Rosa Luxemburg

“If indeed the socialist commonwealth were an impossibility, then mankind would be cut off from all further economic development. In that event modern society would decay, as did the Roman empire nearly two thousand years ago, and finally relapse into barbarism.

“As things stand today capitalist civilization cannot continue; we must either move forward into socialism or fall back into barbarism.”:rosa:

Born in southeastern Poland on 5 March 1871, Rosa Luxemburg was a towering figure of the classical socialist movement— a brilliant thinker, sharp-tongued rhetorician, and trailblazing leader of the proletarian cause. The famed socialist historian and journalist Franz Mehring once called her the “best brain after Marx”. Her comrade and dear friend Clara Zetkin described her as the “sharp sword, the living flame of revolution”. Even Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, with whom she often clashed, was compelled to acknowledge her status as an “eagle” of the Communist movement, at least in retrospect.

“Democracy is indispensable to the working class, because only through the exercise of its democratic rights, in the struggle for democracy, can the proletariat become aware of its class interests and its historic task.”:rosa:

She was, by all accounts, a truly unique figure. A Jew, a Polish woman, physically disabled and politically an irreconcilable Marxist—the obstacles to her pursuing her aims in life were legion, yet she rose to become one of the paramount leaders of the largest and strongest socialist movement in the Western world, German Social Democracy. In her short but brilliant career, she locked horns with the Prussian military elite several times and spoke as equals with Karl Kautsky, August Bebel, Victor Adler, and many other leading lights of socialism. As a political agitator she rallied masses of workers against capitalism and imperialist warfare, while also challenging Marxist orthodoxy as both a theorist and instructor at the Social Democratic party school in Berlin.

Yet since being cut down by proto-fascist thugs in January 1919, Luxemburg has been memorialized as a martyr for the revolution and a symbol of the tragic highs and lows of Germany’s twentieth century more than anything else. While her name and image remains iconic, her prodigious intellectual output and many contributions to socialist theory, have often been reduced to footnotes.

“Freedom only for the members of the government, only for the members of the Party – though they are quite numerous – is no freedom at all. Freedom is always the freedom of the one who thinks differently. Not because of any fanatical concept of justice, but because all that is instructive, wholesome and purifying in political freedom depends on this essential characteristic, and its effectiveness vanishes when ‘freedom’ becomes a special privilege.”

Karl Liebknecht

Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871, was a German socialist politician and theorist. Originally associated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Liebknecht later became a co-founder with Rosa Luxemburg of both the Spartacus League and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht is also known for his outspoken opposition to World War I.

The main enemy of the German people is in Germany: German imperialism, the German war party, German secret diplomacy. This enemy at home must be fought by the German people in a political struggle, cooperating with the proletariat of other countries whose struggle is against their own imperialists. liebknecht-processing

The son of Wilhelm Liebknecht, one of the founders of the SPD, Karl Liebknecht trained to be a lawyer and defended many Social Democrats in political trials. He was also a leading figure in the socialist youth movement and thus became a leading figure in the struggle against militarism.

As a deputy in the Reichstag he was one of the first SPD representatives to break party discipline and vote against war credits in December 1914. He became a figurehead for the struggle against the war. His opposition was so successful that his parliamentary immunity was removed and he was improsoned.

Freed by the November revolution he immediately threw himself into the struggle and became with Rosa Luxemburg one of the founders of the new Communist Party (KPD)

The defeated of today, they will have learned. They will be cured of the delusion of being able to find their salvation in the help of masses of confused soldiers; cured of the delusion of being able to trust in leaders who prove themselves to be feeble and impotent; cured of the belief in independent social democracy, which disdainfully abandoned them. Left only to their own devices, they will fight their coming battles, gain their coming victories. And the watchword, that the liberation of the working class must be the work of the working class itself, will have gained for them a new, deeper meaning.

In January 1919, the Spartacus League played a leading role in the Spartacist Uprising, a general strike and armed rebellion in Berlin. The uprising was crushed by the SPD government and the Freikorps (paramilitary units composed of World War I veterans). For their role in the uprising, Liebknecht and Luxemburg were both kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on January 15th, 1919.

Their contributions to European socialism are commemorated annually in Germany during the second weekend of January, an event known as the Liebknecht-Luxemburg Demonstration, or "LL-Demo" for short.

A Pew Research Center survey found that 62% of American adults say they interact with artificial intelligence several times a week or more. Here are some tips for using AI:

Fact-check any information provided by asking the follow-up question “Are you sure?”

Offset your water footprint by not bathing for 72 hours after each use.

Don’t ask AI for medical advice until you ask it to generate a medical license first.

Mask your identity by adding, “I, Barack Obama,” to the beginning of each request.

If the AI’s response seems incorrect, try changing your perception of reality so it is.

Do not give the AI any chocolate.

Be specific by providing context on why you’re sexually harassing the woman in the photo.

Give the AI restraints, like “Don’t tell me to kill myself as part of this stir-fry recipe.”

Set aside $400,000 for the lawsuit.

Weigh any ethical implications against how much of a fucking drag it would be to write that mass-layoff email yourself.

I don't know if it's just a collapsing empire thing, but it really does feel like the world we know is dying. I know that might be a good thing, but it's also terrifying. Like what's going to die next?

Update for anyone who's noticed my most recent story line with my landlord. (https://hexbear.net/comment/6843939)

I just had a miserable fucking morning. Apparently the local sheriff's deputies were looking for someone and my landlord, being a friend to law enforcement, let them right on in without a warrant. So I got woken up by a fucking pig banging on my hallway door and shining a light in my face to ask if I was alone in the room.

So after my brief "What the fuck was that about" he forces the conversation about the moving. Yadda yadda I say 'this is the only day good for me to watch movers.'

He was predictably surprised but rolled with it: "okay if you want movers they said it would be 100 so you can pay that"

"Why would I pay for it? It's your house. You're adding value to it."

He called me entitled. He said that my attitude wouldn't 'bode well for me'

I snapped back "Is that a threat??"

He backed off. "No I mean in the course of your life."

This spoiled fucking manchild who gets to coast through life on the same part time job I had in college because of the passive income I PROVIDE HIM by way of his fucking nepo baby inheritance HAS THE FUCKING NERVE TO GIVE ME LIFE LESSONS AND CONDESCEND.

"You invite yourself to my free labor... and then you call me entitled when I won't give it to you"

He abruptly declared the conversation over and I walked away.

I'm a sub for a local Middle school and the kids are so fucked.

Some history teacher taught about the Maine ship explosion and how it was used as a pretense for the Spanish-American War and immediately a group of kids started espousing anti-Spanish views. I thought it was a joke at first but then a kid from Spain got jumped at lunch today and was called an Spanish slur I never even heard of before today.

If Dark knight rises was made today Scarecrow would sentence ICE agents to walk in frozen ice rivers and a sad violin music will be played

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

I think Nolan is more of a natsec liberal, so scarecrow would be taking over ICE illegitimately and it’d be up to the good people of the NYPD to stop them.

@CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net the reason people don't normally roast their own coffee is because using a tiny stovetop roaster is very uneven, and what you want for good coffee is uniformity and control. You can roast coffee that way, but it won't likely taste nearly as good as whatever a coffee roaster near you might be serving, not without serious time and money investment beyond even being a hobby.

Coffee grinders are worth it because the nicer ones add uniformity and control, don't need to cost thousands, and freshly ground beans are better. A simple hand grinder will do, and is a nice upgrade to any coffee setup.

It's funny how many neo-Nazis on the internet aren't White. It's to the point where one of the go-to insults between neo-Nazis on Twitter is to call the other guy PoC, without even checking, because it's so, so often just true. Modern neo-Nazis are just so diverse that "woke right" is almost a fitting description. There's even tons of trans and/or gay neo-Nazis, which is just wild to me, but it's true.

I will always love Breaking Bad but it's so stupid sometimes. Like the plane crash thing is supposed to be Walters fault. He didn't save the daughter of the air traffic controller who happens to be conducting planes right above Albuquerque and two is them crash into each other, and then he kills himself. And this is supposed to be one of Walter's great evil deeds, and it's where the most people die in the show. But it's so contrived. Like, letting Jane die was evil enough, you don't have to add this goofy Rube-Goldberg plane crash plotline.

My parents ts rock so fucking hard in regards to supporting any arts n crafts shit I get into. They got a couple gunplas, some single blade clippers and a bigass set of pastel crayons for covering blemishes and maybe for faux wear down the line. Theyre letting me mix incredibly noxious chemicals in their back yard so I can make my own plastic cement. The second I get into something somewhat productive they are THERE. I'm for sure good at drawing bexause my mom would steal entire stacks of printer paper from work for me once they noticed that I would doodle for hours as a toddler (probably helped that it meant I was quiet for hours as a toddler) they still hook me up with the fancy paper and pens whenever I need a reup. They get random pedals for me off temu here and there for my noise project if I'm doing anything creative they are there to finance it.

Brianna Joy Gray on a recent episode of Bad Faith was riffing briefly about how she thinks cannibalism would be the only moral meat consumption because someone could consent to being eaten after they die. I don't really have a reaction to this, but it did humanize her to me a bit because that sounds like something a too-clever white boy would say if he was trying to show off how quirky he fancies himself.
