Rest easy to a true patriot

I don't think Harambe knew what the US was, nor did he care.

[–] fox@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago

He was pretty anti-USA actually, as any self-respecting guerilla

Fellow kids type shit

They wish they could go back to 2016's energy so bad.

when you draw your last breath and then when the US empire comes to defile you?

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

First when you die, then when your meme dies because you get appropriated by nazis

While technically true that they were 'private employees', the Cincinnati Zoo receives millions per year from the state to hire and train the hitmen that killed him

[–] AFineWayToDie@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I thought the Harambe meme was funny until I learned that it was largely an excuse to demean the black family whose "fault" it was for his death.

[–] MLRL_Commie@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, not to doxx myself too much but I am close with someone who lived in Cincinnati when it happened, and he was very in tune with African American concerns there (it was huge at that time in Cincinnati, I hear) and this was the only aspect I heard about, so the meme was immediately super sour to me

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

The memes seemed to be spread and the name mentioned entirely by young white xbox gamer type bros in my experience, so I wasn't sure but definitely felt like it was primarily a racist thing.

Wait, the child involved in the Harambe affair was Black?

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What you think they'd run a 15 year long dehumanising campaign on a white child?

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago

They would due to a "Darwin award" angle, but the kid being Black gives extra fuel for the fire, definitely

may 28th? the harambe thing happened earlier in the year than that right? sanae-boomer

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was gunna say, only ten years ago? I thought it was like a 2000s meme

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

I mean my perception is skewed because I was in high school when Harambe was murdered, end of the year, barely got any mileage off the meme because it was right at the end of the school year.

Lower class men carried the meme into the next school year, but I was a senior and saw that the meme was played out by that point

Why are there so many hexbear posts marked NSFW when it's completely unnecessary. Some odd rule?

[–] Spectrism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Well... there's a naked gorilla in the image. The prudes might get upset.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

It's just used as a joke to obscure what the post is about, since the preview image is hidden for NSFW posts.
