Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

I hate nuts. I'm not allergic to them.

Everything about them is wrong, I've never had food that contained nuts that wouldn't have been significantly better without them.

Chocolate with nuts - What was wrong with just the former

Nuts on their own - Might as well eat wood

Nutbars - gross.

Food with nuts is just bad, and the sooner we move on from this dated cultural institution the better.

Biblically accurate tanuki

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That is one hell of an image

One of the elders becomes senile and starts a Buddhist dancing cult among the tanuki who are unable to transform, eventually sailing away with them in a ship that takes them to their deaths.

Yeah, it sounds like an interesting one. Kind of fern gully-ish.

Upvote but hard disagree. Nuts are amazing. Plant one walnut tree get 1000s of walnuts every year that have a naturally long shelf life. They have lots of very healthy fats etc

Similar for other nuts.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 39 points 4 weeks ago

Nutritious food that grows for free on trees? What could be better?

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 31 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Peanut Butter and Nutella

Your honor I rest my case.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

OP replaces with Butter and ella. Seems doable.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Peanuts aren't nuts tho

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 18 points 4 weeks ago

But...baklava...

[–] HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world 16 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

'Might as well eat wood.'

I wish wood tasted that good.

Pistachios out here looking to fight you over this.

Some of the postings in this Community are starting to get absurd. I'm going to make one that says I love murder and I hate babies next.

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Hating babies is pretty common

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

I'm happy they exist I just don't think they're cute and don't ask me to hold one.

Yes, you guys have created some truly unpopular posts

[–] Egonallanon@feddit.uk 7 points 4 weeks ago

Well its certainly an unpopular opinion I'll give you that. Nuts are fantastic in both flavour and nutritional value.

[–] Crankenstein@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Upvoted cause I heavily disagree with this. Cashews and almonds are the best snack ever. Almond Joys are the best chocolate candy bar.

Nutella, nuff said.

To compare them to eating wood is absurd. Your taste palate must be ruined.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 4 points 4 weeks ago

Chocolate peanuts are heavenly, and a good peanut brittle is class. Fuck you, with your shite opinion.

[–] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

But what about honey roasted nuts? So good 😋

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 2 points 4 weeks ago

Or spiced nuts

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (7 children)

Upvoted because I'm jealous. I can't have nuts in the house because twin is allergic to tree nuts and I love her just enough to remove all them from the house so I can't cross contaminant anything accidentally. Would be easier if I hated them but boy I miss walnuts.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Interesting that only one of you has allergies. When did you realize?

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

I was the healthier baby and now the 'healthier' adult. Er, my immune system was better at least. I an not healthy lol.

Twin always reacted much stronger to the cats than I did so they got a full workup as a kid. The tree nuts started at pine nuts but expanded over the years.

Nuts on their own - Might as well eat wood

Depends how old they are and/or how they were shipped. My local bulk store recently switched almond suppliers and the new ones are soooooo much better (from California to Spain). It's like night and day... before it was like eating gravel, but it was fine because that was just what gravel tasted like... but the revelation that almonds can actually taste like almonds is, well... I can never go back. Walnuts are not wood, fresh walnuts are bomb. Pecans are AMAZING with raisins. Almonds are total shit unless you can find the good ones from the good Spanish supplier.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That’s a good point. I’ve noticed that almonds in particular loose their freshness, their flavor, quickly

[–] rapchee@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

i've only had european almonds (afaik), but my experience was the older they were, the stronger their flavour was, the more they dry out, the stronger it gets

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 weeks ago

I just remembered, the ones from cali were steamed or something, which turned them into gravel.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Pesto sauce is pretty great.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 3 points 4 weeks ago

Nuts are a vehicle for salt.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Love them. I don't find them woody tasting. My daughter's girlfriend is allergic to nuts so I don't cook with them much now (they are living here) and I miss them.

I don't usually just want a handful but they make food better not worse.

Walnuts or pecans, such a pleasant texture in cinnamon rolls or banana bread, cookies.

Almonds are delicious with green beans.

Cashew butter makes better cream of mushroom soup than cream does, and I say this as a lover of cream, milk, cheese.

They are high in calories and nutrition for something that grows on a tree, too.

[–] rapchee@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

hard disagree, i need the cruch

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yep, they kinda taste woody. What's wrong with eating wood tho? Trust me, if I could actually draw nutrition from wood, I would xD

But also, nuts have hella different texture. Only nut I hate is pistachio as of now, didn't taste them all after all.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 4 weeks ago

Same I got that beaver in me 😶

[–] axx@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Counterpoint: pistachios. Just the shell without the pistachio nut would be a lot less interesting.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 3 points 4 weeks ago

Nuts are awesome but I probably wouldn't feel that way if they would kill me after I ate them.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 2 points 4 weeks ago

I hate nuts in & on food. But I love eating nuts by themselves. I am very picky about the type of nuts I like. Nuts are actually super good for you.

[–] blady_blah@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

So I tried to think of the top three things that I really enjoy with nuts in them:

  1. Ice cream with hardening chocolate sauce and crushed peanuts sprinkled on top (sooo good)
  2. Almond Roca (toffee plus chocolate plus nuts)
  3. Whitefish with almonds on top. (I know I'm not describing this very well, but I've had several fish with nuts on top that have been truly outstanding.)
[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 weeks ago

Have you considered the humble Filbert?

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 weeks ago

What about marzipan?
