Never underestimate the stupidity of management...

I wasn't doing anything wrong, but I worked my ass off and took on projects no one else in my company could. They let me go anyways. I found out through people remaining that they had a couple really big contracts come up after that that they really wanted to take but my old manager(who argued against letting me go) told them there was no way they could take them because I was the only one that could've handled them. Few salves are as comforting as the schadenfreude of watching your old company fail in a way you could've prevented had they not fired you. Was a literal lynch pin and they pulled me.

Meh. Everyone needs to optimize for their tolerance to bullshit. It's a lot of bullshit to use leverage, or find another job, especially when employment is merely a means to an end.

Yep. It took a little while, but after seeing “leadership” make dumb decision after dumb decision just because it helps them win their turf war with another department or aligns with their personal politics, I stopped caring. I do enough work that if I got hit by a bus, things would fall off the rails. I don’t think anyone above me realizes that. But I rest safe in the knowledge that if I do get fired someday for some bullshit reason, I’ll have the last laugh.

What are you, the punctuality police?

If you are not replaceable because you do a ton of tasks other people can’t do, especially if you’re salaried, then it seems pretty fair to make your own time for things.

There are definitely other corners you shouldn’t cut when in that type of position, but being allowed to manage your own time is not one of them.

Managing your time is one thing. Doing the job of multiple people is foolish and should get a raise. If you are mission critical, get paid for it.

If you're that mission critical, you'll get the raise and still won't have any dramas about punctuality.

But working less is the same as being paid more per hour, and I'd much rather work less than have a bit more money? Finding a job that is nominally 30 hours/week while paying as much as my current one would be quite hard.

Nah, I was working 3 weeks without a free day abroad, but that didn't count for my time back, so I still needed to sit in the office, although I needed some rest and there wasn't much to do for me in this week

My direct boss said, that I'm often coming in late, but I'm always here when needed, doesn't matter what
And he said this as a positive thing

It really depends on the job though

My team had smaller workload when it had triple the current staff. If they fire me, they will not meet any quota, so I can do bad work.

With AI, this assumption is proving false day by day. Critical resources have been let go by my employer in the hope of matching their contributions with junior/fresh engineers + AI. I have heard similar stories from friends too.

However, I am yet to hear a real life instance of a company walking back and rehiring - something that I keep reading in news.

Survivorship bias i suspect, the company needs to fuck up big enough for it to be worth noting, survive that fuck-up and then admit enough wrongdoing (fiscally, if nothing else) to be able to be in the situation where a story like that would come out.

I think we'll hear more over time, but as a thing that happened in the past.

Some companies might not survive to rehire, some might only just survive and rehiring isn't on the cards.

Some might limp forwards and work through without rehires.

No. They actually have an interview round where the candidate is given access to a coding agent and a problem to solve.

Interesting. We laid off all of our junior engineers, and only kept senior people who are now expected to use AI for junior engineer tasks, then review it all and fix it all. Would be easier for me to just write it all myself rather than babysit some AI and argue with it when it fucks up.

When I was in college I worked at FedEx, and I'd leave early all the time to get to get extra studying done or spend more time in the lab. I knew they'd never get rid of me because there were already so few people who wanted to work at 2 in the morning in the middle of nowhere, and I was one of only a few who could actually handle 3 trucks without a bunch of missed packages and misloads.
