Ah, Liz Truss, an awful, awful prime minister, who was a Thatcher wannabe (which shows how bad her motivations were), racist, stupid, crashed the economy, blamed the chancellor she talked into doing it, sacking him for implementing her plan rather than for the tax avoidance he should have been sacked for, weak but talked tough. I was thinking she was the worst prime minister we'd had in a while, but the Conservative Party really has done a number on the country with the awful prime ministers it has foist upon us.

The country elected "stability and prosperity" with David Cameron instead of "chaos with Ed Milliband" and we got the Brexit referendum, endless turmoil, economic calamity, and frankly Ed Milliband would have been a far better prime minister than anyone we've had since.

Next, having promised to see the result of the referendum through either was, Cameron promptly resigned, leaving us with Teresa May, and whilst she had a sense of duty and fairness, she considered it her duty to try to find a compromise position between remainers and brexiteers, but the brexiteers wanted nothing and chaos and disruption and no compromise, and trying to satisfy them by moving in their direction was not just a fool's errand, it was an idiot's cause. She also thought that it was fair to write "immigrants go home" on the side of vans to drive through London, so her sense of duty and fairness didn't get us anything good.

After that we got Boris "moral compasses are for weak people" Johnson. It's not so much that he was a liar, it's that truth or falsehood were completely irrelevant to him. He partied while banning parties and while the Queen mourned in isolation 2 metres from her family, and that did for him in the end.

Then we had useless car crash Liz Truss, and finally Rishi "tech bro" Sunak, who wasn't all that great either.

Unfortunately they've now got Kemi Badenoch, who is as stupid as Truss, but is allowed to be more racist because she's from an ethnic minority, and of course she's allowed to be misogynistic because she's a woman, but actually all the racists and misogynists have deserted the Conservatives for the Nigel Farage Shit Show because she's a black woman and he's a white man. When will they ever learn?

Unfortunately, Labour have Keir "personality free zone" Starmer as prime minister, and whilst they've done some good stuff for workers rights and tenants, they've done it painfully slowly and are being beastly to the immigrants, so no one likes them much any more.

If they could replace him with someone with a bit of likeable personality and the common touch, who would actually make things better for ordinary people, build a vast amount of good-looking council housing, increase minimum wage, tax billionaires and multinationals, train, recruit and retain more doctors and nurses, bring social care under the nhs and fund it properly, invest in renewables to bring energy prices down, nationalise water again (leaving the debt firmly on the profiteering shareholders door - you leave with nothing, you vultures), then people can start to feel a bit more positive, and nobody needs to be deported for having the wrong colour skin.

Well, well, well - somebody actually found an actual quality of Liz "Lettuce" Truss: Memability.

I'm very proud to say that my first visit to the UK ever was during the turmulent Truss tenure. It was phenomenal, you folks know how to handle incompetence. I never thought I'd see a head of lettuce destroy a head of state, but the Brits know what they're doing.

PI? Private Investigator or π? Or both?

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)
[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

I've also heard principal investigator, but it's all the same. I think I've talked with mine once since I defended. I think that's for the best.

That usually means Physical Instructor and the meme made a lot of sense to me.

Left is me during the job interview, Right is me the moment onboarding ends.

PIs are trained on science that is likely outdated by the time they become professors, rewarded to churn out as many grants as possible, and never given a day of managerial training. Switching to industry after my PhD was a breath of fresh air.

My PI taught me I don't want a career in academia. Fuck that. Now I'm a capitalist slave :(

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

i heard it in other forums its pretty bad, you still a capitalist slave, but you do way too much. and getting a faculty position is pretty much difficult asf. almost every PROFESSOR i was in college with are all PISSY, strung out from stress having to deal with thier own lab, GRANT WRITING, teaching a class, ADVISING(which is the part they should not be doing)

[–] musicalphysics@discuss.online 2 points 12 hours ago

Universities are constantly threatening and exploiting faculty. There are thousands of applications for every faculty position so admin believes there is no reason to act with decency.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If it's any consolation, neoliberalism has thoroughly fucked academia as well.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago

theres other problems besides politics, like faculty positions are very hard to get if a PHD wants one. and then theres the issue with the amount of stress to become a researcher at these universities, and your CV.

You guys have Personal Investigators?

[–] fascicle@leminal.space 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I thought it was a pubic infection

[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

primary/ principal investigator

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Still don't know what that is.

[–] e0qdk@reddthat.com 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Generally the professor in charge of the research group.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

The PI is usually a PHD with years of experience in charge of a lab, their job is to conduct research and answer questions. They'll bring on post docs and PHD/MSC students to conduct that research, write papers and progress thesis projects. Source: got my MSC in nutrition a few years back then spent a portion of my career in a pathology service core for the local research community so I've seen a lot of different projects over the years (spicifically biology/histopathology).
