Ch... China doesn't have an advanced economy? I refuse to look up what the criteria are.

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 32 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

As the world’s second largest economy, they are an emerging market. This should naturally explain why the world’s 3rd largest economy, which is a bit above 1/4 of China’s, is blue.

[–] Self_Sealing_Stem_Bolt@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Second largest? They produce everything. Its so funny that that statement is its own "always the same map" thing. Most of amerikas economy is fictitious capital and they produce little more than suffering but claim to be the biggest economy lmao.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"economy" doesn't mean products or production or industrial capacity or consumption or living standards

"economy" just means money, just the number of money that is dancing around stonks-up

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

They’re on the path to first, but fictitious capital is still keeping the US GDP higher, so far.

And yet Taiwan is coloured in on it.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

taiwan has two giant companies that are keeping the whole economy afloat somehow

the economy absolutely does not trickle down though, average salaries are ridiculously low, no one can afford to buy a house, small businesses are closing every day

it's going to be very funny (and also even more tragic for normal people) once the llm bubble pops and the chip prices plummet and the whole inflatable bouncy castle flaccidly flops over

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Now that I think of it, we don't get any cultural import from Taiwan in the west, unlike we do with Japan and Bad Korea. They must truly be miserable if we don't get any media coverage whatsoever in the style of "how wonderful life in Taiwan is in comparison with horrific Gyna"

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Taiwanese cultural exports all go to mainland China

Music dominates there because there's too much bureaucracy with censorship and filtering from the CPC for mainlanders to compete

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Jay Zhou and Mayday sell out arenas in the mainland like no mainland artist does

[–] volcel_olive_oil@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

usa: "he's just like me fr" [advanced economy stamp]

Famous for its advanced economy, uh, *checks notes* Greece

Y'know, the poor bastards who have been stuck in an austerity death spiral on account of the German-led EU just fucking decimating their ability to import anything

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago

I love capitalism, so cool!

[–] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 41 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

(Skipping excluding China since its easy.)

Greece, a country that had a total economic collapse to the point it was a joke for several years, and was degraded to an "emerging market", is advanced.

India, Russia, Brasil, Mexico, Turkey, all of which have developed industries with "healthy" agricultural, service, and "white collar" industries and aren't literal financial jokes, not advanced.

Also, lol at all the baltics being "advanced". Any economy they have is thanks to the USSR, and they and the west will never forgive them for it. I think the only thing I've ever seen "Made in" any of them was some winter hat from Estonia. I know I've seen some Polish stuff before. Nigeria once or twice. South Africa too.

Also also, I'm assuming the blue Carribean + African coastal dots are French overseas islands right? A tourism based economy propped up so your colonial overlords can maintain 1/100th of the prestige they had 200 years ago is peak economy.

Also also also, holy shit looking more and more at this map in maddening. Singapore, the fash little state where you can't chew gum but can commit extreme financial crimes, is advanced. Hong Kong and Macau and Taiwan are advanced (but not China). How the fuck is Canada advanced. Maple syrup and bad pseudo-American culture is not advanced. Same goes for Australia and New Zealand. Sorry "mates", emus and Peter Jackson films aren't the bread and butter of a thriving economic system. And why isn't Greenland included in Denmark if all the French shits are...

None of the gulf states are advanced. Maybe even libs know oil money is going to dry up in the next century. Or maybe its racism. Or is it a lack of "liberal democracy"? Their buddies in Ukraine are also excluded for reasons??? How is israel "advanced" but the Putin epic owners not???

Overall: Didn't know "'Service' based economy with a dying welfare state" and/or "stagnant industrial/agricultural nation" was peak economy. Guess I should have gone to economy 101.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 30 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Sorry but something being made in a country is a sign of a basic economy. Advanced economies don't make stuff.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Advanced economies do sports gambling, crypto rugpulls and AI chat bots.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago

advanced economies only make apps. this is why sweden, finland and the baltics are blue, they make computer games and spotifys and such (this employs like 100 people total and makes a lot of money for one guy in a fedora)

economy!

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

Same as how direct laborers are seen as menial/low-skill while the owners and middle-managers make the most money for “managing” the work

[–] MrPiss@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

A lot of the white supremacy maps like this one are just gdp per capita plus human development index plus vibes. Unless they state explicitly what the map is you can't learn anything from it unless you try deciphering their brainworms.

I thought this was the list of countries that refuse to feed the world even though they can.

[–] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait French Guiana is an advanced economy?

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Colonized by the French, so they get an honorable mention.

The one that still has me stumped is Greenland isn’t colored in, but Denmark is?

[–] Lurkmore@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Besides forgetting it exists, Greenland is mostly a native populace as opposed to the "approved" European.

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

I suppose it does have Mayotte beat on that metric.

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It was a good comment IMO and I think the high native population is a major factor, sorry if my reply led you to delete it - that wasn’t my intent doggirl-gloom

French overseas territories are officially France, Greenland is not officially Denmark. You can differentiate Greenland from Denmark and you will hear no one complaining (Well, nobody worth listening to).

What goes where is bullshit, but Greenland being their own thing is not.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Greenland is just a big, poorly run, piece of ice

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The advanced economy of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria actually produced computers in 1980s!

Extremely funny to see Baltics as advanced economies, while Poland is not.

This map has Greece and the Baltics as advanced but can we get an F in the chat for Poland? poland-cool

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I love the silly callouts like “Well, Mayotte and French Guiana have both been colonized, so let’s color them in!”
