Where was the "embarrassment" when they had the world cup in Russia in 2018 and when they had it in Qatar? Ultimately embarrassment ought to result in action but I'm not sure it will here.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 22 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Boycott the World Cup, boycott the Olympics, boycott America.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 6 points 10 hours ago

Sounds good, I'm in

We have canceled all our football tickets and hotel acomedations for the 2026 World Cup.

We request that you do the same,

[–] peetabix@sh.itjust.works 21 points 13 hours ago

Just like when it was the Qatar World Cup, I refuse to watch it or talk about it.

[–] Vizzerdrix@lemmy.world 168 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

FIFA execs can feel embarassment? I don't buy it

[–] MrDrProf@lemmy.ca 12 points 15 hours ago

For the right price I'm sure they can feel shame

[–] dnub@piefed.social 37 points 18 hours ago

My thoughts exactly, the "futbol mafia" embarrassed? No way

[–] amateurcrastinator@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

They had someone build them a hyper realistic simulation of what embarrassing might feel like to a regular person.

[–] FarrellPerks@feddit.uk 105 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

How are they just now getting embarrassed?

They presented a fucking 'peace' prize to a fascistic dictator and convicted rapist. They're a fucking laughing stock right alongside the orange degenerate.

[–] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 1 points 41 minutes ago

Yeah, the article sounds like it was written by the Onion.

Are they concerned that Trump is diminishing the credibility of the award? The one they invented to transparently flatter the things of this exact, specific egomaniacal madman?

Sure Jan.

[–] filister@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago

They can't go any lower than this in their effort to appease a megalomaniac.

If they were so worried about world peace they should have barred the Israeli football clubs from participating in any international tournaments.

No way, Gowron has more honor in his pinky toe than that man has in his entire body.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 9 points 16 hours ago

And Gowron was definitely not an honorable Klingon.

He actually picked up the medal like that, however the face and hair are edited.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 59 points 18 hours ago

Please. FIFA will suck whatever dick it has to.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 33 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (2 children)

These and the Olympics are going to be like the 1936 Olympics, but like a farcical tragicomedy.

[–] prex@aussie.zone 17 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Boycott.
And that's coming from an Australian.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 12 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I'm too poor to afford a ticket. But I can always not even watch the games :D

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 4 points 15 hours ago

Yes that's part of a boycott. Their ratings are absolutely important to them.

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

"First as a tragedy, then as a farce"

[–] BigBrownBeaver@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Ah yess, the famous football player. Shoot five Hattricks in one game.

[–] GreenBeanMachine@lemmy.world 14 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah... That's just one anonymous source feeling some embarrassment.

Fifa, however, doubled down on their decision to award the peace prize to Trump and said it did not comment on “hearsay”. A spokesperson said: “Fifa strongly supports its annual peace prize, an award to recognise exceptional actions for peace and unity.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Annual? Did fifa actually give these out before? I thought this was special just for Trump.

[–] prodigalsorcerer@lemmy.ca 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Yeah, that actually changes things. Not a lot, but very slightly. Like, whatever unit is smaller than a Planck length.

Edit: it's an "annual" prize, but Trump got the first one. I would be surprised if there was another, but maybe he'll win that one too.

[–] webp@mander.xyz 4 points 14 hours ago
[–] Cherry@piefed.social 18 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

FIFA are giving peace prizes? Why? Their sense of importance is astounding. They need to get back to grassroots.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 28 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

It's just bribery. Give Trump something shiny and expensive with "Trump is great" written on it and he'll treat you favorably.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 12 points 17 hours ago

It doesn't last long, though. He already forgot about it after Machado gave him real Nobel peace prize, if not sooner.

They specially made it up just to give Trump.

It was a bribe.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Fifa want trump to change "soccer" to "football" and trump wanted a peace prize.

So FIFA made up a peace prize and gave it to trump.

And for like an afternoon trump rambled about how football should mean the same in America as everywhere else. But his followers didn't latch on to it because no one in maga gives a fuck about soccer.

Fifa gained nothing, and made people hate them even more. I really don't know why Europe doesn't just make their own. FIFA has been corrupt and holding the sport back for decades.

Are you telling me a group of grown men give a s*** about what the United States calls football?

Because Obama got a Nobel peace prize, Trump is obsessed with getting one himself. That's why.

[–] nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Stop giving peace prizes to American heads of state and their cabinets, it has never gone well. Henry Kissinger has a nobel one.

[–] Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 15 hours ago

My first thought when reading the title was that he could also claim the Fifa World Cup Trophy. It was meant to be a joke, but now I am not so sure that it won't happen :-)

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

Are they afraid their fake award is going to lose credibility because they gave it to the person they made it up for and he doesn’t deserve it?

[–] ShellMonkey@piefed.socdojo.com 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Who could have possibly seen bad behaviors coming from him...

Sounds like an org that just follows whatever they perceive as the popular thing. Little donnie has been sinking for a while where even the most fervent base is cheering for him with a half-hearted smile while looking around for support.

It was never not embarrassing.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

They really do look like massive dorks now.

[–] BigTuffAl@lemmy.zip 4 points 17 hours ago

imagine caring at all about rich people and their fake prizes
