Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

This view provides an interesting detail. He walks around the car with the phone, documenting the plates and the bumper stickers, and then before he walks in front of it a second time (for what reason?) he switches the hand with which he is holding the phone to free up his right hand. In a video from another angle, you can see he starts reaching for his gun when she's still in reverse, or at least before she accelerates. So to me, it seems like he's performing the behavior that was mentioned in a 2013 paper on CBP use of force. In that report, they mentioned agents were standing in front of cars about to flee, and then shooting the drivers in frustration and then claiming self-defense. Here, Ross positions himself in front of a fleeing person (but just barely, so he can still step out of the way) and uses them hitting the gas as an excuse to use deadly force. The fact he says "fucking bitch" afterward and also flees the scene suggests he killed her with malice and knew it was unjustified.

Here is an article about the use of force paper from 2014 https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/us-border-agents-intentionally-stepped-front-moving-vehicles-justify-shooting-them/

This is one million percent what the ice pigs were doing. They were barking contradictory orders at her, one guy reaching into her car, one guy yelling at her to leave, and then this guy with his hand inching towards his weapon and standing around in a precarious spot to instigate a self defense claim. I hate these people so much and hell is too good for them.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 31 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

But is a civil rights lawyer sharp enough to lay this out in court?

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 34 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Doesn't matter at this point

They are, yeah. There's plenty of great lawyers. Just doesn't matter now lol, shits too far gone

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I don't think it takes being very sharp to observe that to the extent that danger to the pig was remotely real, he deliberately put himself in danger to justify the shooting, and that means it obviously does not count as self defense (and I think there is legal precedent for that). It truth is obvious, it's just a matter of a chud judge or jury going "Yah, based" anyway.

Edit: Also, two shots were in the side window, right? What's the claim there? That she was going to hit him with the car door? That she was going to circle around and try to hit him "again"? It's all nonsense.

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

multiple brown shirts barking orders at her and this guy circles around behind her car to get in front of it illegal-to-say

[–] TwodogsFighting 3 points 3 weeks ago

Just like the simon says killer, Philip Brailsford.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 91 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

If this guy ever gets prosecuted, switching his phone to the other hand so he can draw his weapon before the vehicle starts moving ought to be grounds for premeditation.

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 61 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

It absolutely is. This fucker has been jacking it to the thought of killing someone like this for years I'm sure. He saw his chance and he took it.

The Hague would be far too lenient for these assholes. The things they actually deserve can't be said on a public forum.

[–] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 39 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Yep. When Big Boy Kyle got away with murder, it signalled open season on protestors. They are begging for a chance to commit 'justified' homicide, like they did in Iraq or Call of Duty

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've seen tweets going around of a guy saying that he's talked to lawyers who specialize in defending pigs who shoot civilians saying that it really doesn't look good for this guy

Like maybe they could justify and get him off on the first shot probably not on the second third and fourth

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

There were a couple "law enforcement experts" on MSM today and they aren't exactly toeing the trump line which says a lot

[–] videogame@hexbear.net 78 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Jonathan Ross? You mean Jonathan Edward Ross, Age 43 of 1120 Francesca Ct, Chaska, MN 55318, phone number (309) 382-0511? That Jonathan Ross?

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 37 points 3 weeks ago

This pile of filth has the yellow "Don't Tread on Me" waving above his door.

Beyond parody.

May he rot in eternal hell, but only after spending the rest of his life in complete misery.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 75 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

real It Could Happen Here vibes from the comments on Grim's twitter.

Wild how some people apparently literally see her intentionally trying to run the agent over, they fully believe she was trying to hit him. It's really unsettling.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 62 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

apparently literally see her

We aren't at the stage of fascism where they can sit back and openly say something like "the fuckin' b*tch deserved it." Right now - they still have to pretend they have a soul. So they grab at any information - no matter how nonsensical - that federal agents need to kill to protect themselves. I think many rightwingers don't actually believe it but it's an in-group lie that's necessary now.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 46 points 4 weeks ago

They're building a fucking skyscraper of lies. I don't think there is going to be a full commeupance for it, but it's going to start working against them

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 37 points 4 weeks ago

They are over the moon with nazi glee, the only reason they bother pretending is duper’s delight from nazi-enabling “journalists” breathlessly parroting their sea of bullshit

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 53 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

This perspective just serves to push that narrative, being filmed from his point of view on a narrow phone camera. It looks like the car almost hit him because his arms are already over the fucken hood. They conveniently dont mention he somehow had time to draw his weapon, aim it, and fire in those few seconds the camera jumbles around. If you can do that without moving much then you were never close enough to get run over. Since as we saw killing her just made her car accelerate uncontrollably. Which would have run him over anyway had she been trying to.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 29 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

Yeah. I haven't seen any other angles of this shooting so I didn't have many preconceptions (eg I assumed he already had his gun out) about what I was watching. Charitably I might believe she clipped him by accident, but I can't wrap my head around interpreting even that as intentional. Not in good faith at least. I wonder if any of them are even posting in good faith.

I think watching that shit's gonna have me feeling bleak all day. Fucking pig.

[–] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 31 points 4 weeks ago

Here is a BlueSky with two videos of different angles. CW: State Execution

You can clearly see the :cop: was in no danger.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 27 points 4 weeks ago

They are constantly fantasizing every single second of every single minute of every single hour of every single day about the day they’ll finally get to legally murder somebody, so when they see fellow scum living their dream they become their most zealous online defense attorneys

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 26 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

If you watched this one, it's a rare case where id suggest watching one of the other angles. This one will directly skew or perception of the incident (which is why it was released by the right wing).

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

2nd angle is the clearest he could have easily stepped back. Car wasn't even moving. This is awful. Evil. It won't stop. I feel sick

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 24 points 4 weeks ago

They are trained to escalate and put themselves in a plausibly deniable situation to justify premeditated murder.

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 62 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

i'm amazed that he seems to have leaked this to exonerate himself, and even more amazed that conservatives are going along with it

i take that back, none of this shit even raises an eyebrow anymore.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

the further depraved it gets the bigger the lies the ones that are bought it are going to willfully believe. I think it's probably on the boarder of where they can back out and not damn their humanity, but I don't see a lot of backing out.

Once it's too far in they literally won't be able to back out without facing a contradiction that would cause them to kill themselves

The regime is going to try to sell a false reality to the conservatives as long as possible because of this. The alternate facts or whatever they called it, which got into the main stream during Trump 1 as a concept makes more sense from that perspective

[–] tane@lemy.lol 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think the “too far” line has long passed, they live in a different reality and there is only one sure way to deal with them, as I no longer think reeducation would work on them.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's possible

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 57 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Trump was just on tv complaining that the woman in the video is yelling shame calling her annoying. A woman just got shot in the face by one of your private mercenaries and that's what your stupid ass cares about, a woman being annoying. Fuck you dude.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

As has appeared a bit on this site, a lot of the reactionary response to the murder has been extremely banal misogyny and other petty social grievances that I think some of these people don't understand does not merit taking someone's life over even if we imagined they were true. It's an extremely alienated response, that the person on the screen isn't a real person but just kind of an idea if not a stand-in for people in your own life that you resent, so literally killing them is therefore good.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 50 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Never forget: their whole ideology is that they were born hating you for no reason and they will do the most horrible things to you because to them it’s funny.

They’re a bunch of overgrown bored kids stepping on ants for the fun of it. Misery builds character and these brats have never suffered in their lives.

Alpha News

I hate it here

Yeah I know that’s like the least important part of this whole tragedy, but I couldn’t help but point it out.

[–] dead@hexbear.net 39 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I went to their website and it's a right wing local news station in Minnesota. Their homepage is plastered with allegations that social programs are fraudulent and "crime watch" stories. Their youtube channel is full of right wing conspiracy theories about Somali people, going back at least 6 years. They have produced multiple feature-length documentaries claiming that cops are in danger in society.

[–] RoabeArt@hexbear.net 33 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (2 children)

cops are in danger in society

Imagine thinking this is true lmao.

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 23 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Pizza delivery and waste collection are objectively more dangerous

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago
[–] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 16 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah it’s one of those websites that I sorta knew existed but didn’t know much about other than that it was fucking horrible. I just saw the post title

right wing media

Then the watermark on the video

Remember: you don’t hate normies enough. You don’t hate Chad Thundercock enough.

Why are the most stupid, insufferable douchebags always the most well-liked?

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

Regular reminder that at bare minimum the plurality opinion is opposed to the shooting and things like it, and these scumbags are thereby not "the most well-liked."

Incidentally, for your own sake I'd suggest being careful about how you come across talking about hating "normies" and complaining about the popularity of "Chad," because it forms a bit of a pigeonhole.

[–] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Because all the folks who like them fundamentally agree with their worldview
