Windows phone was great, what killed it was Microsoft's clueless management.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yeah i was hype about it until MS basically big timed everyone and was like "everyone will switch when they see how good the OS is, and then people will HAVE to make apps for it"

all while charging a fee

Requiring everyone on WP7 to buy a new phone for WP8 didnt help their case

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago

great operating system, terrible roll out, horrible delusional pricing schedule

Then like what, 70% of the WP8 phones weren't compatible with WP10 yet again

My Lumia 950XL remains my favourite phone I've ever owned. Live Tiles were amazing. I just unlocked my phone and had a dashboard constantly providing new information as opposed to a little dot in the corner of an icon indicating activity.

If not for the app gap and discontinuation of the OS, I'd still be happily using it.

I used all three back in 2012 for a job.

Windows phone had the worst phone hardware, but windows 8 phone OS was a decade ahead of Android and iOS.

What made it "a decade ahead"?

I've never seen one in action.

I don't know if it was a decade ahead, but it was really nice. Well thought out UI, really nice and fluid even on not the best hardware, the address-book integration with messaging and throughout the OS was really nice for its time, and some of the phones were actually pretty good (my Nokia had a great camera compared to most.)

Most important for me, at the time it had by far the best dual-SIM support - with active/active radios and proper management of things like separate default SIM for messaging/calls/data at a time when most Android phones with dual SIM were pretty awful, and nearly a decade before Apple would offer dual SIM at all.

I was genuinely sorry to let my last Windows Phone go.

I'm more sad about the Palm Pre failing. A microsoft OS being good long term never has been in the cards, it's just a coincidence the platform died before enshittification..

I still have mine, it's a decent audiobook player for the kids, it even has a jack, a replaceable battery, induction charging and is so nimble. And did I mention the full keyboard? I hate that we followed Apple design ideals, for the sake of having today overpowered dumb, heavy , fragile and inconvenient consumption-only bricks.

I still miss WP daily. It was a fantastic OS. Way ahead of its time, too.

Competition is good. However I’d never run it.

I have a working Nokia Lumia 1520 for sale. Games loaded and everything. Message me.

I had no idea about 8marketplace. Thanks for sharing! Last time I booted up a Lumia, basically everything was inaccessible because of the dead store. I was a big fan of windows phone back in the day. I would love to go back to WP7 or 8 as a main phone if possible.
