I keep hearing a little squeaking sound and I choose to believe it's a wee little mouse who's hiding out in my home.

If there's one, there are a whole lot more, and in a year, it will be a serious problem. Been there. Do not sleep on this.

Get a cat. Problem solved.

Old school mousetraps are honestly more effective than most cats. Other than having to clean up on your own. Theres a reason the phrase “build a better mousetrap” exists and basically means reinventing the wheel.

To be most effective, use a tiny (like pea sized) lump of peanut butter on the trigger. You want the mouse to reach out as far as possible to get a clean kill. Otherwise you might just severely injure it. Trap goes off and they suffer for like 0.5 seconds. Its way less cruel than being tortured to death by nature’s most adorable murderers

We tried mousetraps, and caught a bunch that way, but I would have to go downstairs first, just to clear out the dead critters.

Then one got slammed on the head, and didn't die, he just wobbled around gotesquely. I wasn't there, he greeted my wife as she came out of the shower. She screamed, threw the towel over it, and quickly dressed and got out of there. She called me at work, and I came home at lunch time, and found the poor creature still under the towel. I took him outside and dispatched him quickly. I was NOT digging the trap strategy.

Soon after, a beautiful stray Tortie showed up, and decided to prove her worth by clearing out ALL the mice. She'd patrol the yard all day, looking for them, and would even beg to go out on the backyard at night to hunt. From the moment she appeared, we never saw another mouse.

Nothing beats an enthusiastic mouser.

do what I did and become a cat. problem solved.

correction: get a cat that actually catches mice AND kills them.

my previous cat liked to bring live, unharmed mice inside, let them go and watch me hunt it.

but then you have to get an alligator to deal with the cat, and you don't even wanna know where it spirals after that

If you don't want to kill it, there are live capture traps and putting some peanut butter in them works very well.

Just take the mouse a mile away and release it.

this still kills the mouse unfortunately 😩 if it's a house mouse, they specifically live in human enviroments.

Alright go find a church graveyard, it might be less likely to be noticed living at the church.

It’s unfortunate that they have downsides (namely shitting and peeing wherever they are) because having a mouse problem is super cute. We had some mice at a house I used to live at and I would see one poke their head out ever once in awhile and I could not be mad, they are adorable

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 3 points 9 hours ago

that's just if they are regular house mice. if its actually a field mouse, those potentially carry hantavirus.

they are so cute and silly though 😔

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Hopefully nothing. I'm sure it can get back out and didn't accidentally fall in the wall cavity.

I had this happen to a bird once in my workshop. The chimney top to the wood stove wasn't properly capped and a bird got stuck in the stove and died. It was one of my favorite species.

Aw. :( I had maybe 5 birds fall down the chimney into a house I was renting over the course of a couple of years. Had no idea they're so clumsy like that.

Little guy might be stuck there.
