, now

Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hands Send me off to a foreign land To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the USA I was born in the USA Born in the USA I was born in the USA

Come back home to the refinery Hiring man said, "Son, if it was up to me" Went down to see my V.A. man He said, "Son, don't you understand, now?" Oh, yeah No, no No, no, no

I had a brother at Khe Sanh Fightin' off them Viet Cong They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon I got a picture of him in her arms now Down in the shadow of the penitentiary Out by the gas fires of the refinery I'm ten years burnin' down the road Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the USA I was born in the USA, oh Born in the USA I'm a long-gone daddy in the USA, now

Born in the USA Born in the USA Born in the USA I'm a cool rocking daddy in the USA, now

So many people just don't listen to lyrics, or actually take the time to understand them.

[–] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Play it fucking louder.

If it makes you feel better, german right-wingers love blasting "Deutschland" by Rammstein

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 13 points 2 days ago

I think there may be a correlation between shifting to the right/far right and reading/hearing comprehension.

At least give healthcare to veterans, especially mental healthcare. 7% of homeless people in the US are veterans.

[–] TheRtRevKaiser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

6% of the adult population of the US are veterans. All people deserve access to healthcare.

[–] frog@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I agree all people deserve access to healthcare.

With your stat of 6% I think my stat is almost pointless now since homelessness is almost the same for the nonveteran population. Is this correct?

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's largely regional, so to be honest the statistic is more valid when looking at things from a local level rather than a national level.

West Virginia would be in a much worse state for their populace compared to Washington state, for instance.

(Especially since W. Virginia has a much higher percentage of veterans and general poverty rates. Serving in the military is sometimes seen as an employer of last resort.)

[–] DMCMNFIBFFF@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did these vets vote for Trump?

Serving in the military is sometimes seen as an employer of last resort.

I suppose it might be more comparable to welfare: the government gives them money even though these recipients produce little or no productive work.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Again, depends on region. Given prior electoral results from 2016 and 2024 though, I think it's fair to say more veterans from W. Virginia voted for Trump than veterans from Washington state.

I don't think it's honest to compare military service to welfare though - the occupational hazards aside, you sign away most of your freedom of movement and independence while in active duty (whereas welfare is designed to assist people who are struggling in the active moment rather than having them sign away their autonomy for years or even decades).

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

and 40+million people are uninsured. most of the military budget goes to defense contractors so im not surprised.

[–] frog@feddit.uk 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I remember seeing a segment on the news that said the heads of the military said they have enough crap but the politicians keep giving them more money to buy more crap. Why? Because the corrupt politicians are bribed by the weapon manufacturers.

Frustrating...

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

because people like shcumer, hakeem, slotkin is getting money from aipac(which is really tax money) to fund israels campaigns, indirectl or directly. and many universities is a pipeline for weapons/tech development for israel too. the GOP takes money too from them. also defense contractors are likely lobbying these gop/dems to continue a war.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago

The VA is supposed to, but like Medicare/Medicaid, is hampered in its ability to be distributed to all those who need it.

There's a reason "not service related" has become an in-joke among active/former servicemembers, sadly.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Great song.

But also "I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the USA" is one of the most cringe dad rock lyrics ever.

Look, Bruce, I love you. I respect you, you know this. But calling yourself "a cool rocking Daddy in the USA" is just so cringe. It's like giving yourself a nickname.

[–] DMCMNFIBFFF@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It might be a POV in the song.

others:

"They call me the breeze."

"Some people call me the space cowboy .... gangster of love ..."

To be fair veterans are among the most deserving of horrible treatment.

[–] DMCMNFIBFFF@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

They engaged in mass murder; most knew/know post-Vietnam War history (or should know it before joining); and many voted for Trump, and/or Dubya Bush.
