Goddamn. They produce tetrodotoxin in their skin glands. That's the same neurotoxin as puffer fish.
Puffer fish don't produce it but they eat animals that do and store it for themselves
If so, we gave puffer fish a cute name.

That yellow color probably scares birds away. All of the local predators are descendants of individuals who just happened to be scared of that color for some reason, and they were the only ones who didn’t eat the poison.
Something tells me that this photo caused r34 but I cannot bring myself to look it up. I'll live in blissful ignorance until I encounter it in the wild.
