Except if you are autistic, and never quit your special interests :)

[–] MrChewy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Unless you were never allowed to know you're autistic and the idea of it is still rejected :(

You better believe if I had the money that I would absolutely buy a bunch of marbles and this thing that was a bunch of plastic pieces you'd connect together just so you could send your marbles down the track.

Still have yet to drop the cartoon/animation watching hobby, so kid me would absolutely be proud. Though I'm sure kid me would absolutely be confused about the whole dressing up as cartoon animal ( wearing a fursuit head ) thing, but at least my teen self ( 15 up ) would die of jealousy over it.

Marble racing is one of the things that got me through COVID.

Have you ever seen Jelle's Marble Races on YouTube? The sand tracks are literally what I did as a kid.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 1 points 23 hours ago

For some reason those marble racing videos don't hit that itch for me the same way the plastic marble run things or watching a super well built track in this Marble World game play out does.

[–] seriousslayerguy@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Plastic pieces that you connect is called LEGO.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

It wasn't lego, which I also had. It was something like this marble run thing I saw when I looked it up.

Here's a picture of a more modern looking version of what I had. Hope it loads properly:

Time to eat dirt again then

[–] IMALlama@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

This is an actual thing. It even has a fancy name. Geophagia is nearly universal around the world in tribal and traditional rural societies.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Add seeds. Now you garden.

I never really stopped touching myself. Best hobby ever.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good ol wankin, nothing beats that

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Beats? Aaaahhhh, I see what you did there.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

Video games, drawing/art, photography, having cats as pets, and wearing almost exclusively unisex clothing.

Yep. 12 year old me would have been quite happy to see me now.

[–] JohnWorks@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 days ago

Probably less that young me knew something and more that current me has money for those hobbies

I rediscovered being creative in my 30s. I started doing improv and stand up. Cracking jokes with your friends is always fun.

I tried to learn how to make video games when I was 12. I recently restarted learning how to do that in my 30s.

I started reading again. I have better taste in books now than I did when I was a kid, but some of the books I read as a kid were bangers.

I started playing basketball again. I used to play basketball everyday from age 12 to age 25. It hurts a lot more but it is so good for my soul.

When I was a kid, I loved Ben 10 and I had a toy drum kit that I didn't know how to play.

Now I'm doing a complete watch-through of Ben 10 and I can play the theme on My drums.

I was really interested in ttrpgs and wargmaming as a kid. My family was poor as hell, though, so buying $40+ books and $300+ Warhammer starter sets wasn't a priority. I would try to create my own but were all proper shit. I at least had fun with process.

I discovered some used Call of Cthulhu books in an antique mall in my mid 20s and realized that I could buy all the stuff I never could get as a kid. I'm 42 now and have two full bookcases of RPGs and a whole pile of grey plastic collecting dust.

This is me with foam dart blasters right now. Not buying nerf because Hasbro sucks, but the market has expanded greatly to other better brands since I was a kid and access to 3D printing has blown retail stuff out of the water.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Even 3rd party stock is scary good these days. Very much not a toy for kids anymore

[–] Dettweiler42@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

RC cars are really cool now. Also, slot cars on non-ferrous tracks.

[–] Seppo@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Nope. You'll just create more Disney/Pokemon adult. We don't need that.

[–] therewolftherecastle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Seriously. Imagine having a sincere interest in anything. Cringe, amirite?

[–] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 days ago

my rediscovered interests were worldbuilding and ttrpg's, i think Disney and pokeman adults never lose that 'spark' and so don't need to rediscover.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Disagree. I went back to some old hobbies when I quit drinking. Reading comic books being one of them. I don’t buy superhero merch. Heck, I don’t even buy the books. I read through my library/ the Hoopla app. I barely even talk about it much. I just enjoy the stories and maybe discuss online sometimes. 🤷‍♂️

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Have you read Warren Ellis' run of Moon Knight from 2014?

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 1 day ago

I like the part where he protects the travellers of the night

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I’m a bit surprised you aren’t catching some downvotes for that comment. I would bet a decent amount of millennials here are adult Pokemon fans.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 0 points 2 days ago

Only boring kids are obsessed with Disney and Pokemon. Cool kids like space and superheroes.

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish I remember what young me used to do. What he used to wish he had the money to do. All that sort of stuff.

Because now pretty much all I do is work, scroll Reddit, and watch Youtube.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How’s Reddit these days?

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

The same horribly addictive cesspool it always was, really.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Revisiting my old hobbies and - by turns - finding out some of this stuff was dumb shit for babies and some of this stuff was absolutely fucking impossible how did I ever get it to work at all when I was twelve?!
