We have too many damned US-style “trucks” here in Australia now.
Our fuel prices have just crossed the equivalent of $5 USD/gallon ($1.90 AUD/litre); it will be interesting watching people squirm at the petrol pumps when the price inevitably increases another 50% or so.

This is one of Iran's main goals, IMO. They need to get the US to back down through domestic and diplomatic pressure. This war is already unpopular, but gas prices increasing will affect people who otherwise don't give a shit about the morality of the situation, which is unfortunately quite a lot of US Americans. Hitting the wallet of the MAGA voter is fundamental.

once you've reached end-stage capitalism, where there's no real room for organic growth, all that's left is rent-seeking and smashing windows to "increase liquidity" in the markets (from sane/smart actors who have to hedge, even if they do know it's all a game). the ones who don't see the full picture or are over-leveraged go out of business and act as distressed assets to be bought out by established players.

Higher gas prices might encourage some positive change in folks when it comes to their travel choices. In the short term possibly more choosing to walk/bike (or more realistically choosing to abstain from going somewhere that they otherwise would've driven) and in the longer term it'll encourage more efficient vehicles. Energy has been way too cheap in the US for too long and it really encourages a lot of the waste that we see
I think the observation is that this is a short term market panic and not any true change in the cost of gas.
Yup, it jumped from. $2.90 to $3.50 near me today. I knew this would happen, glad I filled up yesterday.

gas has been incredibly cheap and I think this is one thing that has kept us going over the last year. 8 bucks a gallon would be where it would be to be close to where we were post 9/11.
In what location? In the US, directly after 9/11, has was pegged at .99/gallon because Bush made some kind of deal with oil execs. But they did raise it eventually. Not to 8/gallon though. Unless you're speaking of Europe?

Always try to remind people similar things. Had my first job in highschool during the 2006/7 inflation. Making 8.25/hr when gas was 4.25+ after cash discount.
When it was around $4/gallon recently I told people to just fuck right off, since I was making at least 3x what I was 18/20 years ago. Still a bit ass since "18/20 years ago" makes me a mid-age adult now. Got them bigger bills. At least gas prices have slowed down.
Are you thinking of Katrina? Granted, I wasn't old enough to drive when 9/11 happened, but I don't recall gas prices spiking. But they sure as hell did after Katrina.

It's like 3.90 something at the closest 3 gas stations near me. But they are currently in a bit of a price war so...
It's $6 a gallon in the UK, I think a good chunk of that is tax/duty tho.
Cannot convert precisely right now, but in Germany I'd say gas is currently at 1,90€ per liter. ~~That would place the gallon at 7.00 to 7.50 USD.~~ Did the math, that's 8.35 USD per gallon at current conversion rates.

Until they build data centers near you and/or generation and infrastructure for data centers. All the customers help pay for that. Ours is up 25%.
