At least give healthcare to veterans, especially mental healthcare. 7% of homeless people in the US are veterans.

[–] TheRtRevKaiser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

6% of the adult population of the US are veterans. All people deserve access to healthcare.

[–] frog@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I agree all people deserve access to healthcare.

With your stat of 6% I think my stat is almost pointless now since homelessness is almost the same for the nonveteran population. Is this correct?

It's largely regional, so to be honest the statistic is more valid when looking at things from a local level rather than a national level.

West Virginia would be in a much worse state for their populace compared to Washington state, for instance.

(Especially since W. Virginia has a much higher percentage of veterans and general poverty rates. Serving in the military is sometimes seen as an employer of last resort.)

Did these vets vote for Trump?

Serving in the military is sometimes seen as an employer of last resort.

I suppose it might be more comparable to welfare: the government gives them money even though these recipients produce little or no productive work.

Again, depends on region. Given prior electoral results from 2016 and 2024 though, I think it's fair to say more veterans from W. Virginia voted for Trump than veterans from Washington state.

I don't think it's honest to compare military service to welfare though - the occupational hazards aside, you sign away most of your freedom of movement and independence while in active duty (whereas welfare is designed to assist people who are struggling in the active moment rather than having them sign away their autonomy for years or even decades).

The VA is supposed to, but like Medicare/Medicaid, is hampered in its ability to be distributed to all those who need it.

There's a reason "not service related" has become an in-joke among active/former servicemembers, sadly.

and 40+million people are uninsured. most of the military budget goes to defense contractors so im not surprised.

[–] frog@feddit.uk 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I remember seeing a segment on the news that said the heads of the military said they have enough crap but the politicians keep giving them more money to buy more crap. Why? Because the corrupt politicians are bribed by the weapon manufacturers.

Frustrating...

because people like shcumer, hakeem, slotkin is getting money from aipac(which is really tax money) to fund israels campaigns, indirectl or directly. and many universities is a pipeline for weapons/tech development for israel too. the GOP takes money too from them. also defense contractors are likely lobbying these gop/dems to continue a war.
