Almost anywhere in Europe or the Commonwealth would be good if you value liberties.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The real question are what countries are not heading the same direction as russia.

[–] catdog@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 day ago

Last year, many things I once doubted would happen, happened in the USA.

[–] dreksob@feddit.online -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You got the real question, and then gave a fake answer?

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 17 hours ago

It is not fake, it just doesn't fit the propaganda you've heard.

[–] timestatic@feddit.org 11 points 1 day ago

Honestly I think going through Georgia and applying for a visa/asylum in any EU country that somewhat permits it. Once you have permanent residence I believe you can just travel and move freely. Its not easy as many countries have locked down visas for russian nationals. But more so the more the countries closer to Russia.

[–] stepan@lemmy.cafe 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

not really related to the question, but wtf is that image? also isn't telegram russian?

[–] RickAstleyfounddead@lemy.lol 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Telegram and durov was expelled and banned from russia, now he lives in dubai.
He made Vk too and its sold to russian

[–] stepan@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

TIL.

lot of people say it's a russian spyware, which doesn't make much sense then..

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 2 points 20 hours ago

The security is dubious, and Durov is not exactly an exile: he travels to Russia regularly, and Telegram have had (and might still have) development offices there, suggesting some kind of accommodation with the authorities there.

[–] einkorn@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

It's still spyware though. Content is non-encrypted by default and in case of channels can't be encrypted anyway.

[–] Willoughby@piefed.world 5 points 1 day ago

Guess it's UAE spyware now.

Pssssst.

no one "owns" XMPP.

[–] webkitten@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

I believe the founder was originally Russian but moved to BVI and UAE since the 90s.

Alaska USA has a significant Russian population. Also I doubt ICE is trying to deport people from Alaska because it’s massive, empty, and makes money

lol yup, this one again. I read the title and knew exactly which user posted it. Answer in a snarky way, she gets upset and insulted. Try to be friendly, she tells you she doesn't want friends or help.

Like I said last time, I sympathize with her awful situation. But whining and then yelling at people on lemmy isn't really productive or helpful. She seems to use her account as a means to vent in general. And thats fine and understandable. But it would be nice if russians would find a way to do that amongst themself or directed at the people responsible for their predicament.

But alas, its easier to yell at westerners.

[–] GreenBeanMachine@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I confirm that was exactly my experience interacting with the OP.

[–] alina@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

lmao weren't you the one downvoting all my comments from different accounts?

It's funny that all these people who accuse me of something end up being weird as shit.

[–] alina@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

you literally said "I'd be happy to help, but I honestly don't care😮‍💨" and you got the answer you deserved. and I don't yell at westerners, I worship them, but not all of them.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social -4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I said I'd be happy to help you, the individual, if I could, but I cant. And I don't care that I can't. Reason being, what russia is doing to Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Once Ukraine is secured and alright, I'll see if I have any fucks left to give to russians.

[–] alina@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

-I can't help you and I don't care

-I don't need your help

  • She said she doesn't need my help, what a whiner🙄
[–] emotional_soup_88@programming.dev 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you're up for giving more than a fair share of your life to work, Canada, Japan or Germany. Mind you, Japan accepts like 1 refugee per year, so the manner of your migration might also affect where you want to try your luck.

If you want more balance between work life and private life, maybe a Scandinavian country.

I can only speak from experience regarding Japan and Sweden, where I have lived for many years. Regarding the other countries, I only speak from prejudice/image.

до свидания 😊 (I can read some Cyrillic and I know basically "hi, my name is..." so don't get your hopes up 😅)

[–] einkorn@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Germany

Russians migrating to Germany because of repressions in their country are in for a rude surprise though: Russia Germans our largest Russian-speaking group of citizens, make up a significant part of AFD voters, our new fascist party supported by ... Russia.

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

bullshit on the AFD support by russia. It's backed by Musk and other yankees.

[–] webp@mander.xyz 2 points 17 hours ago

You're almost there, keep going.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Shared interests. Weak EU is good for non-EU blocks.

Plus, even the fascists are not homogeneous, with some of them actually believing in patriotism, and others selling out to the highest bidder (like China)

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Source on russia having ties to the AfD then??

We know Musk loves to support far-right parties all over the world and has openly supported the AfD so it's not much of a stretch to say that he also financially supports them, but what is there wrt Russia other than "zomg the russians are eveel and hate our '''superior''' society because of how much better we are than them"

[–] RickAstleyfounddead@lemy.lol 5 points 1 day ago

I would say canada or Scandinavian places rich and similar climate

[–] webkitten@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Depends on your financial system; are you looking to move to a bordering baltic country? An EU country? Elsewhere? Is Language barrier an issue?

Estonia, Georgia, Armenia; close options.
Scandinavia, further but generally stable. Ireland, Iceland; farther out there.

[–] timestatic@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

I don't think getting into Estonia legally as a Russian with visa is easy

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

Depending on your langue skills I would recommend either Moldavia or Japan.

I don't know if having Shitter, Spotify, Instagram and WhatsApp is something to be proud of.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

США, конечно. У нас в Сеаттл много русских, часто русский слышано на улицах. Приезжай к нам — будет лучше здесь через несколько лет, уверен.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, there are Russians here, but "you commonly hear Russian on the streets" is nonsense. Quit your bullshit.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

You’re clearly not listening. It’s a rare day I don’t overhear someone speaking Russian.

edit: to clarify, I'm not sure if you just hang out in neighborhoods with a smaller group of Russian speakers, or if you have a different sense of what часто means than I do, but I can tell you I would have struggled with homesickness a lot less if I had heard English spoken in Nizhni as often as I hear Russian spoken in Seattle.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Clearly, you are choosing very specific places to frequent.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah? I'm a Russian speaker in Seattle, it might just be possible that I'm more frequently in Russian-speaking places in Seattle? And "often overheard" is not a high bar to clear -- if you take the bus to lunch and back again, you'll hear dozens of conversations; even if only a very small portion of them are in Russian, you'll still hear one most days.
