Can only speak for myself. I use AI tools almost daily to help me pursue my hobby. I find it very useful for that. But when I enjoy art produced by a human, on some level I want to connect with the human experience that produced it. Call it parasocial if that helps. But I'm always at least a little interested in the content creators, not just the content.

I know some people consume content like a commodity or product. I'm not judging those people at all. But I'm generally not like that myself. I want to know the story behind the creation.

Go for it. I was very reluctant to try DIY haircuts. But once I did....I immediately wondered why I paid for it with time, money, and hassles for all those years.

Yup. Have had a few coworkers exactly like that. Have tried to deal with them in various ways, but it's always tricky. Especially if they are the "popular person" in the office.

Another variant is the jackass who walks in and sees others working on something, acts angry that they are "doing it all wrong" then huffs out without actually pitching in. Had a coworker who consistently did this BS to try to cover his own inadequacies and tardiness. Was so happy when the boss fired that fucker.

The Great Book of Amber has been giving me side eye for at least 15 years. I know it's more than one book, but it's definitely my mental ball and chain.

Correlation is not causation. People who take melatonin could have trouble sleeping because of sleep apnea and myriad other (possibly undiagnosed) sleep issues which can also cause heart problems over time.

It's not clear from this snippet if they controlled for that sort of thing: "A secondary analysis found that those who took melatonin for over a year were almost 3.5 times as likely to be hospitalized for heart failure when compared to those not taking melatonin."

I don't take melatonin. And I'm not saying it's definitely not the melatonin causing the increased risk. Always read articles about medical studies with a large dose of skepticism.

Individual level:

Societal level: I have no idea, but I imagine media (movies, tv shows, the news, Tik Tok, etc) all have some influence there. Mostly in bad ways, unfortunately.

Destruction of property is a gray area. Obviously it can go too far, like setting a house on fire or destroying the east wing of the white house. But I was fine with them getting rid of the stupid Confederate statues. There are some options there.

Assassinations can be a bit murky, too. I'm fine with Luigi being a folk hero for people. Assassinations are extremely risky and of questionable effectiveness....but that one felt like borderline self defense. That sort of thing can escalate quickly but 47 is escalating either way.

We need to exhaust nonviolent resistance first, we're not even close to doing that. And what we've done so far (No Kings, recent blue wave, other protests, boycotts) is kind of starting to work.

Everyone on the internet acts like some kind of freedom fighter badass but anyone with common sense knows 1. most of those people are full of shit and roleplaying online and 2. a violent overthrow ends up with people in charge who are willing to use violence to get what they want. Historically that sort of thing has not gone well.

Nonviolence works, it takes persistence and patience, and is always preferable to another civil war.

Only these psychopathic dipshits would think shooting an unarmed person makes you some kind of badass.

NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner.) Free versions for Linux, Windows, and Mac are available for download. Simple interface but fully featured, NAPS2 is much better than the overly bloated proprietary software that comes with most document scanners. Compatible with many devices.

If you plug a USB drive into Microsoft Windows, in many cases it will try to do things "for you" with the drive. Not a great idea. There could be malware lurking on that USB drive.

There are a couple of things you can do to help mitigate the issue. These tips assume Windows 11.

Turn off Autoplay

  • Open Settings. Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
  • Go to Bluetooth & devices. In the left sidebar, click on "Bluetooth & devices."
  • Select Autoplay. Scroll down and click on "Autoplay."
  • Turn Off Autoplay. You'll see a toggle switch labeled "Use Autoplay for all media and devices." Turn this off.

This will turn it off completely. You can, if you want, make individual settings for different types of devices.

Deny Execute Access (Pro or Enterprise versions of Windows 11)

  • Open Group Policy Editor. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to the Removable Storage Access Policies. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access.
  • Modify Policies. You can enable the policy "Removable Disks: Deny execute access" to prevent execution from removable drives.
  • Apply and Reboot.

Note, there are some cases where you may want to execute scripts or programs from a removable drive. If that's the case, you may not want to do this, or make a note of it so you can re-enable if needed.

This is not an anti-Kindle rant. I have purchased (rented?) several Kindle titles myself.

However, YSK that you are only licensing access to the book from Amazon, you don't own it like a physical book.

There have been cases where Amazon deletes a title from all devices. (Ironically, one version of "1984" was one such title).

https://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technology/companies/18amazon.html

There have also been cases where a customer violated Amazon's terms of service and lost access to all of their Kindle e-books. Amazon has all the power in this relationship. They can and do change the rules on us lowly peasants from time to time.

Here are the terms of use:

Note, there are indeed ways to download your books and import them into something like Calibre (and remove the DRM from the books). If you do some web searches (and/or search YouTube) you can probably figure it out.

I feel like an idiot for not knowing about these.

Every 2-3 months I have to snake out our shower drain with a 25' snake. Giant PITA.

After some web searches, I stumbled across these hair trap devices. They come in both external and internal configurations. Many different types to choose from.

I purchased an internal one, installed it, and am going to give it a try. In theory I can just pop it out and clean it instead of snaking the pipes. Folks tell me they work well. If this one doesn't work I'll try another type. They are fairly inexpensive.
